The hotel is located in a quiet neighborhood near the city centre. It might not look much from the street outside, but when you enter the hotel (which is a few floors of a larger building), things start to look different. The hotel itself has a very nice interior, and the rooms are excellent both design- and function-wise. Some rooms have wired Internet access, which seems to be free. The room I'm staying in (I'm writing this review while staying at the hotel) has a good bathtub and a minibar as well, although they coud put more food/snacks and less beverages in it, in my opinion. The rates are reasonable, athough they have been raised recently its still good value for your money.

Slightly unprepossessing from the outside the Laine Hotel in Riga becomes an altogether different proposition once you have made it to the third floor Reception desk. This hotel is clean, bright, airy, friendly, well situated, and above all excellent value for money. Our room at the top of the building on the seventh floor was the "penthouse suite" but cost the equivalent of only £75 per night. The room itself was very large as was the bathroom and the balcony. The bed was a little firm for our taste but with a well-stocked minibar, satellite television and the main attractions of Riga only a short walk away we could not have chosen a better hotel in which to stay.

Riga Old Town is probably a 15 minute walk away and certainly all the main attractions are within easy walking distance. Breakfast at the Laine was a little uninspiring but eating out in Riga is so ridiculously cheap that having both lunch and dinner out was not a major expense. (It remains to be seen if prices stay the same once Latvia adopt the euro in a couple of years time)

I can highly recommend Riga as a city to visit and the Laine Hotel as a place to stay. There are plenty of more expensive hotels but the Laine has everything you need and it would certainly be our first choice on a return visit.

Good location 10 minutes away from the old town. Situated in an old building it maintains the old fashioned decor. Reception is on the 3rd floor. Staff is very friendly. Rooms are confortable and quiet. Breakfast is ok. Free wifi. Small private parking lot available. Has to be reserved. Good price / quality ratio.

We had two double rooms. Both without warm water. After six hours we got warmwater. Internet was OK, but the tv-set was from the last century. No radio. Rooms large but worn. Bathrooms were stylish. Breakfast table was good but some day there served past days sandwich (?). The service attitude was very poor. When we were checked out we had to wait our luggage for a half our because there were no one in the reception. We consider the price very high, about 400€ / 3nights. Should be a 2-star place.

We booked two standard rooms in the Laine Hotel and were allocated rooms 509 and 510,Room 510 was light , airy well decorated and carpeted and lived up to the expectations of a standard 3star bedroom. However room 509 bore no resemblance to what one would expect for 3 star accomodation in fact it would be stretching it to give any star rating. The room was reminiscent of well used student accomodation, decor was spartan, bare untreated floor boards, tired worn furniture with little or no veneer, cracks from floor to ceiling in the wallpaper in fact 4 days in this would seem like a prison sentence. To be fair the reception staff were helpfull within the constrictions of their authority .We were given, for one night only, a delux bedroom for the same price but they seemed vague as to the further 3 nights we had booked wether would would get a room comparable to room 510.As our confidence in the hotel was damaged we felt obliged to pay the extra 20lts daily for an upgrade. This hotels best asset is it's staff who were exceptional.Whilst corridors seem to have been decorated, areas of the hotel are neglected or undergowing change, however health and safety issues may be grey areas, steps upto/out to the roof terrace were unfinished with no treads or facings, architraves were missing from door frames and brickwork exposed. On that basis I would be loathe to recommend it.

The Hotel Laine at first seemed a little odd. The reception is situated on the third floor of a large building with the remainder of the hotel extending upwards. The reception area is very clean, as is the restaurant and the bar. We stayed in the rest deluxe room which, for the money is exceptional. The room has a small area with a wardrobe, followed by a generously sized bedroom in art deco style with a queen size bed. The bathroom is enormous, complete with underfloor heating, essential in winter! Excellent.

Once i got in the room everything was ok - clean refurbished and functional. But even after three days I did not get over the depressing feeling of going in and out through the falling plaster corridors and yard, up a pre-deluvian lift, to the 3rd floor reception. Breakfast was quite good, staff quite pleasant, but overall I would not consider returning for a second.
Having seen where colleagues stayed, this place is also overpriced and stuck in a dead street. Even the taxi drivers stumbled to find the hotel

After some trouble with the Hotel's online booking system (don't ever neglect calling them for confirmation) I was expecting a somewhat chaotically run property - but they redeemed themselves quickly. Reception desk staff was very friendly, competent and fluent in both English and German (probably Russian as well).
I stayed there for two periods of two nights each, in different rooms. Both rooms were registered as "Business" rooms, differing from "Standard" or "Suite" rooms mainly in size and layout. While carpeting and baths in both rooms were nothing to write home about, beds were large and comfortable, mattresses recent enough. TV sets, minibars and most furniture appeared to be about 6-7 years old, but in good shape.

The hotel apparently was opened in the early 1990s, right after the end of Soviet occupation. It is not affiliated with any of the major hotel chains, so expect some quirky details in service. Location is somewhat removed from most Riga tourist attractions, in a the back of a large Art Nouveau building in a residential street. Major attractions are not far though, between 5 and 15 minutes walking distance.
To enter you'll have to cross a courtyard, and then enter a very very small, very very slow and very very rotten elevator at your own peril. The other option is to take the narrow stairs to the third floor - this is where reception, bar, and some of the best rooms are. The next three floors are also taken up by rooms, and they seem to be getting smaller the higher you climb. Don't take anything on the 7th floor: You're going to be right under the roof , and the elevator will only take you to the 5th floor (talk about quirky details...).
As room sizes are very different, and furniture quality also seems to vary quite a bit, just ask the reception staff to get you a big and recently renovated room. The owners seem to be working on hotel renovations one step at a time - all the time.

As I usually got up relatively late I missed out on all breakfast. Dare to come there after 9.55am - and everything will have vanished completely - this is Eastern Europe after all!
That said, hotel restaurant and bar prices are very reasonable indeed. One night in one of the approx. 30 square meter (350 square feet) "Business" rooms set me back about 70 Euros - not dirt cheap but adequate. I was satisfied, the nuisances (elevator, earlybird-only breakfast) were more than balanced by a very personal and pleasant atmosphere. I might even stay there again.

Spacious & clean rooms, friendly staff, near the National Gallery & Art Nouveau streets. After about 10 different accommodations tried in Riga, this is our favorite. Breakfast is tasty with enough options.

The first thing great about Art Hotel Laine is its staff. The people are very kind and helpful. Also the hotels location is great if you are in Riga for a touristic visit. The ambiance and the concept of the hotel is astonishingly charming as well.
