I spent there 2 nights recently and was very happy with my stay.
Simple, clean, and welcome place. Friendly people working at the front desk.
Hotel is located just over 2 kms from Old City and Train/bus station but you can get close enough by taking tram No 11, or just have a nice walk.

Breakfast there is quiet good, the only thing I could complain about is acoustic building..You can hear people walking above you or taking shower next to your room....but is OK for 2 nights.
I think it is great value, specially for less than 20 USD bed + breakfast.
Dont think twice...make a reservation !!
cheers,.

I am sorry to report that Hotel Skanste is a place to avoid when staying in Riga.
It may be one of the cheapest hotels but is also the least pleasant.
The biggest gripe of all was that there was no heating in the rooms even though it was justified for the management to put it on. This meant I was cold when I got out of the shower and risked illness because of this! Thin blanket, I put my cardigan on the bed to keep warm, Old carpets that were rucking on the staircase, no lift I could see.
Grubby grout on shower cubicle, no plug in washbasin. We'd have happily paid a few more euros for such essentials!
Hotel is on the outskirts so you need to take number 3 or 11 bus on Valdemara Iela.
Breakfast was ok, but not cooked unless you consider a warm frankfurter and a cold boiled egg to be in this category.
A free PC and Internet service, managed to borrow a hairdryer (only two for whole hotel).
For a few euros more, book a place in the city.
BTW the National Gallery is closed for renovation, so if you are an art lover, find out when it is scheduled to be re-opened. Enjoyed the city sights, pity about the hotel. No reproach to helpful young staff there, though! Problem lies with the managment, needs to spend some money and find out what clients' needs are! Good for sports as huge centre is opposite the hotel. Fresh air as there are green spaces around. Excellent hypermarket round the corner called Prisma, wish they had one like it in UK!

Rooms look a bit tired. But bedding and towels still fresh and crisp. Rooms nice size, no cleaners faults found bud marks on the carpets and walls. Decent size. Reception staff very friendly. Good quality for price.

We went on a deal, so we were not sure of the accommodation. When we arrived we first saw the stairs, carpet was coming loose and missing in places, apart from what this looks like, it is also extremely dangerous. The bedroom had a dirty old carpet, old worn, stained mattresses on the beds with the springs literally poking through, dirty old stained furniture, one coat hanger in wardrobe, mold around shower, fridge was not working and froze everything, finally no bed side lamps. One good point, staff are friendly. Found out that there regulars are men on stag weekends ..........say no more. Go into the old part of town to book rooms, they are not that expensive.

I booked this hotel via Expedia. When I checked it, suddenly my booking was not valid, I had to take the "last room in the hotel" at a higher rate. It seems this isnt unusual. When I spoke to Expedia, they suggested this is a common occurence with this hotel, they tried to help but the hotel just saw a tourist and calculated how much they could increase the room rate.
The hotel is as poor a hotel as I ever stayed in, if you like cold rubber eggs, the breakfast is perfect, no food after 10:30 in the morning and only a local burger bar in walking distance.
There is nothing to do in the area, other than the Riga Arena across the road (which is why I was there).
If you are an avid collection of mould, dust and dead insects, this hotel is a dream, a virtual utopia.

Room Tip: Rooms on the 4th floor are best (it is a 3 floored hotel).

Wouldn't stay again even for free. This place is terrible! TERRIBLE! Not enough words to describe the conditions - the dirt, the dust, the mold, the broken furniture, the smell, those bedlinen and pillows that make you sick even thinking of sleeping with these. Breakfast….. imagine sausage and boiled egg as your only option to have breakfast. Really "nice"... And this was official hotel to accomodate Riga Open Tennis tournament participants…. such a shame!
This place must be closed for sanitary reasons. I think even cockroaches would not choose it.

This hotel has such serious health and safety issues it would be closed down if in the UK. Apart from the few staff working there who were helpful and friendly there is nothing to recommend it. Pay a little extra and find somewhere nicer and closer to town. Examples: Shower cubicle covered in mould, nasty little beds with very cheap thin mattresses and 1 coat hanger for 2 people. These are just a few of what we found and there are many more!

It is a dishonest business. In the description it says: living with animals possible. After payment of the hotel accommodation with animals reported: it is absolutely impossible! This is a clever hoax!

There is nothing wrong with this hotel, but I wouldn't necessarily recommend it either.
The room was big, with a wardrobe, fridge etc. One of the twin beds was incredibly squeaky and I get the impression that a hoover was only used on the exposed bit of carpet as there was quite a lot of dust and stuff on the floor when we moved the beds. Breakfast was fine and staff were courteous but not overly friendly.
There is nothing wrong with this place and it does not fail to deliver on anything it advertises, but don't expect to be pleasantly surprised.

Clean, bright hotel with easy walking access to the city or via bus. Spacious rooms with reasonable bathrooms and a fridge. Breakfast is not too good as it consisted of salami, cheese slices & yogurt. Some sort of fruit juice was also available. Reasonable prices overall and I would recommend this hotel for a short trip.

"If you want a quiet stay, avoid weekends which is when this hotel gets busy. The weekend we were there we had a coach load of ice hockey players from Minsk (Dynamo), Belarus! They were very quiet though, maybe because they lost to the home team, Riga!"
