Kapawi is one of the most remote, ecologically responsible and culturally sensitive ecolodges in the world. Your visit helps the Achuar people in their work to preserve their nearly two million acres of pristine rainforest in the heart of the Ecuadorian Amazon. Kapawi Ecolodge & Reserve is located in one of the most remote and well protected parts of the Ecuadorian Amazon. Deep in the nearly two million acres of the Achuar people’s territory, Kapawi is accessible only by air—flying in small planes over an unbroken green expanse of rainforest. Kapawi Ecolodge and ReserveIn addition to consistently receiving high praise for its gracious hospitality, creature comforts, excellent cuisine, and complete menu of activities, Kapawi is also an award winning Ecolodge noted for its ecological design and sensitivity, and for its abundance of wildlife and rich biodiversity.

We flew to Kapawi Ecolodge from Shell and stayed 4 nights there. The flight there was good to see how vast the rainforest is and how many rivers run through it. We had many exciting and educational experiences during our visit. We kayaked twice on a long river and saw howler monkeys in the trees and pink dolphins in water. We visited two villages along the river and learned about their schools and medical facilities. We were taken on an amazing night canoe trip. With the motor off, we heard the stillness of the forest.
There were hikes scheduled every day. Some were easier than others and we always had good help from our guide (I'm 77). We saw army ants on the move, the giant kapok tree and tasted various fruits. Boots were supplied as needed.
The food was excellently prepared and very tasty. We were served at our own table as were the other party that was there at the same time. Next door was an area of guidebooks and we enjoyed looking up the birds we had seen that day.
Our cabin was large and the front porch looked out to a lake. We saw several caterpillars and beetles around the porch and heard screamer birds in the mornings. Drinking water was always supplied in the room and our beds were turned down in the evenings.
Although it rained off and on, we were able to do all the activities. Once, during a downpour, I was given a large elephant ear leaf to keep me dry. It's all part of the fun.
Thanks to all the wonderful staff for an unforgettable experience in the Amazon rainforest basin of Ecuador.

This ecolodge is in an exceptional location and the guides are incredibly skilled.

The lodge was renovated in 2019 and is under a new management structure. Except for a wooden walkway over one small segment of nearby hiking trail, everything was in great shape and the facility was very well run.

Guests sleep in wooden huts that have comfortable beds, showers/toilets, and electricity. However, there is no hot water. Also, this lodge is located in the forest so there will be insects in your room. There is a mosquito net for the bed.

There are 4 activity periods per day with flexibility for the type. Our activities were primarily river cruises, kayaking, day and night hikes, and a visit to an Achuar village.

The guides are top notch. They were quite good at finding animals and pointing out sacred and medicinal plants.

The food served is mainstream fare, but a more traditional Achuar meal was served one evening. The food and portions were good. Dining times are set. Everyone gets the same meal, unless a dietary restriction necessitates something else. My youngest is a vegan and they were able to accommodate her with very little notice. The dining area has a cash bar that serves alcohol and sodas.

An Achuar village visit was included on our last full day. This was a nice opportunity to interact with an indigenous culture that is linked to the wider world and yet maintains its own unique identity. This visit provides an opportunity to buy local handmade crafts with cash.

Great experience. From the logistical support at the airport in Shell to our guides to the food: all excellent. Our two guides made the time there really special. The absolute highlight was visiting Simon’s village. Sharing a bowl of chicha prepared by our host’s wife was unforgettable. A night hike in the jungle, morning canoe trip, river dolphins, birds at a clay lick, bats all around in the evening, colorful snakes, beautiful flowers, learning the traditions of the Achuar: fantastic!

Thank you to everyone involved in the Kapawi enterprise.

This is my second experience at rain forests and what a place! Deep in jungle but still, perfect food, perfect room, extraordinary guide Diego....Each day I did learn new things from my guide, see a lot of birds, monkeys...and the morning wake-up with the monkeys voices....night walks..It's a dream place if you want to explore Amazon.

Deep in the Ecuadorian Amazon jungle is this very special lodge. Butterflies, nesting birds, and exuberant jungle foliage highlight the feeling of being close to nature. The open lodge is the center of daily activities of hiking, fishing, boating, and birdwatching, while the rooms are simple but comfortable. The opportunity to visit an indigenous village contributes to the understanding of the culture and history. All in all a wonderland unique experience and highly recommended.

Our family of 5 (3 kids ages 9, 12, 14) stayed for about 6 days over the New Year. Our stay was incredible! Because the resort is owned by an indigenous Amazonian tribe (with experienced naturalists/biologists on the tours), a stay at this resort is incredibly genuine in its feel. You feel like you are helping to protect the environment when you are there, like the resort is truly ecologically minded. I was previously at a lodge on the Brazilian side but this felt so much nicer and truer (less commercial). The cabins are beautiful, the food was absolutely wonderful and the whole experience felt like a once in a lifetime almost other worldly experience. We had so much fun, we learned/ experienced/ saw so much. And every day my kids who normally would opt for video games begged to go swimming again in the amazon! If you have the opportunity, I would highly highly recommend going to Kapawi. Also, the manager helped us with transportation on the remainder of our trip throughout Ecuador (Papallacta, Baños, Mindo, etc.) which made everything seamless and easy.

This is an incredibly special place. Our family of three felt it was an absolute honor to stay at Kapawi and experience the Amazon with the Achuar community as our guides. We are very active and loved the hiking, kayaking, early morning birdwatching, swimming, community visit, and sunset tour. While we appreciated the level of activity, we also got the sense that activities would be tailored for specific needs of a particular group. The people, the surroundings, the food…everything was so well organized and planned. The communication beforehand and the ride from Quito to the airport in Shell and back were seamless. We saw all sorts of wildlife. All food was delicious. The huts were well appointed and perfect for our family. The lodge property itself was stunning and provided many ways to relax and enjoy the surroundings. We would return in a heartbeat. Big thanks to Chumpi who was our guide for the week and the entire staff at the lodge. They made the experience next level.

Our stay at Kapawi was a dream come true and an experience of a lifetime. We learned so much about the local communities and felt so honoured and grateful to be warmly welcomed by them.

Our guide Chumpi taught us so much about local culture and really looked after us. We went on river rides and jungle hikes to see breathtaking wildlife.

The lodge itself is beautiful, the food was exceptional and the staff were so kind and helpful. I would recommend this holiday to anyone.
Thank you Chumpi and Kapawi Eco Lodge for an unforgettable experience!

I'll never forget landing on the dirt airstrip on our way to Kapawi Lodge. Run by the local people, it's an experience like no other. They are friendly, kind and accomodating, sharing stories of childhood and the ways of the jungle. The lodge itself is clean and well maintained, a hideaway tucked between the trees and nestled next to the Amazon river. Carlos was our guide and he was not only knowledgeable but had a heart of gold. This was truely an incredible experience.

Fantastic and magical days in the Ecuadorian Rainforest. Chumpi and his team allowed us to take a glimpse into the fascinating life of the Achuar. We saw beautiful wildlife, spent time kayaking on the river and had still enough time to relax.
The accomodation is great, food is very nice.
