Escape to Picton is a boutique hotel & restaurant in Picton, New Zealand. The hotel is enviably sited by the town’s waterfront, overlooking the marina. Within a stone’s throw are regular boating tours of the Marlborough Sounds, and connections to the famous Queen Charlotte walking track. A mere 20-minute drive separates us from the seemingly endless vineyards of the Wairau and Awatere valleys, and the remarkable wineries dotted among them. Much thought and effort has gone into creating accommodation befitting the astonishingly beautiful surrounds. Our three suites are as different from each other as they are equally comely, each suite featuring unique pieces of exquisite handmade furniture collected over many years. We consider that one’s living environment not only reflects, but also determines one’s state of mind. Taking this as our mantra, we’ve done everything in our power to make our three suites genuine havens for our guests.

We just loved it here! it was without question the best accomodation we had whilst in NZ. We were offed a complementary glass of wine nibbles on arrival. The room was so tastefully decorated and massive joined by a very generous bathroom with freestanding bathtub & shower. Our host could not do enough to assist us (she is also the chef😋Our bed was turned down, the breakfast was absolutely delicious & generous we just loved it! Shared balcony off our room overlooking the marina & right in the heart of town. We would definitely come again!!! The only thing that was missing was a fridge(which of course would not fit in with the style of the room).

We visited the hotel and found it very tastefully decorated with a subtile touch of combined modern and vintage elegance.
We had dinner at the restaurant and could not fault it. The atmosphere was discret, the service impeccable and friendly, the music relaxing, the menu rich of interesting choices, the plates artistically decorated and rich in colour, the local fresh seafood we choose was delicious and could have been the almost perfect combination if served with an oaky wine such as a 2023 "Rimapere" Baron de Rothschild Sauvignon blanc (Sadly not on their wine list).. The Pavlova presented in a tall glass was just a sin!

We booked the Formal Room which was beautiful, roomy, it is 8 minutes from the harbour walking with 2 big suitcases so the location was perfect for us. One highlight of our two nights at this establishment was Elizabeth who should have an award for Employee of the Year! talk about helpful! She was the superstar for us, nothing was too much hassle and I sincerely hope her employers appreciate her, what a gem! The breakfast was lovely, very tasty and plentiful and again, Elizabeth was a great host.

Well worth a stay, so bright, clean and the spa bath is in a whole other level. This place doesn’t have a lift however there is one apartment downstairs. Our room was up a few stairs. The configuration of the room has been designed with the traveller in mind. Upon a rival there a few mini tea cakes, as well as two bottles of sparkling water in the fridge, these sorts of touches keep you returning. A gorgeous comfortable warm dressing gowns, another thoughtful touch. The bedroom is separated from the front room by a wall, see this design a lot overseas. It was quite so peaceful, and still in the CBD so in walking distance to cafes, shops excursions. There is also a wee restaurant downstairs, we didn’t get a chance to try it but there is always next time. Highly recommend X10

Escape to Picton is a luxury hotel somewhat oddly located in the little town of Picton. We stayed in the Formal Suite and what you might want to know is that there is no fridge or A/C. We needed to leave the windows open for cool air and it was somewhat noisy for a bit. The other thing is that to eat in the restaurant, which has a really intriguing menu, you need to give 24 hours' notice so they can prepare all meals to order. We didn't know this and were unable to eat there. On the positive side the suite was very roomy and comfortable and the staff (which seemed to consist of one extremely energetic person) was first-rate.

This is the total package - Boutique Hotel✔️ Escape to Marlborough Hop On Hop Off✔️ Escape to Picton Restaurant ✔️ Our four nights staying in this beautiful boutique hotel was so much more than we ever anticipated. Our suite was superb, tastefully furnished, spotlessly clean, great views, sensational staff and very focused on your comfort and enjoyment. The location was exceptional with a pickup service provided for arrivals from the Interislander ferry. Our every need was provided and our favourite ‘Lady of the House’ Elizabeth was almost too good to be true. It was very apparent that the owners Juliearna and Warren valued their staff and treated them like family. We will return ‼️‼️

We booked Escape to Picton for one night prior to our guided Queen Charlotte Track tour. In retrospect, I really should have read more reviews. The hotel is truly lovely, in great maintenance, and unlike other reviewers we did not experience rude staff. We stayed in the Sea room and I agree with another reviewer that it does feel as though you’re in a fish bowl being so close to the busy sidewalk. I would request another room.
The bed was very comfortable and the bathroom was clean with a beautiful tub. Unfortunately, we had no interest in a bath in the morning before our trek — so we had a very very awkward and messy “shower” with the shower head attached to the bath. Be sure you’re OK with only taking baths if you stay here.
There was certainly noise from either staff or other tenants from above us, particularly in the morning and in the early hours. It wasn’t too troubling but if you’re sensitive to upstairs noise, you may want to stay in a different room. We did not notice any restaurant noise as others have mentioned.
Truly, this is more of a bed and breakfast experience and will appeal to those seeking out that type of stay. I probably also think the rates are a bit over the top compared to the rest of the market in Picton. I’m not sure it warrants the rack rate, after staying in another hotel and also an AirBNB on our last night for 1/3 the price with a similar location and level of comfort.
Finally, I might suggest to the owners that they provide a menu or guidance of some kind about the breakfast. We were asked what we wanted but had no frame of reference for what was available. After an awkward back and forth with the staff (well what are the options; whatever you would like; ummm eggs?) we asked for an omelette. That said, the omelette was outstanding. So, I might just suggest they provide a slip of paper of some sampling of offerings to smooth that interaction out for the guests.
This was a lovely hotel but perhaps not well suited to our specific purposes in our stay.

Lots to like. Wonderfully helpful staff, great location and plenty of charm if you like older boutique hotels with character. We stayed in the Modern Suite for three nights , Two nights before and one after walking the Queen Charlotte Track. The staff happily looked after our luggage while on the walk and had it waiting for us in our room on return.
The Modern Suite is certainly spacious and comfortable. However, its worth noting that the living room is located above the restaurant, so you can't escape the restaurant soundtrack while service is on; nor the chatter from the courtyard of the Irish Pub next door. Not excessive but it did go on to the early hours of one morning. The other rooms are likely to be more peaceful
And while I recognise that Escape to Picton doesn't set out to be a"5 star" hotel (although the rates are not that far off!), couldn't fathom out why there was no small fridge in the suite (so milk didn't need to rest in a bowl of ice). And a safe, a full length mirror and more than four spare coat hangers would have been very welcome.

An absolutely beautiful , cosy and luxurious hotel in the middle of Picton. My wife and i spent two nights in the modern suite and were just so impressed with everything. From our giant bed covered in lovely plush bedding and soft pillows to our bathroom with it's double jacuzzi, walk in shower and delightful lavender shampoos and bubblebath. High quality furniture in keeping with our rooms theme, TV with movies and sport in both rooms plus a shared balcony area with a great view. On arrival we were greeted warmly and instantly felt at home, the standard of service is amazing and thoughtful. We have stayed in some fine hotels all over NZ and Europe and both agree Escape to Picton has made it into our top 3 hotel experiences to date. Keep up the amazing work we can't wait to return.

We were looking forward checking in this boutique hotel as the hotel and the rooms look nice on their website but we went from one disappointment to another. First of all, the room had a bad smell when we entered and look very old and untidy. We were supposed to have a view and it was not anything special. There was no fridge and no air con despite selling it as 5 stars. The service was average despite helpful staffs. The chef was terrible as he didn't allow us to share dishes and we had to negotiate as we did not want to eat too much on the evening and being hotel client we expected to be well served. look at the pic of the key chain given for the room key and you understand that it is just unacceptable to sell a hotel room at that price for such a bad overall service. We had holes in our sheets (see pic as well). We do not recommend this hotel at all. Much better and cheaper places around.

Response from escapetopicton, Owner at Escape to Picton Boutique Hotel

Hello, Thank you for your review, I would like to clear up a few points you have made, We are not the Ritz in London. We are in a boutique hotel with 3 luxury suites, in a small seaside village in the south island of New Zealand. A quaint small boutique hotel, we ran around for you 24/7, as you expected, and we did our best. 1/ You tried to check in at 10am (laughable as clients check out at 11am.) We have to clean the suites, so the lovely staff rushed around, gave you the wi-fi code so you could relax as they went into hyper drive trying to do your every command. 2/ Due to this they forgot to ask the last clients for their key so had to make up another one, we are sorry about that. 3/ The hole in the sheet is laughable, as you have blown up the photo, hence the grainy shot to make that as big as you can. It is not larger than a tiny hole. (There was one small hole) If this had been mentioned, we would've replaced it immediately. This has been replaced, and I'm sure the girls would have seen it when resetting the room but again were rushing to get you checked in, as we only have 3 suites. They were looking after the clients checking out. For anyone reading this we have a very small team, so 2 girls in the morning are on. 4/ The CHEF IS A SHE not a he. I own it. We have had many complaints from customers of people cutting up the meals at the table. Who does this? We are not a tapas restaurant. The tables are very close together. To take a lamb rack and cut this up is very awkward at a small table. 5/ You ordered mussels and our lamb dish. We only asked if we could serve this at the same time . We served you the way you wished. I decided not to put anyone next to you. Service was average but helpful which is it? The staff ran up and down the stairs at least 20 times for you. There is no bad smell, its an old bank. There is a wonderful view from the balcony over the marina. You using the key chain as a basis for your whole review says it all. You run down the suite but you have put no pictures of this up, WHY? Its beautiful the Formal suite. It is really sad for my staff, as they did their best for a situation you caused. To even go to a hotel at 10 am, a 200 room hotel even, is an arrogance we do not see often here and I am glad we don't as I have wonderful sweet staff, most can read this from the other reviews. Kind Regards Juliearna (Chef)
