Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Lovely views, very clean room with a balcony to enjoy the sunsets. Right on the waterfront with ample car parking. The office was only open for limited hours due to staff shortages, but this wasn’t a problem. Only negative was the bed which was not very comfortable. However clean and with electric blankets, which was much appreciated in winter. Excellent location and the room was very spacious with good cooking facilities.

Great location and beautiful little town and people. So glad we stopped here overnight on our way from Lake Tekapo to Kaikoura. Good value and lovely spot for our family of four. Loved visiting the gin distillery, eating the mussels in the Madeira Hotel for dinner and visiting the absolutely brilliant museum. French Cemetery was also really interesting and lunch at The Commons was fantastic. Everything was fabulous.

We booked an upstairs unit in the Driftwood motel block. We loved breakfast on our private little balcony overlooking the water. The staff were exemplry in their natural friendlyness and willingness to help. The motels are quite and well situated away from the busy part of town but a stroll away from cafes and restaurants. We were very impressed with the motel's policies for caring for the environment. Very close to the Giant's House which is a must do!

The motel is pretty basic, though comfortable enough for our one-night stay. Check-in/out is completely without contact so we had no interaction with staff. If you want to cook, the kitchen seemed to have the necessary basics. The location is good, an easy walk to anywhere in the small town. It was fine for our needs but if I were to go again I think I'd look for a bed-and-breakfast instead. And in general, Akoroa is only worth the stop if you have at least 2 nights so you can take advantage of some of the tours on offer.

We throughly enjoyed our stay here. The setting is gorgeous. The motel is fairly old and a bit tired, but very comfortable and it has everything you need. We have recommended this motel to friends and family who are looking at a comfortable place where they can relax. It’s great to be able to walk to the main street in one minute.

Beautiful, convenient location, totally functional, but dated inside. The lakefront picnic tables seem to appeal to groups who want to hang out together in the late evening, so you can expect some noise from others socializing. 6 stars for the setting and views, 2.5 stars for needing a decor refresh ASAP. Would return, but personally would prefer to pay more, for an updated interior.

The room did not match the listing on Tripadvisor. Not one picture they showed is of the room or hotel you get to stay in. The Hotel next door is also managed by the same people, so I expressed my disappointment to the management without a satisfactory conclusion. The room was also not clean with food crumbs and chips of the furniture and the bathroom was poorly cleaned.

Response from Elise C, General Manager at Akaroa Waterfront Motels
Responded 28 Feb 2023
Dear Daniel Thank you for your message and we are sorry to hear that the room you stayed in did not match the listing on TripAdvisor. Unfortunately, Tripadvisor is a third party platform with 202 photos showing, some provided by the motel but most of them provided by guests or anyone who tags the motel. You however told us you only look at the first few pictures. We are only 1 motel, with have 24 units divided in 7 unit types in 2 buildings. To avoid disappointment, I would recommend to book directly on our website and not through a third-party website who is using a third-party booking platform, where the communication can be lost. Yes, you came to see us at reception, and we apologized for the inconvenience, but we also explained: we are in high demand season, the waterfront units have been fully booked for months, while you had made your booking a couple of days before arrival and maybe the 1 bedroom suite was the only option at that time. You will understand we couldn’t cancel someone else’s booking in order to fit you in. We did offer the waterfront 3 bedroom though, even if it was much bigger than your request and it was waterfront, we propose you to even take a look, but you declined, just mentioning “you were looking at your options.” I am not sure what was the issue with the bathroom as it wasn’t put to our attention while you were with us. However, we do apologize if the sofa had crumbs on it. This is certainly not the level of service we strive to provide our guests. You will notice from other reviews; this is not a common statement. Please know that we take cleanliness very seriously and have addressed the issue with our housekeeping team to ensure that such oversights do not occur in the future. We have tried our best to find solutions due to the circumstances and came to see you a few times but unfortunately there were not really discussion possible during your short time with us, and only comment received was: “we are not sure we are staying”. When you finally made your mind 1h30 later you didn’t even advise our staff. Through the summer, we have had a lot of people staying in that same unit, north facing, only meters from the harbour and they have been really enjoying their stay. We would just also recommend you book directly with the motel or read full room description from third party website for your next holiday. Sincerely Elise and the AWM team

Fabulous view from absolute waterfront unit. Nice deck area and well laid out room. Very clean and comfortable. Didn't use facilities but BBQ, pentanque and outdoor chess provided. Didn't actually meet any staff due to check in process.
