This place is unreal!

We were picked up at the airport by two knowledgeable guides who shared their insights right until we reached the property.

At the entrance, we had the staff waiting for us all smiles which felt like homecoming to us.
Stepped in and were blown away by the vast expanse of the jungle surrounding the property.
I am a sucker for clean lines and themed decor and looking around the halls made my heart sing.
Checkin was seamless with a much needed cold cocktail.Every aspect of the property/room/itinerary was explained in detail.

Our first game drive was an experience we will never ever ever forget. A coffee & wine bar in the middle of a jungle- you guys are the best! The guide and tracker made every game drive better than the previous one and we managed to spot the big 5 in just 3 game drives. Woot!

I can't even begin to describe the meals we had. From the snacks to dinner to breakfast - some of the best meals we have ever had. The pickle fish, pork belly, malva pudding and milk tart were hands down the best we have/will ever had. The fish was so good that my husband who usually isnt a fish fan, had it every opportunity he got.

Brownie points for thoughtfulness
1. The beautiful setup by the fire place for our Anniversary dinner. So special
2. My husband was suffering from sore throat and his go to drink was hot water with lemon and honey. Everyone remembered it and after each meal they gave us fresh cut lemons to take back to the room without even asking.
3. Solomon our tracker always double checked our evening drink preference during the morning game drive. One day we skipped the morning drive. It was understood that since he didnt get a chance to ask nor was he sure if we will join the evening round, he won't carry extra stuff. But our minds were blown when he had both white wine and beer for us that evening.

As this was our first visit to Karongwe Game Reserve, what a pleasant surprise. Our first stop was at Becks Safari Lodge. All staff were extremely friendly, professional and went out of their way to ensure that our every requirement was met. Rooms are large, comfortable and well appointed and offer views of either the river or the Drakensburg Escarpment. What can be said about the food - prepare to put on weight as every meal was excellent and offered a wide variety to choose from. Our ranger Sondy and tracker Michael were very polite and knowledgeable, and ensured that the vehicle was clean, eats were available (all individually provided due to Covid) and the best possible sightings were seen.
If you need to relax and enjoy wildlife, then this lodge is definitely recommended.

For my husband’s birthday we booked into Beck’s Safari Lodge. What a beautiful place. We’ve been thoroughly spoiled by everyone from the booking and reservations team to the security guard who walks you to your room at night (this is big five country after all). We got a call midday on the day we were traveling by road from Johannesburg to enquire what time we would be arriving so that they would be ready for us. from the moment they met us on the car park to the moment they waved us goodbye 4 days later we were treated like royalty. The food and drinks are fantastic and so much food! Personal chats with the chefs who come to your table to make sure you’re happy. A bar man who has a way different understanding of single and double than we did left us happy and content. The game drives with Nathan and Freddie were amazing. Such knowledge to share not only of the big five but to the tiniest flower, insect and frog. Such passion for their work. Freddie is the bravest man I’ve ever met, riding point and staring down a full grown Cape buffalo- wow I was squirming in the back of the safari land rover, but there was no need to be afraid, Nathan had it all under control and never once put us in danger. Our room was immaculate and luxurious with a stunning view. Sleeping under the mosquito net listening to the sounds of the African bush. What more could you need?
You cannot leave Africa- she is always with you. There inside your head. Her rivers run in currents in the swirl of your thumb prints, her drumbeats counting time to your pulse. Her shoreline a silhouette of your soul and her wild spaces the beating of your heart. No matter where and how far you travel a little piece of Africa will always be in you. Come home soon.

On arrival, we were met by our Ranger Joe (Jolyon), tracker Lewis and Duty Manager Cathleen – a wonderful warm friendly welcome from all of them!

We were then brought welcome drinks & the forms to fill in by Sammy who was in turn wonderful, answered all our questions and generally just a super guy to chat to. After which we were taken to our room - No 1 – what a stunning room with a fantastic view over the dry riverbed. Really beautifully laid out and decorated!

After unpacking, freshening up, we went for a light lunch on the deck. The food was truly amazing, from start to finish, this must truly be a highlight of this lodge!!

Then off on a game drive – Joe & Lewis really did do everything they could to find us wonderful sightings. Which under the current circumstances was a little difficult as their other lodges had not opened and there was little activity from outside lodges so not a lot of radio contact or help from other rangers! We saw 4 of the Big 5 , the ever-elusive leopards evaded us, but we did see their new pack of 3 wild dogs & we saw the mom & cub cheetah that were in the enclosed boma awaiting release.

The bird life in camp is really amazing & kept me busy photographing some amazing birds between drives, meals etc!

The camp itself is beautifully located and immaculately maintained; the interiors are decorated too beautifully & very thoughtfully. We had one day where the power was knocked out completely for about 10 hours and the way they set up the dining room that night by candlelight was truly exquisite! Fortunately, the lights came back on just after dinner ended, to everyone’s relief as it was stifling! That would be my only negative is that they do not have any backup generators for the camp which in these times I would think essential.

On my birthday (check-out day) the Duty Manageress Anita (from one of their closed camps) insisted on baking a cake for me, so a first, we all had a piece of cake with breakfast …….not too sure about that one, but t it was delicious & the balance was given to the staff 😊

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay – the exterior architecture is a bit modern for our taste, but that was forgotten by the interiors, the really amazing staff & the truly delicious meals!

Thanks must go to all the staff who were exceptional – Joe, Lewis, Cathleen, Sammy, Matome, Maria, Liza, Richard, Phindi, Timothy, Motsepo, Amy, Tara and of course Anita!!

(Apologies to all for my very delayed review!)

A very high level of quality for everything: staff members are welcoming and smilling. The luxurious tent-like suites are amasing: very large, very confortable and very well equipped. The food served is very tasty and meals are varied and refined. The safari games were awesome.

My husband and I spent 3 nights at Becks Safari Lodge on the Karongwe game reserve. We could not fault the service, ammenities, food and most importantly the attention to detail as regards Covid-19 protocol.
Our Safari guide Nathan was an absolute savant when it came to knowledge of African animals, birds and plants. His knowledge and enthusiasm was one of the highlights of each Safari. I must also mention the tracker Johannes who bravely sat on the seat attached to the front bumper bar of the game viewing vehicle. His eagle eyes at spotting the most obscure tracks were nothing short of amazing.

The experience at Becks Safari Lodge totally exceeded our expectations. Lizel, Jolandi and the rest of the staff at the Lodge made our stay beyond confortable and were always on every detail, not to mention the delicious food and the beautiful swimming pool that made quite a difference on our hot afternoons in between drives. And of course, Freddy and Rifos that were our tracker and ranger in all our game drives, not only took us to see the big 5 but also taught us and shared so much about the great ecosystem of the savanna and every living thing inside. There is so much more to see and learn than just the big 5. We hope we have the chance to come back. Thank you!

My husband and I stayed at Beck’s late May and had an extraordinary time. We were made to feel welcomed and Francois ensured that all of our needs cared for. There were gluten free options at meal time. The rooms are large and luxuriously appointed and had plenty of water and snacks. The meals exquisitely presented but the food was the only negative. It was okay, but did not meet the level of this establishment. Sunde and Michael helped us find the big 5 in Karongwe with lots of lion, and even cheetah and leopard sightings. The game drives were excellent and the animals plentiful but the vehicles were packed with 10 people. We even had plenty of animal sightings from our room including nyala, wart hogs, giraffes, zebra, vervet monkeys, kudu, and cape buffalo, there is an electric fence to keep the animals from getting into your rooms but the nyala liked to jump over to say hello. All tolled this was an excellent experience and we enjoyed our stay at Beck’s immensely.

We were in a group of 14 people and each couple had their own beautifully appointed "cabin". Each had a large veranda which was exceptional for watching wildlife. The food was truly remarkable, delicious and plentiful. We had 2 game drives each day, one morning (0530) and one afternoon (1600). Our guide and tracker were knowledgeable, fun and determined to maximize our viewing of every possible animal; their perseverance paid off and we were able to see leopards on the last 2 game drives. The staff were all so very friendly and welcoming. And the pool was refreshing between game drives. One of the best places I've ever stayed.
