We had a ground floor apartment facing the water. This is the prettiest view I have ever imagined - watch sea birds in the late afternoon and enjoy sunrise over the hills the next morning. It is only a short walk to the Bakery Coffee shop in one direction, and along to Ma Maison restaurant in another for delicious French cuisine.
Great location _ on the water. Facility is pristinely clean. Bed was super comfortable. The rooms are spacious. Kayaks available for us on the harbour. But sadly the whole facility is very tired, lacking maintenance. The units are shabby. This motel is in one of New Zealand's iconic situations and such presentation lets it down. We stayed in a motel in Picton for $6 dearer and the presentation left this for dead.
We spent two nights at Akaroa Waterfront Motel. There are actually two separate Motels (or buildings) so make sure you know which one you are booking. The room we booked was the motel facing 90degrees away from the harbour (reduced view of the harbour) where as the second building has 180degree horizontal views of the harbour (much better as each unit looks out over the harbour). Anyways, this motel must be the coolest motel in Akaroa. Plenty of benches to soak up the harbour view. BBQ available. Spacious units. 3.5-4 star. Laid back atmosphere. Definitely would recommend.
Stayed here in 2019 in the Driftwood part - on the right, it was fine then a bit tired decor wise, but good enough to want to come back. This visit was as a family with my son, daughter in law and 2 grandsons. We arrived at 7.15pm, a note with the key was on the office door as agreed. It was ground floor 2 bedroom accommodation in the left-hand building. During our 3 night stay not once were we acknowledged by any member of staff; not a good morning/evening, hello or how are you, nothing! Yes the location is awesome, just a huge pity such great business potential is being lost by truly bad customer service. One thing NZ is loved for all over the world is the way we greet and treat visitors. In the current tourist business climate I would have thought customer service would be an absolute priority. Unfortunately on the first night my grandson had an accident in the bed, so we stripped the bed and checked the mattress was not wet. Later a member of staff came to our door and asked if we needed towels - no hello or introduction - I said I'm awfully sorry, but my grandson had an accident and wet the bed, but that I had stripped it and the bedding was in the bedroom. Oh my goodness the reaction was terrible she stormed out, came back slammed the bedroom door, banging around, after which she asked if there was any rubbish, there was, she dealt with that then was gone. We all looked at one and other very shocked. Toddlers do have accidents and we had brought our own umbrella sheet it was just he slept for a long time and it seeped out, they did have a waterproof under-sheet so no harm done. This was a special birthday trip for me from my son and daughter in law we all love Akaroa and I recommended the Waterfront myself so I feel very, very disappointed.…
The motel does have a lovely waterfront location, the rooms are well appointed and spacious. Lovely views over the harbour and good parking. The outdoor games are a nice touch and there is also an onsite gym for guest use.
