The Fox and Hounds Hotel is a handsome former 17th Century coaching inn that dominates the Green in the picturesque Rutland village of Exton. The building oozes character, with a number of fireplaces for cosy winter evenings and a pretty garden for lazy summer days. Privately owned, you can be assured of a warm welcome, with every amenity to make your stay a pleasurable one. The entire building has benefited from a major refurbishment and now offers four boutique hotel luxury rooms. All rooms are ensuite, are individually decorated, and come with broadband internet, Netflix, digital free view, complimentary White Company toiletries, Egyptian cotton linen & bathrobes in the bathrooms, and Espresso coffee and tea making machine. There is also free parking. Dining at the Fox and Hounds 2 AA Rosette restaurant is a treat. We have recently been awarded a place in the Good Food Guide, (the Waitrose UK's Best Restaurants book). We offer some exceptional seasonal menus, a weekly Prix Fixe lunch menu, and a number of British Classics. We also offer various weekly specials, such as our Tuesday Steak Night (see our Offers & Events page for details). The bar menu offers a quirky take on the British classics, from share platters to sandwiches. For more formal dining, the restaurant and deck offers Modern European inspired dishes. On Sundays, a traditional menu is served from noon.

A perfect hotel for our first visit to Rutland Water. Our room for our two four legged companions was just ideal and we and the dogs were made to feel very welcome. We were most impressed with the walks from the door for the dogs and they were definitely an added bonus. Food was delicious.

We arrived to a warm welcome , the hotel is very tastefully decorated and has real character. Our room was quirky and again tasteful with a lot of thought put into it , furnished with all the extras you would expect for the price , our bed was quite soft but then I’m quite fussy on beds !!
The bar prices are a bit expensive but you are not sat in Wetherspoons and the breakfast was cooked to order and really well presented and tasty.
All in all a lovely treat and good service and very welcoming , they are working hard in these tough times and it shows !!

Called into this quiet pub on our cycle route which is set in a lovely village.

The welcoming was a little strange, it was like we were putting the 2 gentleman working there out there way to serve us!!

Eat of the lunchtime menu which the food was lovely and sat in the large beer garden at the rear of the pub.

Food and beer was good, service was great saying there were only 3 tables outside being used, toilets and sanitise stations up to a good standard but just watch out for the service charge on your bill (which I don’t usually mind if the service was good)

Wouldn’t return to the pub as there were better ones on our route around Rutland

I remembered this place so fondly from 10 or so years ago.

We booked for Sunday lunch September '24 and it was truly terrible. Aunt Bessie Yorkshire Puddings, dried up Kleftico, small portions, over-priced (even without factoring in the standard of the food) I'm bewildered at the other reviews. The staff were unfriendly; Nobody bothered to ask how everything was with our meals. I think I know the reason why.

Worst meal I've had in a while. We definitely won't be returning.

It is very rare that I leave a review for somewhere I have been and only generally if I have received either amazing or shocking service... unfortunately this falls into the later category. My wife and I along with 3 other couples booked a table after a Wedding ceremony at nearby Fort Henry. The landlord whom this poor review is centred around was completely uninterested in telling us what Gins he served but merely gestured with a nod of his head to the Gins on the back wall of the bar whilst chewing gum with his mouth open. When we all took a seat on the large sofa at the back of the pub we then had to ask for him to turn the lights on which was done in a manner that indicated that this was an inconvenience to him. When you have just paid over £15 for a pint & a single G&T I don't think having the lights switched on to see it is too much to ask. This level of poor service continued into the evening with food being slammed onto the table without a word but still lots more open mouth gum chewing. The service was more reminiscent of a greasy spoon cafe than high-end pub dining prices. The food was ok, but more in keeping with Wetherspoons rather than the price would suggest. I must say that the lady (who may have been the landlords wife) who also served us was nice and it was evident she was trying her best. Nonetheless we won't be visiting here again any time soon. Such a shame as the venue is lovely and previously had a good reputation.

Wow, what a lovely place, from the welcome to the time we left it was brilliant. The room was lovely and the curtains in the room are an absolute delight. Possibly the best bread and butter in the area and the warmth in the pub from the locals was so nice, one chap, I recall even poured me a drink while the hard working landlord was rushed off his feet. I've booked up again.
Thanks

We booked for Sunday lunch and were made to feel really welcome. It’s the perfect place to catch up with friends in a lovely setting. The Sunday roast and fish and chips were all beautifully cooked and presented. Great choices on the menu, lovely puddings and all very reasonably priced. We’ll be back and thanks for a lovely lunch.

Booked for Sunday lunch as it was our 46th wedding anniversary. The rear carpark was un-kept not welcoming at all, the only entrance we saw was at the front of the building. We were led to a very small table against a pillar amongst seating for the bar, not what we were expecting at all. We ordered roast beef and all the trimmings, while we were waiting the bar fill up wan was noisy. The hotel owners should make up their mind as to whether this is a hotel, bar or restaurant, and not all three. The hotel website claims that the food is home-made however, the Yorkshire pudding was a cooked frozen pudding, the stuffing was from a packet and the beef was tough. Very limited variety of vegetables with only ¼ of a roast potato, all served on a non-traditional plate. The quality of food and service did not reflect in the price we paid, overpriced. Very expensive glass of wine. We will not return to the Fox & Hounds, as there are better establishment found in surrounding villages.

Absolutely delightful. We were here for a pre Christmas treat with my stepson and his wife. They had stopped here before but it was our first time. We arrived at noon and were fortunate in that our rooms were ready and we were able to check in early. We were in room 2 which was absolutely gorgeous with a huge beautiful bathroom. Decorated vintage and quirky with fabulous attention to detail (including a box of ladies requisites which I thought was a nice touch). The bed was extremely comfortable. Room 3 was equally as lovely. We had a coffee and a glühwein (Danish style) before heading into town for the afternoon. We headed back to the hotel for pre dinner drinks and dinner. We opted for the festive menu and all three courses were delicious and freshly prepared. (A couple of reviews here compared the food to Wetherspoons - trust me, unless Wetherspoons has improved considerably in recent years I can assure you that it is nothing like that - I am very fussy about where I eat). Service was amazing the landlady and her staff were extremely helpful and polite and really couldn't do enough for us and, from what I could tell, other guests that were there too. It was beautifully decorated for the Festive season with lovely fires burning.

Hoping to return again when the weather is warmer.

A characterful old pub with a little modern twist, nestled in amongst a pretty village with thatched cottages opposite and a green stretching in front .
After a long drive , a very warm welcome awaited from the new owners Christina & Simon .

I spent a very cosy night there in a very clean and charmingly decorated bedroom. The bed was comfortable, warm and luxurious within a spacious room with tv, tea, coffee , plenty of wardrobe space and even a small sofa to laze on !

This led onto a beautiful en suite bathroom, a classic bath or modern rain shower awaited with attention to the smallest detail .
Even on a dreary February day, the garden beckoned with the ivory wrought iron tables & chairs , red parasols and round thatched bar. Silhouettes of Summer filled my mind as I looked out of the window I was suddenly aware of pretty twinkling lights illuminating some of the apple trees. Time for dinner....

A very good menu with a great choice to suit most palates. It didn’t disappoint. Each dish was cooked to perfection and Imaginatively presented . I could not fault the wine recommended by Simon to match my choice. The wait between courses was spot on .

Then for a night cap from the well stocked bar !

A mouthwatering breakfast was served the next morning were I was greeted once again by the warm and friendly couple who were only too happy to oblige to my needs.

I can’t wait to return !
