Villa Gjeçaj is a gem located in the heart of Thethi National Park, famous for its beauty, only 250 meters from the village center. Amongst the peace and tranquility of the surroundings, the fresh air, and pristine beauty where nature reveals its stunning elegance, you have the chance to enjoy a traditional kitchen with homemade food and comfortable rooms to embrace yourself. We are implementing a few reconstructions to the building with a chalet style with five contemporary furnished rooms. Most rooms feature a balcony with a valley view. Double and junior suite rooms suitable for couples or small families with modern farmhouse decor. The rooms feature plenty of natural materials and wood, as well as breathtaking views of the valley, of the nearby mountains, and with the river’s sound in the background.

My hiking friend and I arrived at Villa Gjacaj after a long day hiking over the pass from Valbona. We were welcomed with open arms by the proprietors and the facilities were far beyond out expectations. After major remodel, this place sparkles with special touches, and so much care has been put into little details. After the hike, were mainly happy with the soft beds, warm showers, super friendly staff, but there is so much more. This hotel is very family friendly, and with the kids home from school for the summer, there were little ones running about, filling the air with laughter. Food was amazing, simple Albanian fare with hyper-local ingredients (the guesthouse has its own farm + cow + chickens, so fresh milk, cheese eggs and veggies). The cook, Ms. Besa, makes it all...fresh wheat bread read, crepes, Albanian fry br3ad, spanokopi, salads, pilaf...so good. We spent 2 nights and could easily spend more. Stay here again? Absolutely!! Views of the mountains and stars were also incredible.

Very great experience. My 3 friends and me did the hike from Valbonë to Teth and the owner Aida took care of all our reservations from the airport transportation to Valbonë including the ferry tour, the guide tour for the hike and both our guest house in Valbonë and Teth. Food was included. Great local food, very good and the wine is cheap but good. Everyone was so warm and welcoming. I recommend this to anyone

This country is literally the last frontier of Europe. Forty years of enforced solitary confinement by Enver Hoxha followed by another fifteen years of anarchy has germinated an almost bizarre mix of the 21st century and the 19th century and you never really know which you will encounter next.

Theth and the Villa G are perfect examples. Let's start with getting there. You will need a high clearance vehicle like an SUV ( Land Rovers seem to be the preferred choice although you can make it in a Dacia), but a high van or an old Russian truck will work too. Then you will need to make sure the main road is "open" or passable for your 3 hour journey - it is only paved to the top of the mountain and after that, well, calling it a navigable path is more accurate than "road." Whatever you do Do Not take the "road" from Shkodra - after 6 hours on that donkey trail, you will count yourself lucky to be alive.

After you get there, you will find yourself in one of the most secluded but beautiful places ever, a pastoral valley largely unchanged for hundreds of years surrounded by magnificent Alps.

There several "guest houses" in Theth and the Villa G is probably the best. The lady in traditional garb who sort of runs the place speaks only a word or two of anything other than Albanian but then, why does she need to?

My room was in the new building with private bath. Nice new furnishings but no amenities other than a bottle of what looked like dishwashing detergent in the shower. No complaints here for this 30 Euro room. My guide was in the main shared bath house at 20 Euros. He was fine with this until on the second night he woke up to see his bedmate was a scorpion - this was somewhat unnerving even though he was not stung.

There was lots of food for breakfast, mostly sheep cheese, jam, bread and stuff that looked like yogurt. Good coffee and the best tea I ever had. Dinner cost 7 Euro without the Albanian red wine and likewise included some mysterious foods but on one occasion, really good ham.

Everything you eat here is grown here. There is only very sporadic cell phone service. There is no internet. It is as remote and unspoiled a place as I have seen outside of Alaska.

You had better get there soon. They are talking about paving the rest of the road and when they do, the entire character of the valley will be gone. Try to score a room in the new private bath building - it is probably more scorpion proof. Happy Trails.

you feel the heavy atmosphere since the moment you came in. the owners were angry all the time and not letting you the feeling that you are welcome or that you are paying for the stay. the nature is beautiful but a pity that was ruined by the depressed faces. not the best choice we did for our visit in this place

Response from Gjecaj AL, Owner at Villa Gjecaj

Dear Nadia, forgive me that I do not remember your case. I am really sorry you had this perception, even though we have strong reasons and nothing personal. I am the kind of person who even if there is a fire in the kitchen will come outside smiling, but during this month we had huge problems with electricity/ energy which conditioned us a lot about the service quality. I mean with the possibility to cook or to have hot water in the shower, to see in the evening or to maintain cool the drinks or the food in the fridge. Even though we are investing a lot year by year we are still conditioned. You may say this is something not at your interest, but we care to have the possibility of a various menu (vegetarian or not) and warm cooked during each day. Sorry again if you had this perception and in order not to have misunderstandings, I always try to explain the reasons to our guesthouse guests and not only. Always when I have a few minutes time try to chat with people letting them know about the beautiful area and the challenges we have to face day by day in order for you to have a great time during your stay.

We arrieved there arou d 22 hrs and they served us an expensive tastless diner. Then they made us wait for 30 minutesto show us our room because the staff was chating and smoking cigarettes. When we got there there were big spiders and all kind of bugs all around the room. There was a waching machine outside the room and it was still on at midnight. It was so loud we couldn t sleep. We had a room eith a shower but there was no shower. After a awfull night we had a disapointing breakfast. They charged us 10 eur for bred and honey and a smal goat chees. And the girl was all about getting our money as fast as possible and let us leave. The view was nice and the owner was nake an effort to smile, but it was obviously fake. Worst stop in albania.

Hello dear writer, I have to explain some things about your review. The accommodation you explain is not Villa Gjecaj. If I have understood who you must be, than you didn't sleep at Villa Gjecaj but nearby in the neighborhood. You came late by night and I assisted you by phone to help with indications. We served you dinner even though after 22.00h and I explain that you have to wait that my staff finish work you accompany you at the other house. Anyway I free them before so you dont have to wait!! Even though you sleep at the other guesthouse you could have the dinner and breakfast at our place. About the price (?!) I dont understand what you are talking about?! our breakfast do NOT cost 10 euro. It contain: honey, jam, butter, cheese, milk and mountain tea. all this cost 3 eur, or sleep and breakfast can be 10 euro. Dinner cost 7 euro per person and is a fix menu: soup, salad, cheese, pie, and meat with patatoes (or alternative). Everything is homemade in our garden and fresh cooked. So, for this I believe that you are not fare with us when you speak about the dinner or breakfast. We serve dinner from 19.30h, so maybe at 22.00 is not so hot as at 20.00!! If you are someone else than I have to say that this is a fake comment/review.

I recently completed the Valbona - Theth hike and this was the first guesthouse I encountered. It turned out to be a great find for a set of weary legs. The house is superbly located just off the trail overlooking the village of Theth. The food was delicious. Traditional Albanian cuisine of which nearly all ingredients come from Theth - the homemade fig jam & honey was especially delicious. The rooms however were a little bare but all in all a great find.

We chose this guesthouse on a recommendation for our hike from Valbona. Given that Theth is extremely isolated, and uninhabited for the winter months : this guesthouse is spectacular. It is spotless with excellent food. It is true that Lule speaks no English and some confusion is possible. It pays to remember that Theth is about as remote as it gets in Albania (or anywhere), and the service of this guesthouse is far beyond what is available in most other countries. The food is traditional Albanian, and there is lots of it.

After walking through Theth for a day there is no doubt this is the best accommodation. (There is a substantial amount of substandard accommodation.)

I've been in this guesthouse twice and it's just an amazing place to have a rest after some hiking ! Food is delicious, rooms are very clean, and most important ... you'll experience an unprecedented hospitality. I also want to emphasize the beauty of the village. There is a nice waterfall, a water spring, a canyon and so on ...
If you don't have your own transportation, Petrit can arrange transport from tirana ( or Shkodra ), its cheap ( 1000 LEK / person for a 4h ride ) and well organised !
In a nutshell, i'll go back !!

Very DISSAPOINTED!!! We arrived 1hour late because our car had a problem.the rooms were not ready and we had to put our bags in the hall.the owner (the old lady) said unfriendly that she waited us 1hour earlier.however we waited for nearly an hour for lunch which was poor.the cheese smelled and the liver was uncooked.at 5 our rooms were cleaned so we could enter.we order dinner at 8 and by 9 we only had the appetizer.she brought plates only when we asked her.we wait for 30mi for the meat that was unfreshed.and by 10 we were tired to wait for fries that never arrived.our rooms were cold because they turned off the boiles system and didn't bother even though we told them.breakfast was somehow good.Anyway we god all sick by the food.the hospitality was terrible.we felt like we were there by force. CHOOSE ANOTHER PLACE TO STAY!!

Hello dear writer... Your same comment in all our socialmedia or non, make us believe that you are not a guest but a competitor from Thethi. The details you describe are NOT true at all and the place you describe is not ours. Other people who have visited us this year can prove the opposite.

We had pre-booked Villa Gjecaj by email, to be sure of accommodation in case of late arrival at the end of our long walk in from Vusanje and it proved to be perfectly sited on that side of Theth village centre and also perfect for our onwards trek into Valbona the following morning. Two practical benefits for any walkers.
It seems that things are developing fast hereabouts and what we found was not a humble traditional farmhouse but a well-geared guesthouse operation (something like a gite in France), but which retained a nice, local family-run feel about it.
They have obviously been doing this for a while, but they have not grown cynical.
It turned out that the lady in charge had not been advised of our pre-booking but we were given a three bed room, simple but clean and comfortable (except for some boozy laughter outside into the late hours and some dire plumbing in the ensuite bathroom).
We enjoyed our evening meal (lamb chops etc) in the convivial dining room.
The mother (I guess) of the family made up our bill the same evening so we could make an early start and then also got up early just to make us a coffee and to lay out a picnic takeaway. A very nice lady.
So, all in all, we liked Villa Gjecaj and would recommend it to any passers by.
Despite the plumbing. That will no doubt be fixed by now.
Denis and John and Liam.
