We only spent one night here. We had the apartment. It is a private unit with a separate bedroom with en suite bathroom with shower. There is a kitchen/sitting area with two chairs and a TV. The kitchen has a kettle, oven, stove top, microwave and refrigerator. We are not 20 somethings backpacking around New Zealand, so we opted for the private unit as opposed to the bunk bed rooms.

It was very clean. We had the windows open so there was noise and light from the street. No big deal. Not even enough to use our ear plugs.

Gary picked us up from the ferry terminal, checked us in and helped us to our room. He provided a map and lay of the land as to where things were. Piction is small, so this was a quick description. As we were getting ready to walk into town, one of the staff was going that way, so we hitched a ride with him. For us, it was an easy 15 minute walk back to the room.

While we didn't use it, there is a common area with some exercise equipment, pool table, ping-pong and a hot tub spa as well as some very comfortable recliner chairs. There are also a couple sitting rooms with comfy looking furniture, TV and even a piano. There is a washing machine for laundry and a solar (clothes line) dryer.

In the morning, there were freshly baked scones with butter and jam as well as coffee and tea. Nice touch.

Gary and Nikki were great hosts. I wish we had a couple of more nights to stay. Picton is a cute little town with lots of charm. If we come this way again, we will definately stay here again.

We stayed in the very cute vintage style caravan tucked away in a personal little corner. Super cozy and comfy. Beautiful views, not to mention the grape vine that decorated all the walkways. Breakfast was the most delicious, big, fluffy scones, with a selection of jams and coffee and tea. Wish I was able to stay longer to drink those views and use some of the well taken care of facilities. And to top it all off the host was very friendly and accommodating. Will definitely make this place my regular stop on my annual trip through Picton.

First stop on a grand tour of the South Island. So convenient as we'd just rolled off the Bluebridge. Gary & Nikki's place has a great, welcoming vibe. Really helpful staff, loads of space. We loved the style, the coffin lid door but not too over-done
Nice, simple breakfast for all. Freshly baked cheese scones, pretty fine ones too
Add a really friendly cat (& a not quite so friendly one) all equals a fabulous place to stay.
Our room was everything you needed & nothing you didn't, even had a great view over the ferry terminal

Our family of four (2 kids aged 8 and 12) stayed in an apartment - we had two foldout beds for the kids - which worked fine and they slept well. The apartment had everything we needed, plus we all enjoyed the spa pool, table tennis and two very friendly cats that live at the backpackers. It was a pleasant walk to cafes for dinner from here, and we were very happy with our stay here.

My friend and I booked a twin room for a night to round off our ten day South Island trip before the ferry back to Wellington. This backpackers is more like a hotel, amazing room, pool table, table tennis, hot tub, darts, games, kitchen. We never left all day! Gary is an amazing host and let us borrow bikes for free to go to the supermarket. Would 100% recommend this place especially on a sunny day in the garden.

On our travels to the south island last week we were hit by torrential rain and the main SH1 highway was closed when we disembarked from the Wellington to Picton ferry. Most of the ferry passengers were looking for accommodation in the quaint little (saturated) town of Picton. My son and partner chose Tombstone Backpackers. Luckily! it was a haven in our storm. Gary and Nikki were the ultimate hosts. Plus .... travelling with a teen - imagine our delight in finding not only a hot tub (on a wintery blustery day) but a pool table, dart board and ping-pong table to boot. Homemade scones and jam, with an impeccably tidy kitchen and facilities. Our family room was cosy, with our own bathroom, fresh new linen and towels. Absolute winner. Oh .... and view out over the harbour. Many thanks and great work Gary & Nikki. We so appreciated you.

Thanks to the staff. Everyone was nice, but I would not stay again.
Liked · Nice friendly staff. Warm room.
Disliked · Cold areas with doors open. Noisy rooms. The common areas smelled like a teenage boys room!! Small sink and not a real ensuite bathroom with closed shower and toilet in the entry so seemed pricey for what it was. View looks out to ferry and petrol station. Lots of cooking smells from the kitchen users. Seems a little bit out of the town.

The best spot to stay in Picton- we have stayed here several times, great view of the harbour, after a big day travelling you can sit in the spa pool which has a view of the bay. Kitchen facilities are good, the owners provide home made scones cereal and toast for breakfast. An altogether amazing facility, wouldn’t want to stay anywhere else, for comfort and value

The configuration of the room was odd. When you opened the door you entered the toilet and shower then the bedroom which had the basin in one corner. The bed was a bit firm for me. It was very clean, I would have liked a place to put your stuff. There were some hooks on the wall.
Scones were provided for breakfast.
The place was very clean , the lady who runs it was often in the kitchen cleaning. I found it a bit hard to relax. Also there was a time limit on breakfast and using the kitchen at night.

We stayed here twice, on our way down south and then again heading back up north. We were in a ensuite room which was compact but big enough. Nice to have the balcony too. Great welcome by Gary and the cats & lovely breakfast in the morning. Kitchen had nice big fridges big enough to store our chilly bags. Smooch was hanging outside our room, so came in for a rest and then departed via the balcony. Love a cat so happy to oblige. On our way north our ferry was early in the morning so it was very convenient.
