Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I stayed here for a night on my way up north. It's an old building full of character. I booked a dorm room but was upgraded to a single with shared bathroom. There was no one else staying there. Room temperature was good, it was quiet, there's kitchen facilities and a bar. I think there were people in the bar when I arrived but you couldn't hear them upstairs. Wifi works well. I was a bit surprised they did not take Eftpos and ended up having to pay by bank transfer as I don't carry cash.

Really friendly staff and a fantastic warm atmosphere. The pool tables and jukebox were free during the day. We weren't after anything flash and just came for some drinks, chips and a comfortable place to have a yarn and read a book. It was great.

I was with a family birthday dinner on Saturday night,20 of us. Though the food was OK even good the lack of serving staff was very poor. When you accept a booking of 20 you need to increase your staff to cope with all the orders.
One of our tables had to wait over an hour to have there order taken and then 3/4 of another hour to get there food, very poor. Our waitress took one tables orders one table at a time and as we were the first table to order she then didn't take the other tables orders until we had gotten our first course and nearly our second course.
I have worked in the service industry for over 20 years and know this is not the way to deal with a large party of people, not sure where or if any waiting training has been done with the staff. This needs to improve if your going to take large group booking and for them not to have to wait 1 1/2 hours to get there order taken or even any food. More waiting staff is needed and training on service also.
Nearly forgot to mention, that when I went to pay the prices I was charged differed to the ones on our blackboard menu we had ordered from. I was over charged and asked for a refund. This is simple restaurant practice, get your prices right. Staff training is quickly needed.

Thought we would try somewhere local that we hadn't been to before. The Manakau Hotel is a lovely looking hotel and we always meant to try it. It was a hot night so we sat in the covered in area between the inside and the garden. It could have been a nice atmosphere but was spoilt by a dirty floor and windows and dried leaves lying around. My partner ordered the Steak and chips and I ordered the Roast of the day which was pork. The roast was average, not sure if the meat was cooked on the premises but tasted like the Deli bought meat. My partner had a good steak but the chips were hard, overdone and had been cooked in fishy tasting oil so he wasn't able to eat them. The waitress was really nice, apologised about the fishy oil but didn't offer any replacement or compensation of any sort. Not somewhere we will be going back to.

Stepped back in time: lovely old hotel in need of some love & attention. The Hotel Inspector would do wonders. Friendly bar staff but think it was the waitress 1st night! Room for improvement Food ok!

A group of around 20 of us went to the Manakau Hotel for dinner a recent Saturday night. We used the main dining room. Menu was varied and reminiscent of the 1970s. Prawn cocktail, Fried Camembert, etc. Food all good and reasonably priced. Cold however, as heaters just could not cope with the cold evening.

This hotel is not your 3 or even 4 star, crisp linen, fully catered and glorious hotel. This is a true local New Zealand hotel. The staff are friendly, as are the locals (well, most are... there's always one).... and if you treat everyone well then they most certainly will do the same for you.
The hotel has been renovated in recent years. But remember, its an old hotel, which means the rooms are not set up as our modern day expectations say they should be. You will have to share a bathroom / toilet (I didn't see any ensuite rooms).... but the price reflects this. And the rooms are good quality, nicely decorated... and the location is perfect for travellers... just off the main road, and quiet. Most rooms overlook the lovely gardens.
We highly recommend this hotel..
