Detailed Reviews
We stayed a long weekend here over a very busy time but were truly impressed with the cleanliness and management of the camp and facilities. Toilets/showers were cleaned at 5am! And 3 more times daily with the last one at around 10pm. The kitchen was immaculate! And the grounds were well mown, well planted and rubbish-free. Little mounds of new planting created nooks and crannies to camp amongst and buffered any noise from larger groups. And there was no noise between 10pm and 7am!!
We came here a couple of times 20 plus years ago when our kids were very young and are a little sad we missed all those years in between...what a treasure! A great family venue...and who cares about the lack of cellphone reception?!

Thanks so much for your review. I'm pleased you came back and rediscovered our little piece of paradise! This is a great place for family and friends to get together and experience some classic kiwi camping at its best! We ae situated right on the edge of an awesome beach which is safe for swimming and other water sports. There is a lovely happy family vibe out in the camp at this time of the year. It's so nice to see so many people getting out and enjoying all we have to offer here

We have been coming to Okains Bay Annually on Labour weekend for the past 14 years. Labour weekend 2020 was one of the best so far.
Big shout out to the managers, the place is looking amazing after having to remove the 60 year old pine trees. the new plantings are really taking off and we love how the camping areas have ben laid out.
\keep up the good work and see you next year.

Thanks for the review. I'm really pleased you like what we're doing here with our landscaping efforts. It was great to have you back again for another Labour Weekend! It was an awesome weekend with so many happy families out there getting in to the classic kiwi camping we have on offer here and enjoying the great outdoors together. Was so nice to see so many familiar faces, but we had a lot of first time campers here for the weekend too which was also great to see!

Thanks for your review. This is a great place for families to come, relax and enjoy what nature has to offer. As you mention our beautiful beach is very safe for swimming and other water sports and we have lovely views and walks available in our area. We also have a playground, including a flying fox which is very popular with the kids. We have great customers here, which really helps to make this campground an awesome place to be.

Campground was quite open, most of the big trees have been cut down, spacious, facilities were clean, didn't use the kitchen facilities. Great play ground for children, very noisy from 9.30pm to 11 pm though.. The office is frustrating, you email for relevant info and nobody gets back to you even after 2 weeks of waiting.. Won't go back even though it is a nice part of the world.

Had a great stay here over the Xmas/NY period. Although the campground was fully booked there was plenty of space. Great for families or groups. Facilities are well kept and clean. No mobile service/internet-just what we all needed. Will be back :)

Such a special place for a relaxed camping holiday. Spacious, super clean facilities, helpful friendly staff and the new barrier gate and covid restrictions meant a much quieter campground. Bliss. Thanks.

So pleased you had such a great time here! We've had so many positive comments about the installation of the new gates, they have been a big hit! So nice to see all our lovely customers, smiling and happy, enjoying everything on offer here. Our awesome beach is such a great place - it's safe for swimming and other watersports and if you're lucky you might even get to spot a dolphin out there!

An informal site under mature pine trees directly behind the beach.
Simple and clean facilities.
Note that the road to Okains Bay from the main Akaroa road is very steep and tight, about the most challenging that we that found on New Zealand for a camper van so be warned.

Okains Bay campground is actually NO DOGS. Trip advisor lists it here as pet friendly, but it is not.
Love camping at Okains Bay. It convenient and beautiful. Wish I could bring my beloved fur baby with me though.

Yes, sorry, not sure why Tripadvisor lists us as dog friendly, I've only just become aware that it does. We love dogs but the policy is definitely no dogs in our camping ground please!

I was part of a group of uni students that decided to get away for the weekend to celebrate a birthday while just having a break from a much-needed work break... No better place to go than Okain's Bay. I could even just award 5 stars for the gorgeous dogs that greeted us at reception upon arrival. Beautiful beach with amazing scenery and facilities. Can camp at any spot that pleases with only a few steps to the beach, kitchen, toilets, or playground. The staff were lovely and understanding, not at all opposed to the idea of having students being a little rowdy. The ocean is very safe to swim in and there's quite a bit to explore around the area. Will definitely have to come again!

I'm pleased you enjoyed your time camping with us. At this time of the year things are a lot quieter so we are more able to accommodate groups such as yours. As long groups stay within our rules we are more than happy to have them here. We always try our best to ensure all our customers have a good camping experience.

My little girl and I set up a tent and stayed here for two nights. I really like the spot because it was quiet and we could hide ourselves away amongst the pine trees. We found the camp grounds to be clean and tidy and had plenty of room to spread out. It was a busy weekend there but we didn't seem like people were struggling for space or facilities. There are two facilities blocks that had kitchen (fridge which got a bit full when more people arrived, sinks with hot water, stove tops and kettle and toaster, BYO utensis), bathrooms with coin operated showers (very clean) and a laundry (coin operated) with a large chest freezer. The place is perfect for kids. There is the beach and estuary, a little playground with flying foxes, a bike track and endless pine forests to explore and the reception house has two horses, cows and a pig and a dog to say hello to. We ventured into Akaroa each afternoon which is about 20 min drive. There is a small dairy up the road though. We were lucky to have lovely sun most of the time and it was great.
