Excellent little motel in Main Street walking distance to supermarket cafes restaurants and pubs. Ver pleasant, cheerful and helpful lady at reception. Rooms very clean, smallish but modern. Has xtra things like touch lights by bedside ( very handy in middle of night) Hangers in the bathroom to put your clothes on while showering. Electric blankets for cold winter night. Have booked this motel for our next trip.

The couple managing the motel were so lovely and kind. The motel was a great base for our week long family holiday around Marlborough, we were in the 2 bedroom unit which was set up well for our family with its own private fenced courtyard being a huge plus. A portacot and highchair was supplied for our youngest. Warm heaters in each room (which were used on a couple wet and cold days) the kitchen had everything we needed for cooking meals (there was also a BBQ in the courtyard we could have used). The children were also given some Easter treats on arrival. Parking is a little bit tight when busy but easy enough to reverse out as there's a large area on the side of the road to turn around. We loved our stay and will likely be back again 🙂

We stayed here two nights, first evening straight off the ferry. We think we had the smallest room they have, but it was still plenty spacious enough, and vey tidy and appeared to be recently renovated. Picton is tiny, so the location is perfect, 6 plus restaurants within 3 minutes walking, and 3 minutes to the wharf where the boats for the Sounds leave from (and apparently 5 minutes walk to the ferry departure spots.) Therefore, value for money (as this was very reasonably priced) we couldn't recommend this place enough. Would stay here again without hesitation.

Stayed at here for two nights as we were taking the ferry across to Wellington. The motel is positioned in the middle of the main street so it is walking distance to cafes, restaurant, supermarket (next door) and the ferrys. The motel is dated and the rooms on the small side. We had a two bedroom one but if you had four people staying it would have been so cramped. We had no hanging space at all in the main bedroom so had to use the second bedroom to unpack our cases and hang clothes. Also no air conditioning only pedestal fans which are not great to use in an already small bedroom. The kitchenette seemed to have all the basic requirements. The bathroom was interesting with a light positioned straight over the shower – not sure how that was allowed! Also had some very odd positioning of power points. There is parking onsite but it is very tight and can be noisy when people are either coming in late or leaving early.

The High Street Living Motel is located halfway down Picton's high street in a brilliant location close to all the shops and waterfront. The car parking is free - but a bit tight! We received a warm welcome from the owner and found our room (Number 3) right away with a small outside table and chairs. The room however was rather small. We struggled to find space for our two suitcases and although the room had a good bathroom and shower the bedroom itself was small. There was a fridge, a microwave, a flat screen TV, no hangind space and a cupboard for crockery and cutlery. But although there were two chairs for sitting and a small coffee table there was nowhere to sit at a laptop and edit pictures, as I like to do. We paid £65 for one night - so it wasn't too expensive but I would not have wanted to stay more than one night here because it was a bit cramped.

I hardly write negative reviews but there it goes. What sometimes seems nice - can be very different once you get to experience it. Long story short; stayed at the High Street Living Motel for x4nights. The owner, sounded nice when I first rock up while staying elsewhere in Picton. Needed more place with the kitchen and shopped around few “motel” business to see what’s and where. I am extremely low maintenance and very clean person and could stay in most expensive hotels 🏨 however I find this waste of money as I only need the shower/ bed/ wifi as am travelling for work and kitchen , so I can cook in the evening if i feeling so. On the second day the owner asked me Not to burn candles as apparently they not insured for it. I have politely smiled back and said “sure thing”. Now, let me tell you about NZ insurance policies. All house holders get automatically insured for carpet burning/ damage and many other things. What contradicted with this weird owners request that they have electric bed blankets (can that make fire electrical damage )? , yes off course. Two heaters (if accidentally drop paper or clothing), massive fire properly damage!!! I hardly sleep and let me tell you if someone would wake the neighbourhood because of any accident that would be me! And save you for that matter! My advise to grumpy and unhappy owner if you got bad morning- don’t let your negativity to go out on your customers! Furthermore buy not China made electric extension cords 🔌 the one you got in unit number 4 was heating up more then the heater itself and fix all electrical sockets as it’s damaged and doesn’t apply NZ standard! Call electrician to fix all! Also the master bed is so soft that when you go to sleep - the mattress sinks all the way to the floor. Better to sleep in the single rooms in the second kids bedroom.
And lastly Smile as it’s priceless! And always remember there is a light of any dark tunnel! Don’t appreciate negative people. Would rather camp 🏕
Would never stay nor recommend !!!

Response from Laydan Mortensen, Owner at High Street Living Motel
Responded 26 Jul 2021
Thank you for your review. Shocked when you said to the motel owner that this place felt like home. We don't know any motel that allows naked flames in their rooms. The motel owner's father and many brothers were volunteer firefighters for many years, and have attended many fatal fires caused by misuse of candles. The motel owner does not feel she was not grumpy or unhappy, just direct. Th electrical socket was damaged when you rearranged the bedroom to your liking. We found it the day you left and have had it repaired. All our electrical work is inspected by a qualified electrician and complies with AS/NZS 3000 wiring rules. Bedding firmness is a personal preference and our beds may not suit everyone. Good luck camping around the rest of New Zealand.

The reception was very friendly and helpful. This is actually my first time staying in a motel, and it blew away my expectations. rooms were welcoming and cosy. Everything was so well equipped and maintained. Beds were comfy! Would highly reccomend anyone to stay here! They also had a nice booklet on the dining table for information about this small little town on what to eat, menu, maps etc..

I really can't thank Janine and her family enough for the attention to high quality accommodations, attention to detail, kindness...I give them a 5 diamond rating because of their dedication to cleanliness and as well updating all the units that I have stayed in. A true Kiwi experience. They were always there when I needed them and gave me the moral support needed during the Covid 19. Janine and her husband have invested a lot of time and money updating everything in all the units here. The location is perfect close to all amenities needed as well as bush walks, ferry, beaches, and parks. Such a quaint town...really enjoyed Picton. Thank You Janine and family!!!!

A really beautifully presented room. We had a studio which was perfect for our overnight stay before catching the ferry. Lovely bedding and amenities, everything you need and more. Friendly welcome from the owners and recommendations of where to get food. We went with The Barn right across the road and got 10% of our meals since we were staying at High Street Motel. Extra points for having shampoo, conditioner, hand and body wash in refillable pump bottles rather than the single use little bottles. Would certainly stay again. Thanks!

We stayed in High Street Living motel for one night with our little Maltese.
There is a special pet friendly unit for dogs which was very clean and comfortable, with a play area outside the back door.
The owner was awesome, he left a heater on for us before we arrived,
The room was perfect, with electric blankets and a nice kitchen.
Bathroom was nice too.
We all had a very quiet and peaceful sleep.
I can confidently recommend this motel if you are staying in Picton.
