Many travelers commend Summer Island Maldives for its array of exceptional amenities, including a spa and multiple dining options, set alongside picturesque beaches perfect for snorkeling despite some noting occasional limitations. The rooms earn praise for their cleanliness and comfort, with effective air conditioning, though a few guests encountered issues with allocations and upgrades. The resort's service stands out, with staff members providing friendly and attentive care, contributing to the hotel's festive and welcoming atmosphere. While the all-inclusive options are generally seen as good value, some guests consider the additional charges for premium services excessive.

Nearly 28 years since our last long hall flight, a honeymoon in Kenya, we were at last celebrating our covid delayed 25th wedding anniversary. Our Etihad flight from Heathrow to Malé via Abu Dhabi had taken 16 hours so we were glad to quickly find the Summer Island desk and soon be ushered to the resort’s speedboat where we were handed a bottle of water and cool flannel.

There were very dark clouds on the horizon and the pilot was clearly racing over the rolling waves. We felt safe enough, we think, but a sea plane might be the safer option for anyone who doubts their sea legs.

The weather looked ominous to say the least, particularly when every forecast we had looked at for the preceding week had predicted rain and storms for the duration of our 10 day trip. With hindsight our advice is to completely ignore such forecasts as every day was baking and blue with just a few minutes of daytime rain throughout our trip.

A quick walk along the jetty and we were in the island’s sandy reception drinking a non alcoholic peach belinini. We had emailed ahead requesting that our Premium Beach Villa was on the sunset side and received a non-committal but optimistic reply, so were disappointed to be told none were available (except, it transpired, for the other couple on our flight who obviously had a stronger call than our 25th 😉).

As you have probably picked up from other reviews, the east/sunrise side of the island (jetty and reception) is the cooler, breezy side compared to west/sunset side (pool, bars and restaurants). The difference between the two sides was extraordinary during our stay with the sunrise side always breezy, sometimes windy and usually very choppy, whilst the sunset side was always calm and rippling. The heat literally hits you as you step between the trees separating each side. However, after 10 days I genuinely couldn’t say which side I prefer as both are beautiful and the problem was easily remedied by spending the morning sun on our sun loungers in the east then taking our beach towels to the west when the shade covered our side in the early afternoon. This way we got the best of both worlds, something we probably wouldn’t have done if we had been granted our room choice.

Premium Beach Villas are beautiful, air-conditioned and plenty big enough with a large comfortable bed, fridge, Nespresso machine and kettle. The large bathroom has a shower plus jacuzzi bath and is open to the sky meaning it is always fresh and comfortable. The private area outside, protected by just enough trees and bushes to avoid spoiling the view, is effectively on the beach and has table and chairs, a lounger and sunbeds that are yours alone. The villa was cleaned perfectly daily, in our case by a friendly, incredibly hardworking gent who visited twice each day, the second occasion to refresh beach towels, top up water etc and to tidy outside facilities.

As we are not big drinkers we opted for Half Board safe in the knowledge that we would drink as much as we fancied and still make a considerably saving on the All Inclusive option. The strategy was to enjoy the ample breakfasts and to snack at lunchtime, either from the expensive bar menu or from a variety of sweet or salty snacks that we brought with us. As it happens we only ate in the bar once, our departure day. The room’s fridge includes two large bottles of water, with extra provided on demand each evening and three bottles was generally enough for us each day. We packed three mini bottles of concentrated squash to make the water more interesting and only went to the pay bar a couple of times throughout. Our food and drink budget was 600 dollars and we lived well within this whilst never holding back, and tipping, I hope, at the level the wonderful staff deserve.

Along with water villa guests, premium beach guests are allocated to the Hiya Restaurant for each meal. Hiya and the neighbouring Avi cocktail bar overhang the stunning clear blue sea and we honestly haven’t eaten in a more genial setting. On day one we were met by Luftshaan, who remained our waiter for the whole holiday and was first class in learning our preferences so that he could pre-empt our needs.

On our first visit to Hiya Luftshaan introduced the restaurants head chef Mohit who understood one of us was vegetarian and asked about any needs before explaining what could and couldn’t be eaten, including gelatine for example. He made it clear he was always available to clarify if we had any queries throughout our stay. At Hiya, starters and desserts are buffet style but mains are a la carte, options including several meat and fish choices and one vegetarian option. Each meal was high quality and the only complaint is that vegetarian options are quite limited, invariably curry or pasta based, and could at least do with days being mixed a bit to avoid runs of one or the other. Strict vegetarians should beware rennet in cheese. Except water, drinks are chargeable outside of all inclusive. Breakfasts are excellent with a decent range of hot and cold options including an egg station.

After each evening meal at Hiya we ambled next door to Avi to continue the shark watch over cocktails. Outside of all inclusive you are looking at between 12 and 18 US dollars for a cocktail, not cheap by any standards, but you can expect decent versions of all the classics and more, packed full of premium spirit. There’s only occasional live music at Avi, most of the entertainment being focused on Nevi Bar, 5 mins walk down the beach. A special shout out goes to the two lads who run the Avi bar, very good at what they do and at making their guests feel at home on first name terms.

Activities at the resort such as dining and diving are incredibly expensive, sometimes eye watering so, and none included within the all inclusive. We didn’t use the Sp or free gym or buy anything at the gift shop. The resort do provide two complimentary daily snorkelling boat trips to local reefs where you can see turtles, rays and sharks but we did not make use of these. We kept ourselves to the rocks and corals forming the sea breaks on the east side where you will see thousands of beautiful fish. Snorkels and underwater cameras are a must, ideally fins too as these are mandatory on the resort trips.

For us one of the highlights of the holiday was spotting the large adult sharks and sting rays from the restaurant and bar terraces. We saw numerous black tips plus a nurse shark and several very large sting rays. These are all harmless to humans and skittish so you are unlikely to get the chance to get very close, although we were lucky enough to have a six foot-ish black tip pass close by on one occasion whilst snorkelling beach side of the sea break. You will see baby sharks a few feet off the shore. Other common wildlife includes large fruit bats, a couple of resident herons and numerous lizards and crabs. Didn’t see a mosquito!

It is fair to say that this is a special place where you are forced to relax, in the company of attentive and highly personable staff who take a pride in their island. We certainly hope we’ll have an opportunity to return.

We went on our honeymoon with our 1 year old baby

PROs
Beautiful island. Not too big so you can get around easily.
Staff are really helpful. Luthor in the restaurant was absolutely brilliant- so helpful, particularly with our little one
Room cleaned twice a day. Naseem was really thorough and again very helpful with our little boy
There was a gap between lunch and dinner and they made our son dinner everyday which was great, although we had to ask for this and some staffed seemed unsure if they were allowed to do it
Food was really delicious. Loads of choice in the two restaurants and all tasted really fresh.
The spa was lovely. The lady that did our massages was brilliant. One of the best massages I’ve had.

CONs
We were all inclusive but we ended up paying extras. There was only one cocktail a day. Other AIs I’ve been to before offer everything - room service, cocktails etc but here we ended up paying for a coffee, cocktails etc
The wine isn’t good, for me personally it was undrinkable. It was too sweet but there are a lot of Germans so not sure whether they cater to them but I couldn’t drink it and bought wine separately which was at 50 dollar minimum which is pretty expensive.
The gap between meals was quite long, for our child mostly. 2-7pm is quite a long break without food.
There isn’t a lot for children to do but I think it’s more aimed at couples anyway.

Tips
Take the plane. The boat took about 1h15 minutes and there was no life jacket for my little boy.
Premium access is a must as the restaurant Hiya was so peaceful
There is a windy side and a calm side to the island. It was actually really hot when we went so we often sat on the windy side but our villa was on the calm side.
Take snorkels and flippers with you. Shop is expensive for those but reasonable for other things.
But they don’t sell baby wipes in the shop or any baby formula or food so stock up on that

Dear X7183CEdanielleh Thanks for choosing us as your vacation destination, as well as for sharing a great review about your experience. It is always a pleasure receiving feedback from our much appreciated guests. We are very much delighted to hear of your feedback that our staff is really helpful. Thank you for the motivating words, which we are of course very happy to pass on to the relevant employees. We would also like to refer to your point regarding the all inclusive offer. Basic all inclusive is limited, we are working on a premium all inclusive where more drinks are included. Minibar and room service is on extra charge – as we are not an all inclusive resort. We are very grateful that you have taken the time to review us and give us your honest feedback. This will definitely help us to improve ourselves. Thanks again and we hope to welcome you again! With kind regards on behalf of the whole team of Summer Island Maldives

Our previous and first visit to the Maldives was to Kuramathi in 2019. We were looking for a smaller island experience and Summer Island was perfect. Exquisite beaches and clear blue water, no vehicles and a few minutes walk across the sand to wherever you want to go.
We stayed all-inclusive in a Premium bungalow on the sunset (less windy) side of the island which was very clean and modern and right on a perfect beach, which we mostly seemed to have to ourselves. The air-con was a necessary evil, but very noisy.
Premium bungalow and water villa guests get to use the over water a la carte restaurant, which is very nice with a lovely view, but once we had tried the buffet restaurant we never went back. It has a much better atmosphere and significantly better food choice, with lovely candlelit tables in the evenings. The food is good but mostly spicy, which my husband loved (me not so much). Not as much fresh fish as you might expect.
The all-inclusive wine was truly appalling (and I am usually happy with any two for £10 variety from Asda!). We couldn't tell the difference between the white, red and rose, and all were warm and sweet. A real disappointment, and for possibly the only reason for not rushing back to Summer Island, given that a bottle of wine from the wine list was minimum $50. On Kuramathi our AI package included a good selection of much better quality wine by the bottle.

Amazing couples retreat. My boyfriend and I stayed for 6 nights all inclusive. We arrived late due to a delayed flight and the staff arranged for a meal to be put aside for us. The staff decorated our room for my boyfriends birthday and presented him with a lovely cake which we couldn't finish so they had the leftovers delivered to our room. Joynal was an excellent waiter and always made sure a table was made up for us. The food was very good and catered for a variety of travelers. The afternoon tea was a treat at the end of the day to wash down with cold beers and admire the sunset. The accommodation was spacious and clean with incredible views. There were free daily snorkelling trips however kit was pricey to hire and you're not allowed to snorkel without all the kit (snorkel, mask and finns). Bar staff were incredibly polite and helpful throughout our trip. Overall the staff were exceptional and certainly made our trip far easier. We were fortunate to have good weather for our stay and swimming around the island was safe with a variety of marine life to observe.

Our stay at Summer Island Maldives exceeded our expectations from all aspects.
We originally planned to stay for 8 days, but it was so amazing there, that we have extended our stay with 5 more days.

We first stayed at the beach villa for 5 nights (located 40 meters from the beach, in the sand) which was super amazing. The room had everything, ranging from fresh water available for free every day, super nicely smelling shower gel, shampoo, conditioner, body lotion, and free coffee too.

The breakfast, lunch and dinner was super varied, we could pick from several fresh fish, seafood, chicken, beef, sushi, soups, and high assortment of tropical fruits and deserts too.

But most importantly, I'dd highlight the staff, which is simply amazing compared to outher countries and resorts. Here, you can feel that they are honestly kind to you and love that they can work here at such a paradise. They did everything to help us, when we lost a purse, made several phonecalls and searched through the island too.

Which I also truly loved was the super small amount of mosquitous on this island, which was attributed to the weekly twicely happening mosquito replenishment.

Regarding the overwater villa, where we stayed for 7 nights, was itself heaven. :)
We could see the fish in the crystal clear waters, right below us under the rays of the morning sun. The room was super comfy - bed: 10/10, big, super good mattrasse, very clean, fully equipped. We could drink as much coffee as we wanted for free, also nespresso ones. Regarding the fresh water, they brought us bottled mineral water also as much as we wanted; compared to other resorts, where you sometimes have to pay for water.

One could see that everything was paid attention to when establishing the villas: there was legwash on every corner, not to bring the sand into your room; an also was also an outside shower if you were coming up from the sea to wash the salt from yourself. :)

Overall it was an amazing stay at Summer Island Maldives, I could nothing but reccommend it to everyone.

We had such a great time at Summer Island. We stayed in a water villa on the all inclusive plan for 6 nights and this was perfect for us. We requested to stay on the sunset side but the sunrise side would have been just as great as the sea was much calmer on this side, but not as good for snorkelling. Staff were so friendly and helpful throughout.
The free daily 1 hour snorkelling excursion was also great to book on to, bring your own snorkel and flippers or you can hire them from the dive centre on the island. We snorkelled every day around the island and saw amazing sea life - reef sharks, rays, turtles, so definitely worth bringing along.
The entertainment was fantastic, a live band for x2 evenings along with so many games to play in the bar area (badminton, pool, table tennis, darts, chess, table football).
Food was great quality, a buffet style with fresh cooking stations for eggs, pancakes, waffles at breakfast and various things for lunch and dinner. The sushi was so good!
The only challenge was using the gym facilities as due to COVID a 1hr slot had to be booked, everyone seemed to book every day for their week stay in advance so there was never a time available for us apart from 5am despite us seeing it empty most of the time. We would have been happy to share with a couple of other guests and sanitise as we go like gym facilities in the UK but were told this was not allowed.
Thank you for an amazing stay Summer Island, we would not hesitate to recommend!

Dear Leanne M We sincerely appreciate that you have taken the time to share a great TripAdvisor review about your vacation experience at Summer Island Maldives! Thanks for your kind words of compliments sharing that the water villa was perfect, the entertainment fantastic, food was great quality and you enjoyed the daily offered snorkeling trips. Due to Covid protection measures, we are not allowed to make the gym available to several guests at the same time. Unfortunately, guests do not always cancel when their plans have changed, which is why it can happen that the gym was empty despite a booking. However, as the demand has increased strongly, we have changed the rules and guests can now only book an appointment one day in advance. Thank you once again for your lovely recommendation of Summer Island Maldives. We certainly would love to welcome you back for another vacation soon! Let me begin by saying my room was very nice. The air conditioner really cooled the room and the wifi was dependable and strong enough for me to have zoom meetings. The staff was outstanding and I mean literally every staff member was lovely! By day 3 every staff member knows your room number and your drink preference.

A couple of things need to be addressed. The sand fleas are horrible, especially up near the reception desk. There was no bug spray that seemed to work against them. Also, the food was plentiful but was rarely ever served hot rather it is served at room temperature. The buffet changes but on a schedule, so be prepared for it to repete exactly if you are there for more than one week. The beach chairs are very tired and clearly need to be replaced.

All in all it was a nice first post pandemic vacation but I did decide to leave a week early. It just felt so repetitive I could do another week. Interestingly not one person asked me why I was leaving early. I would have thought they would have been concerned but clearly they did not care, I was not asking for a refund but it would have been nice to have someone ask if there was a problem.

Dear Adventure36774226351, Thank you for taking the time to write us a review and suggestions for improvements. We have well noted your concerns and we will try our best to improve on them. I regret no one asked why you were leaving early, we should have done that. We do have rotating menus on the buffet, I will discuss with chef to see how the food is getting cold and will make sure it gets fixed. We usually dont have sand fleas however, I will definitely check on this and make sure this is resolved as soon as possible. Beach chairs are in the process of being replaced soon. Thank you again for your comments, it is much appreciated. Kind regards, Mari

We got back last week from 2 weeks at summer island. We really enjoyed our stay at summer island it really is a beautiful place. The staff were all fantastic, so friendly and attentive. We stayed in a superior bungalow which was very clean and spacious. It was nice to have our own designated sun loungers on the beach. We mainly dined in the samuga restaurant which we found to have a good variety of food. We never had a problem finding something we liked. We used the spa for a massage which was very nice and again the staff were very friendly. It was slightly over priced and they add on a service charge automatically.
There were a few things that we found disappointing. We decided to upgrade to a water villa for our last two nights. It was an extra $230 a night for this. In our opinion it wasn’t worth it and for us a waste of money. The room itself was nice but not any better than our superior bungalow room. We were looking forward to using the steps down to the sea but we were unable to do this as the sea was so rough we wouldn’t have felt safe. Also the steps into the water were full of algae at the bottom and would have not wanted to use them. We were disappointed we didn’t have our own sun loungers on the beach when we moved to the water villa and there weren’t any free for us to use . We were now able to have use of the over water bar and restaurant included in our all inclusive package. The restaurant wasn’t much different than the main buffet restaurant as starter and desert was a buffet and then you ordered a main course from the menu.
We found there wasn’t much shade on the beach and it was a bit of a fight in the morning to get under the tree by our sun loungers.
There aren’t many sun loungers around the pool area maybe about 10 so you find people are running to get them as soon as one becomes free.
In the mornings you’d see staff cleaning up the beach however they never seemed to get to the part of the beach where our sun loungers were.
There were often offers on drinks So we decided to have some mojitos as the offer was 2x1. We thought this meant buy 2 for the price of 1 but it actually meant buy 2 get 1 free so just be careful.

We stayed at Summer Island Resort for 11 days in August 2021 in a water villa, full board. At first we thought that maybe because it is in August it won't be not the best season to go, but the weather was perfect, sometimes cloudy (2-3 h /day) but the water had the same mesmerising colour.
Our best experience at the island was the snorkeling, I think that we snorkeled in every possible location around the island. It's a snorkeling paradise! We saw a lot of corals and fishes, and even turtles(those on a snorkeling trip). They had on the island a diving and snorkeling centre "Diverland maldives" if you are interested in diving and we recommend you to start getting interested as soon as you arrive on the island for their offers because for the most of their activities, you need to subscribe beforehand (limitied number of participants).
The food was great, as we stayed in a water villa we could eat at the Hiya restaurant (that's where we ended to eat 90% of the meals, the food was always delicious and it wasn't too crowded) and the staff there was just soo respectful and friendly that when we needed to leave I knew that we'll miss them, and we do ...We sincerely thank them ( all the staff from the island) from the bottom of our hearts for making our stay in such a friendly atmosphere! The services were excellent from every point of view. We recommend for the future tourists of the island to chose the full board if they don't drink a lot of alcohol or soft drinks, for us (we drink mostly water) was the perfect choice, we had water, coffee and tea in the room, water at every meal at the restaurant.
We received two very nice surprises from them, the first one was for spending our honeymoon there and the second was for my birthday, which happened to be during our stay. I had a wholesome birthday!
Thank you Summer Island Resort!!! We surely plan to return to your resort!

I attended summer island and stayed in a superior beach bungalow which was a step out onto the beach. We stayed in rooms 377 and 357. The maids ensured the room was cleaned and tidied with fresh linen and towels everyday including beach towels. The linen always smelt divine and I wish the washing products was available at home in England.

The staff at Summer Island are the most genuine and attentive towards all guests. They offer exceptional customer service with always making sure you are happy. They are a credit to the management of this island. The people I would like to make a special mention to are -

Beddika
Ravindu
Sajit
Ragesh
Sana

The chefs provide exceptional food always making sure the quality is impeccable and there is always plenty available to accommodate all guests in the Samuga restaurant. I would suggest having a tip box for the chefs only as their job is fundamental for the success of dining.

We ate in the Hiya restaurant for our final meal which was worth saving till the end. The food was explicit. Worth paying the extra $20 for a change of scenery and different food options.

Myself and my girlfriend attended the sandbank beach private picnic which was a once in a lifetime experience. It was worth every penny as the picnic provided was delicious with delightful champagne. The sandbank was a hidden gem and the sand and sea was pure heaven.

My parents had a private sunset dinner on the beach and they provided them with a cake for their anniversary and decorated their room which was a very special touch. They also stated the food was incredible quality and was overall delighted with the experience. Myself and my girlfriend attended this which was excellent quality and amazing service throughout.

We all attended the Serena spa for the Adam and Eve couples massage. The massage was relaxing and relieved some stress from normal life.

Myself and my father attended the snorkelling adventure excursion. The trip was absolute ace. We saw turtles, sand sharks and many tropical fish. We was given a video which captured the main parts of the trip which we didn’t realise was included. The video was a nice touch and something we can always look back on and treasure forever.

The beach BBQ on Mondays is brilliant as well all you can eat with perfectly cooked meats and veggies would highly recommend!

We will definitely be coming back to Summer Island for sure in the future.
