Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This is a cosy wee hostel in the middle of a beautiful, not to be missed town. Really enjoyed my stay here. The garden is wonderful and the hosts were very welcoming.

Nearly a five - bathrooms are a bit basic but otherwise all good. Friendly and relaxed atmosphere in a good location, decent free WiFi, comfortable beds, woodburner in lounge, decent kitchen and dining area and plenty of space in the garden to chill or eat outside. Supermarket and i-site just two minutes walk away.

It was 3 of us travelling so we checked in a room with 1 bunk bed and 1 single bed.it was near the toilet and kitchen. The best part of this backpacker:1)location is near their city centre .2)kitchen is fully equipped.even condiments such as salt, dried herbs are provided which i couldnt find anywhere else in any backpacker that i have been to.3) bed is comfortable with towels and extra blanket available. It was summer when we checked in so the room was pretty warm.might do need a fan instead.4)bathroom was clean.there was also towels to keep the floor dry.hot and cold shower.5)buget friendly

I think this place must have changed hands as apparently it used to be really nice. In fact you can see the work that has been put in in the past, for example in the garden. No longer. It is now neglected, run down and dirty.
The displayed FFP was well out of date, the fire extinguishers had not been checked for a couple of years. The rooms smelled, the tea towels were dirty and were not changed (we were there for two nights, so I know), the wash hand basin was actually dusty round the edge. The famous hammock was broken, the BBQ was defunct. I could go on. There is no one looking after the place. They call it 'self check in' but the owner must think it is also self-cleaning and self-maintaining. It's a shame because it's in a nice spot, but it's currently not a nice place to stay.

This "hostel" is more a squat than anything else. No staff works there, you have to self check in and you're supposed to receive the codes for the front door and the room by e-mail. We never received that mail, but another guest opened to us.

After trying to call the contact number written on the dashboard ( same one we received in our booking E mail) , no one ever answered and the number blocked me. This number happened to be from the last owner.

We finally found another number who answered after one hour. The only staff member lives upstairs and gave us the codes.

The place is cold, dirty, smelly, seems like the trash bins haven't been put away in weeks and there is dirty dishes all over the kitchen.
Seems like there is no cleaning done at all in there.

We paid 75$ for a room that hasn't been cleaned or vacuumed , the bed was nice and comfortable though.

This place needs some attention from its owner, whoever that is ... It could be such a friendly and beautiful place.

The door of room number 2 on ground level doesn't lock from inside therefore anyone can enter in your room at night.
Kitchen is dirty, small and basics are missing, such as glasses and enough cutlery.
The 2 bathrooms (one for at least 15 people) are small and dirty.
The room number 2 is small, suffocating, no view outside, there is no adequate furniture (cannot hang anything, no closet). Carpet is old and dirty.

Filthy bathroom massive clump of hair in shower, dirt, hair and splattering on floors and walls of what I dont even want to know. Phone number of "manager" not in operation. No one there. Bedrooms filthy, hair on pillows and on beds, debris on floors, kitchen and tables covered in crumbs and dirty dishes, lounge filthy dirty. I have never post4ed before. Do not stay here. Not to mention that I requested a refund and was ignored. I then tried to get help from booking.com they refuse to refund because I didnt take photos. Shame on you Chez La Mer. This level of filth is unacceptable at any time let alone in the time of the COVID Pandemic.

The beds are uncomfortable and the shower is horrible BUT there is unlimited wifi(just ask for more codes). They only take cash. Area is cute so it's not a reason not to come but be careful with this hostel. The kitchen is also pretty weirdly laid out.

Upon arrival to the hostel we were greeted by the manager on shift. She had a go at us for 5 minutes for not ringing the doorbell. Despite us apologising profusely for this, her monologue dragged on!
She also made us have an extra room, despite requesting only 5 beds, she have us a twin a double and a triple! Enough to sleep 7!
I have stayed here before and was served by a bloke that worked here. He was great! He doesn't service the poor service rating!

The showers are a joke! can you call a cubical a shower if no water runs from the shower head? The one downstairs is slightly better, but that's not saying much. The kitchen, and rooms all are fine. Clean, decent space.

Can get quite noisy as the walls are pretty thin! You won't get much of a lie in.
There are much nicer and cheaper places to stay in akaroa! I would not stay here again!

I’m covered in bed bug bites from this hovel, disgraceful and fraudulent business. The yard has the stench of males car piss, the owner a coward who will abuse a woman over the phone. More akin to a squat
