Not sure where to start. It was one of the highlights of our holiday in New Zealand. From the moment we arrived to a warm greeting from Katherine who showed us to our room to the moment we left was spectacular. The setting is so beautiful and quiet, the room was spotless and the bed was one of the most comfortable I've ever slept in. At night it's so dark that you can't help but have a good night's sleep. We had an early start the next day and Hugh and Katherine were already up to make us breakfast and coffee. We had a lovely chat with them over breakfast and Hugh helped us load the cases into the car. All in all it was perfect. If you are looking for somewhere to stay in akaroa then look these guys up you will not be disappointed. Only sad bit was we couldn't stay longer. Thanks to Katherine and Hugh for a lovely stay and delicious breakfast. 😋

An unbelievably romantic getaway ...from the babbling brook and baaa-ing sheep, to the sunset and the stars, to the outdoor tub! We made eggs on the outdoor grill. We dined on the porch in candlelight. The kitchen was stocked with wonderful coffee, fresh fruit and the refrigerator was full. The beautifully decorated and comfortable big bed and room was so cozy, even flowers in a pitcher. The absolute highlight of our month in New Zealand. We'll never forget it. Our hosts were warm and friendly but gave us our privacy. Internet worked in the main house. But who needed that?!

My husband and I stayed here on our last night in NZ after a 6 week trip. It was so nice to have a large and spacious room and a comfortable bed. The views are amazing.
Katherine and Hugh are a delight to chat with and Katherine makes an amazing breakfast with vegetables from her garden and home made yogurt.

I was even able to sneak in an early morning run with the cows and sheep before breakfast.

You cannot beat the price either!

Upon arrival at Coombe Farm, we were already blown away by its beautiful surroundings and lovely garden setting. The restored home is something you would find out of a home decor magazine. The house is bright and spacious with wonderful attention to detail. Our King ensuite room looked out to the front yard - it was quiet, cosy, and very clean. Our bathroom had a shower stall, heater, and a heated towel rack which was a nice addition as it got cool in the evenings. You can make tea in your room and there were also little heart-shaped shortbread cookies. Free wifi and parking. One of the main features is the breakfast! We had fruit, yogurt, cereal, fresh juice, tea, coffee, and Kathrine makes an outstanding cooked breakfast with eggs, bacon, etc. Truly a perfect way to start the day! Kathrine recommended a little hike from the house to a little waterfall nearby - it was as nice walk after a long day of travel. You'll see and hear cicadas, sheep, and birds. The roses, dahlias, and fruit trees in the garden are lovely. Hugh looks after the farm - I wish we stayed longer and were able to experience some herding and shearing! This place is very special and ranks in my top 5 B&B's around the world. Great value for exceptional quality. Highly recommended to stay at least 1 or 2 nights. We hope to return one day. Thank you Kathrine and Hugh!

Out of the many highlights my girlfriend and I experienced while travelling through the beautiful country of New Zealand, the Coombe Farm Bed and Breakfast and Akaroa as a whole rate very highly and I can only recommend a stay there.

Katherine and Hugh are excellent hosts and the house is so lovely displaying great artwork and an impressive book collection. Breakfast was very delicious, the company delightful and the view in front of the house is breathtaking.

We genuinely couldn't have asked for any more and I can only echo the good and kind words of my fellow travellers, who already complimented Katherine and Hugh for this outstanding B&B and their friendliness.

The only problem with staying at Coombe Farm is that afterwards nothing else will be as nice. Imagine a working sheep farm with thousands of sheep combined with an immaculate, modern bed and breakfast in a beautifully restored farm house full of the owners' wonderful art. This incredible combination is the work of Katherine and Hugh Fraser, the gracious, generous, intelligent hosts. The house is decorated with exquisite taste and reflects a personal visual appreciation of ordinary yet charming objects. If you are lucky you may be there for a tour of the sheep raising and shearing and the work of the dogs herding them. Walks up to the ridge of the farm look down on beautiful hills with fields for grazing with the ocean in the distance. The house is surrounded by flower gardens and the house was full of cut flowers when we were there.
I believe all three rooms are beautifully furnished and comfortable. We stayed in the king bedroom which has it's own ensuite bathroom, perfectly fitted with modern fixtures.

We stayed at the B&B for 2 nights and even the poor weather didn’t detract. The house is beautiful and the hosts warm, welcoming and so friendly. I could have stayed here another few nights quite happily.

We’ve stayed in many top quality B&B’s in NZ, and this ranks up with the very best.

There’s a farm to enjoy and Hugh walked us round the lower grounds, provided stories of the farm and we even got to see some sheep shearing. Katherine bakes and cooks both beautifully in among looking after the extensive garden, the house and much more.

You will not be disappointed if you choose Coombe Farm.

I am not normally a bed and breakfast enthusiast. However, when all 126 reviews of a place are "excellent" I just had to stay here for myself and see what all the fuss was about. Only one night was available and we booked both upstairs rooms in the main house facing the front garden. We are so very happy that we did as this turned out to be our favorite stay on the South Island. We arrived near midnight as we had taken Arthur's Pass from the opposite side of the island that morning. Let me warn you that the skinny mountain road which zig zags towards Akaroa is not fun at night (especially for us Americans driving on the wrong side of the road). We entered the farm and poor Hugh had waited up for us and helped carry our bags upstairs.
The one room with the king bed and the small en suite bathroom was a bit nicer than the room across the hall with the queen bed and extra twin. The second room had a bathroom down the hall. The bathrooms had nice products but also an overly scented air freshener in the toilet (which I mentioned to Katherine did not fit with the elegance of the place). We all slept comfortably and were woken up early in the morning by the sound of many birds. The most distinctive was a very loud bellbird with a lovely voice. It was special. We went downstairs and there was a very nice breakfast waiting for us. No hot items other than coffee and tea but a lovely display of fruit salad, meats and cheeses and baked goods. We were very happy with it. We chatted with Katherine Fraser who is both an English beauty and has a sweet and charming personality. She told us about how this was the sheep farm that Hugh grew up on. We told her that we were interested in seeing the sheep but, unfortunately, it was the day Hugh was taking the lambs away from their sheep moms and he was doing so on a property not nearby. I thought it probably best for my kids not to experience that particular scene in any case. They did get to meet the pet orphan sheep named Neil and his buddy the working dog Grizz. My daughter loved Neil and my son and Grizz ran happily around the property like old friends. Katherine planted a lovely English garden full of flowers right in front of the main house. We sadly had to leave by 10:30 so that she could ready the rooms for the next guests. My husband didn't mind having to leave the rooms but would have been happier to be told that we could still explore the property for a bit longer as we did not get to see the waterfall that other guests have mentioned. In any case, we are grateful to the Frasers for such a wonderful stay at their peaceful and lovely property and would highly recommend it to anyone coming to Akaroa. It is only a short drive to the town. You will not regret it.

We stayed at Coombe Farm with friends, and thought it superb. Our hosts Katherine and Ian could not have been more welcoming. The house itself is beautifully furnished, and Katherine's interest in linens and textiles is evident everywhere, from her stunning collection of quilts, through gorgeous curtains and cushions and table clothes which appear throughout the house. The garden is even more beautiful. It was a profusion of roses, lavender and a hundred other flowers, the scent of which filled the air.

Everything was beautifully done, and generously provided. Breakfast was excellent, even by Nz's very high standards. Home made muesli, freshly baked croissant, home made jams, newly laid eggs, but also fresh avocados, tomatoes, yogurts and more. There were lovely, freshly made scones when we returned from our afternoon out. Warm fires in the evening. A big bath ( as well as shower) for a good soak after a day's walking.

This is a gorgeous place to stay, with charming and discerning hosts. We absolutely loved it!
