Grand Hotel Kempinski Riga earns accolades for its stylish décor, with guests frequently mentioning the elegant lobby and particularly resplendent Christmas decorations. Despite some guests feeling the pinch of high costs, the attentive service, notably at breakfast and the concierge, adds to the hotel's charm. While the spa and breakfast come recommended, a few travelers have pointed out extra charges and limited access.
The hotel's meticulous cleanliness shines through, especially in the cozy rooms. Its prime Old Town location is widely celebrated, although a few guests found the air conditioning in rooms to be less than ideal.

This was the best hotel of our trip to the 3 Baltic States. We had a 3 night stay and I was sorry to leave. The location in the Old Town was very convenient for sight-seeing and walking out to restaurants for dinner. Our room was large and luxuriously appointed; we had an enormous walk-in closet with plenty of hangers and space to lay out 2 suitcases. The bathroom was also spacious with both a tub and a separate walk-in shower stall. It had pocket doors, as did the closet. There was evening maid service; she even put down linen towels beside the bed so you did not step onto the carpet in bare feet, a nice little touch you rarely see anymore. The buffet breakfast in the dining room was lavish and the waitstaff attentive (though I wish they gave us a pot of coffee instead of having to ask for a refill). We asked for a restaurant recommendation from the concierge one night and he was quite helpful, calling several restaurants and finally finding one that had an opening and booking it for us.

This is a much overdue review concerning our one night stay at this opulent, well located hotel. We had originally booked for several nights but unfortunately we both did not sleep at all on our first (and only) night in the beautiful opera facing room due to insufficient air conditioning. It was hot and humid both outside and especially within the room itself.
We called for assistance in making the huge room more comfortable and were told there was nothing they could do? Desperate, we resorted to sleeping tablets which also didn’t help!
The breakfast we paid for was delicious. Even after all this time I recall the superb Hollandaise sauce with perfect poached eggs.
As the issue of air conditioning could not be resolved, we decided to cancel remainder of our reservation. A cool, comfortable room and decent sleep is mandatory in all hotels - especially a 5 star one. Hopefully our bad experience was an aberration.
We still give the hotel a very good rating for the lavish decor, huge bedroom, great location, views and superb breakfast. The understanding of the manager was much appreciated when we explained our dismay at our most uncomfortable night and reason for leaving. She graciously refunded the cost of the sleepless night.
There is excellent leadership at this special hotel. However we do recommend enquiring about the effectiveness of the air conditioning in advance of warm weather, to ensure that the problem we endured has been long since resolved.

450€ for 1 night and the level of the hotel is not comparable to Hiltons etc. We had high expectations this being oir first stay in a Kempinski, but were very disappointed.
First the positives. The location is great, right in the centre. The bed was comfortable. The breakfast was very very good, especially the ladies working there were the friendliest and nicest people!!
Then the negatives.
The reception lady who signed us in was ok friendly, but as I later came to her to ask about the restaurant on property, I saw that everyone else checking in were provided with welcome drinks. We even had a junior suite reserved so could not be due to our cheap room.
We had dinner at the rooftop restaurants, there were 2 people addition to us eating, but still had to wait for 50 minutes to have our main course (we did no even order starters).
There were only 2 small bottles of water at our night tables so I called the reception to have a few more to wash teeth and have a drink. Never have I before had an experience where a so called 5 star hotel charges for still water. It cost us something like 7€ per bottle (21€ altogether). Quite an expensive teeth brushing. I emailed them afterwards but they kept to their standards stating that only 2 bottles are free per night. SO WATCH OUT!
The room was a bit outdated, it was clean but needs new furniture quite soon.
All in all there are much better options in Riga money wice to choose. Spend your luxury hotel budget somewhere else where you get real value for the money.

very disappointing experience. At the time of booking, I specifically requested that the room temperature be set to 17°C, as I am very sensitive to heat and need a cooler environment to sleep well. However, upon arrival, I found the room was set at 20°C, and despite my efforts, I could not get the temperature lowered.
I contacted the front desk multiple times during my stay, but they informed me that it wasn’t possible to reduce the temperature below 20°C. After my stay, I reached out to hotel management, only to be told that due to unspecified EU regulations, they are unable to lower the temperature below 20°C. This explanation is completely unacceptable, especially considering that all health guidelines, including those from the Sleep Foundation and the World Health Organization, recommend sleeping in a room between 16°C and 19°C for optimal rest.
As a result, I was uncomfortable throughout my stay and had a terrible time trying to sleep. This experience has left me with a very negative impression of Kempinski hotels, and I will not be staying at this hotel or any other Kempinski property again.

Twas a Brilliant and Grand Experience staying at the Grand Hotel Kempinski in Riga, Latvia. The staff were all top notch and I had the best Massage of my life in their spa. The Sauna, Cold Plunge, and Pool were very relaxing after a long plane ride. The Lobby was like something out of a Fairytale and harks back to the days of Opulence when Diplomats and Royalty would stay here. I think they probably still do.
One fun fact is there is no 2nd floor on the Elevator switchboard due to the fact that used to be the floor where the KGB occupied to spy on all visiting guests.
This might sound crazy, but no joking, The Kempinski has the best Tiramisu that I have ever had and I have had it a lot. It was the creamiest and most decadent thing i have ever tasted. I had to order it twice with room service.
My Walk in closet was the size of a small apartment in Japan. They also have a wonderful Laundry service that washed and dry cleaned everything I needed to make my trip easier.
I had a wonderful view of the Opera house and city from my room. I was also there during the Summer Solstice, so it stayed pretty much light most of the night, the blackout curtains made it extra easy to sleep.
The Staff at the front desk went above and beyond the call of duty. They helped me book my bus ticket to Tallinn and gave me some great recommendations on restaurants and local haunts where they would go.
Also if you plan on staying here in Riga you should go to the site Tours by Locals and Contact Emils D. He really made my Latvian experience one I will not soon forget. We did Stand Up Paddle Boarding on the Kemeri Bog to bring in the First Sun of the Summer Solstice, then we attended the Concert of Raimonds Pauls ( the national treasure and accomplished pianist/composer) near the Baltic sea in Jurmala, then we went to Bauska to have a home cooked lunch from his parents garden near a castle that was right out of the Princess Bride.
Latvia is Amazing and I shall return Sooner than later.

Dear K8558WRmattd, Thank you kindly for writing such detailed review about your recent visit with us. We are thrilled to read your experience in our Hotel and Latvia is one you will remember. We are pleased to hear that you enjoyed the services, laundry, Spa and also our delicious Tiramisu. Indeed our Hotel has rich history as it first opened its doors in 1878 to guests. It was also a first Hotel in Riga that had telephone and electric light. As you mentioned the Hotel is next door to Latvia's National Opera house with beautiful park that must be visited. We have shared your praise with our colleagues and we are hoping you can visit our Hotel and beautiful Latvia in the nearest future. Kind Regards, Sabine Laicane Training and Quality Manager

Great facilities and rooms and staff were excellent . The convenience and location of the hotel on the edge of Old Town , the canal and park , and the Opera House , for a tourist/visitor cannot overstated. When you book you will be asked if you want to add breakfast to your room rate —let me tell you that if you do not take the breakfast option , you will be missing out on great food , atmosphere —and sparking wine !

This is probably the best hotel in Riga in terms of a full service property. It is centrally located by the opera house and the central city park. My diplomatic suite was as good as it needed to be, and I had no complaints about it. Hotel is strong on its facilities; its gym is well stocked (but no foam rollers), and it has a nice pool and sauna/steam area (but the pool and spa don't open till 9am which I found inconvenient). Hotel has a machine to spin dry bathing suits. Breakfast was decent with a nice buffet and a good mix of items including healthy ones. Hotel elevators are slow and it can be a pain if you are on a high floor. That was my main pain point here. Also, dinner choices here can be limited. There is a rooftop restaurant but there is no cooked fish item except for fried fish and chips. I couldn't use up more than half of my 100 euro food credit and wound up eating outside the second night. 5 minutes walk away is Stockmann's department store which has a fantastic food hall, by the way. I didn't particularly feel the desire to walk around outside at night here. One other point; the hotel's concierge was poorly trained and didn't really know the city. He couldn't answer basic questions about how to get around and where things were. This property is fine but as a Kempinski it could do some things better to make it deserve a rating of excellent.

Everything is great at the hotel. It's fresh and clean. The staff is very helpful. Since we were vacationing with a 10-month-old baby, it was important to adapt to his sleep. Karina at the reception helped us with this, checking us in early and arranging a late check-out. Thank you very much for this! She also upgraded our room, since ours was not ready yet. Very nice. The room included not only a crib for the baby, but also bathroom cosmetics, a bathrobe and slippers. This is cute )))) The spa was wonderful, not many people, pleasant, quiet atmosphere. The water and air temperature is +31, this is not the case in every pool. There are 4 saunas of different temperatures. The only negative was the room service food, it made my stomach hurt, but maybe that was a coincidence. Breakfast was delicious and varied. We went to the lobby bar for dessert, the menu is not large, but everything is delicious. Our room was on the 5th floor with a view of the opera and old Riga - I think this is the best location :) We dream of coming back again!

Our trip was planned for two nights on the occasion of a birthday. The location of the hotel is good, the rooms are up to the standard of a five star hotel. One of the reasons we chose the Kempinski in Riga for our stay was that we wanted a hotel at the beginning of February that offered us the option of a sophisticated spa. We were traveling with our seven-year-old daughter. Unfortunately, we were not informed before booking that there are considerable restrictions on children using the spa. For example, children are only allowed between 10:00 am and 4;00 pm. Unfortunately, we were informed of this one day before arrival. Cancellation was no longer possible at this time. Although our daughter behaved very quietly and didn't disturb anyone, we were removed from the spa area after 4pm in a very unfriendly manner. The manager of the spa area, Ingrida Srama, was unfortunately not very friendly. In addition, our older son, who is currently in Riga, visited us in the spa area for 1 hour on Sunday afternoon. He didn't use the pool or sauna and yet, to our surprise, we were charged €65 for his "stay" in the spa at checkout. When we raised this issue, they were unfortunately once again very rude and unfriendly. In summary, it can be said that the hotel is probably struggling to get its money's worth. In addition, the spa area is mostly frequented by external guests who do not actually stay in the hotel. Now that's not nice either. Overall, we were not satisfied, especially since it was a birthday stay, and we cannot recommend the hotel. The spa manager Ingrida Srama deserves a particularly negative mention. If you come to Riga, you'd better book another hotel.
