Primarily we were there to scuba dive the Great Astrolabe Reef and while searching the internet the internet page for Matava Resort was the best and most easy to navigate.

We got upgraded to the Honeymoon Bure which has awesome views over the lagoon. Each Bure has an en suite and being an Eco Resort, the power and water are solar. There is a fan that can be operated each evening when the generator is on. Being there in summer, this was a bit hot but also the wet season rain helped cool it down. The days when there was no rain were hot. Wifi is available for purchase

The meals are made fresh from ingredients grown locally and where absolutely delicious and catered for everyone's needs and tastes.

Words cannot express how awesome and friendly all of the Staff are. We had so much fun with so many laughs and memories that will last a life time.
The staff really did make this holiday one of the best experiences I have had not only in Fiji but anywhere I have been. Thank you to all of you.

Oh and the diving was just WOW. Manta Rays, Sharks, Turtles, Eagle Rays and so many fish. The reef system is phenomenal, the healthiest and best coral coverage than anywhere. No fishing line discarded in the water and no plastic rubbish floating on surface.

One more thank you to the staff. We arrived as guests and left as family.

Our family spent four nights at Matava and really enjoyed it. It's a small resort set in a quiet, pristine environment - we saw little sign of habitation on the 45-minute boat trip from the airport. There were beautiful views especially from the bures higher up the hill. The staff were warm and welcoming. The food was delicious, and Sue catered very carefully for one of us who has a food allergy. The guests all sat at the same table to eat, which made for a friendly vibe. We enjoyed our trip to the village and waterfall, as well as kayaking, snorkelling and dips in the natural spring water swimming pool.

I spent almost two weeks in this true paradise on earth! Far from everything, healthy air, magnificent views, trees, colors, sounds...in short, the perfect setting to disconnect from everyday life and recharge your batteries.

And that's not all ! The resort is magical, from the small huts raised from the ground to the strength of the owner, very natural and eco-friendly which does not spoil anything from the setting of the “virgin” island, quite the contrary! Same for the natural swimming pool, the trees full of color. This resort has an incredible history and has everything to give you an unforgettable experience.

Not to mention the food, very good and healthy, the activities to do there, etc.

My 14 year old daughter loved it and we will definitely go back!

Matava is an ideal place to fully unplug.
Sue (the chef) makes delicious food that is really satisfying after snorkeling, kayaking, diving, etc. The sound of waves crashing on the Great Astrolabe Reef is the perfect sound to fall asleep to.

The Fijian staff at Matava are A+. It's impossible to feel anything other than joy while being surrounded by Fijians. I would have loved to share a meal and spend more time with the staff. They were truly magical, and one of the best things about Matava! They made my stay incredible.

Suggestion: more frequent checking on bures to fix any issues would be good. My shower drain was sluggish = flooding the bathroom - a minor nuisance in the face of paradise.

It's also worth noting that the resort isn't very accessible for those with physical disabilities.

Wow, Matava was such a fantastic experience! It exceeded my expectations; I don't even know where to begin. The facilities are authentic, beautifully kept and the food is sensational, fresh, and organic. The staff were also just wonderful. It was a complete delight to swim in the hand-built spring pool. You should try to visit a village while you're there to get a true sense of Fijian culture. We had a lovely experience in a local village whereby the kids got to swim in an incredible waterfall.
All of the people at the dive centre in Matava are extremely skilled and amazing. Due to the world-class reefs being so simple and easy to reach by boat, we had a world-class snorkelling experience.
Wonderful journey, indeed!
I truly can not reccomend this enough, we are definately heading back sooner than later!!!!!

Because of the pandemic, there's definitely an issue with finding staff that are available to provide the variety of services that are listed on the website. We wished that there was more transparency about that before we confirmed our stay.

We were the only guests at Matava the first 4 days of our stay. There were no dive masters for those days, so Mark, the manager, stepped up unenthusiastically one of the days, but mostly dissuaded diving trips because of weather conditions. When one of the two dive masters finally came back, he was incredibly unsafe and clearly not ready to be a dive master. One beginning diver didn't have enough weights going down, so the dive master left the other two divers and went up with the beginning diver... When he didn't come back, the other divers went back up, found the boat, but no dive master, who had gone down with the beginning diver without meeting up with them.

There were also a bunch of other incidents that on their own could have been excusable errors, but altogether meant Matava was just not ready for guests.

Getting to Kadavu is not cheap and while we understand that weather conditions play a big role in diving, we believe that this was just used as an excuse for being understaffed because we learned on our flight home that guests at another resort were able to experience great dives the same week we were on the island.

Had we known earlier, we would have transferred to another resort. We feel lied to and robbed of precious vacation time.

The Fijian staff are amazing! We were very disappointed with the resort. The food was mostly tasty but there was not enough, nothing was offered between lunch at 1pm and 7pm dinner time. My partner mainly went for the scuba diving which was supposed to be amazing on the Astrolabe reef but unfortunately cyclone damage and over fishing have wiped out any large fish. There was no Manta rays or sharks. The weather unfortunately was not good while we were there which was nobody’s fault but we have since found out that there are other parts of Fiji that do not have continuous strong wind and great scuba diving. Our Bure was very private and the bed comfortable. The shower was almost nonexistent and what water there was flooded into the bathroom which means we were walking in a puddle. The front steps of our Bure was rotten and broken, quite dangerous and would have been easy to repair especially when you know visitors are arriving. The boat ride out to the resort was very rough and it was in the pouring rain, if you get seasick I suggest you take sea sick tablets. They have another covered boat which would of been more suitable, we then had to wade through deep mud to reach the resort. We were looking forward to meeting other guests from all over the world but unfortunately we were mainly the only guests which was very disappointing. We knew this resort was basic but there were lots of small things that could of been improved. We would not recommend Matava to anyone.

I wish I had read and took more seriously, the most recent review. The diving was not great. The diving gear was broken. Leaking regs, bcd filling on its own had to disconnect it under water, depth gauges all seemed to not work. Only a diving computer for depth protection. The crew took us on a very unsafe outer reef attempt. It was soo choppy and dangerous we had to turn back. Even the Fijian crew was puking. There is no electricity in the rooms even though pictures showed fans etc. Very expensive for what we got. $10,000 FJD for 7 nights with 4 days of diving. VERY Eco resort, we weren't comfortable much. We made the best of it but that reflects on us well not the resort. Food was pretty good, bed was comfortable. Bathroom flooded like the other reviewer wrote. They did nothing when I asked for a solution.

Don’t review often, but on this occasion wish to express our appreciation for how well we were looked after by the amazing folks at Matava .
Have been home now 2 weeks and every time I hear a drum I’m instantly reminded of the outright delicious meals that were served to us, the best we experienced on our entire trip, thank you Sue Lo and your wonderful helpers. Oh and Ma cocktail of the day extraordinaire.
Thanks Bill and Captain Thomas for taking us diving with the Manta’s an amazing days diving, we hope to join you again one day .
Our only complaint is now having to save up and hurry back to experience it all again
Thankyou Matava until next time
Peta & Rob

Let me tell you about this place. First, we came and were the only people booked for the duration of our stay. Unfortunately. there was a miscommunication between Luke and the resort. If booking through Luke just double check that the resort has your stay booked. This miscommunication led to a 2+ hour delay on getting picked up from the airport.

You would think it would all just be down hill from there, right? Absolutely wrong. This place is amazing and the staff there are beyond amazing! Bill and Mini were great guides out and about. They made sure you stayed safe while out adventuring. Isimeli set an enlightened tone and was a perfect gentlemen of a host. Bua had our room sparkling and refreshed day after day. Sue, the de facto manager and a seemingly Michelin stared chef (puts to shame some starred restaurants I've gone to in the past), took care of us.

Seriously, I cannot say enough about how good is Sue's cooking. She cooked everything from scratch, a lot of it from her garden out back. Perfectly seasoning everything from the starter soups to the decadent chocolate cake. Her meals were a highlight of our stay in Fiji (we made it to three other resorts, some that reported had the "best" restaurants in Fiji)!

For the adventuring, we do not dive so we spent time snorkeling right outside the resort. Which was the best snorkeling we did in Fiji. So many beautiful types of coral right there for you! We saw all sorts of things there. Giant clams, all the fish, soft coral! This place topped the Coral Coast and Savusavu for snorkeling. Also they offer a remote beach day which we recommend doing!

This does not even touch on the little personal details and touches the staff did to make our stay as comfortable as possible. We're already rounding up some friends to go back!! Overall a great experience! Would happily go back.

Totally agree with Adrian the problem is quite minimal, also Fiji does not have any blood Bourne diseases like south east Asia etc. over a 2 week period I think I heard one mosquito but never saw one on that island.

Hi Smittie99, Generally the bures do not have mains power except during the hot summer months (Jan - March) when the bures are powered for fans. The Resort can however provide 12v power for guests with a CPAP machine that has the 12v power option.
