Regrettably, even though our unit ticked a lot of boxes, it had some serious shortcomings. The television set, for example, is a mere apology for a television. In a world in which 50" HD LED has pretty much become a minimum standard, it's almost unforgivable to be palming off guests with such an antiquated TV set. For a place that seeks to be 5-star accommodation, there are some other surprising shortcomings too. The air-conditioner is a relatively noisy internal unit rather than a quiet external unit; the outdoor light, which is greatly needed at night to light the way down the steep steps to the unit, comes on only after one has negotiated the steps in pitch dark; and at least one power point doesn't work. (We only found that out when our camera battery failed to charge overnight, and then tested the power point with various other devices).
As for the service, well, it was ordinary at best. Dear old Fred–amiable, polite and seemingly well-meaning–appeared to be out of his depth when dealing with the fine detail. Clearly, he doesn't work from a check-list. Various bits and pieces were missing. The ice-tray, for example, was all but empty until we refilled it, and delivered only three or four sad-looking ice cubes when we first wanted ice. The side plates that were there on the first morning, for example, were taken away but not returned on the second morning. Thus, we had to use saucers for plates and then didn't have any saucers for the two teacups in the cupboard. Two teacups? For goodness sake, can the owners not afford more than two of everything? As in Noah's ark, there were two of everything regardless of the fact that visitors might want more than a single cup of tea or a single glass of champagne during any 24-hour period. In other words, guests have to wash the glasses and dishes whenever they want seconds. Breakfast–pretty ordinary by any standard and delivered to the unit on the previous afternoon–amounted to a bowl of fruit, a bit of butter and marmalade, some low-grade bread for toasting and reconstituted orange juice rather than freshly-squeezed orange juice. Given that Matiatia Bay seeks to be a five-star B&B, and that the advertising says "bed & breakfast", we had expected a cooked breakfast with a lot more frills; for what we received, the advertising should be saying "bed & plain continental breakfast". Talking of the advertising, it should also refrain from showing pictures of the owners' home that are not open to guests. At least one photograph shows some of the garden that we never saw and were never invited to see. We regularly stay in 5-star accommodation so know what 5-star service is all about. Regrettably, even though there is so much about Matiatia Bay to love, we thought it was more akin to an up-market motel rather than a top-class B&B. In terms of value for money–AUS$1000 for two nights–it's a bit pricy and yet so nearly hits the mark. Dare we suggest that we would would have had a more satisfactory experience if Leagh had been there to keep an eye on the house-keeping? We loved Wahike Island and enjoyed some great experiences there, including lunch at the Mudbrick Restaurant and the Eco-Zip. We weren't uncomfortable at Matiatia Bay and hesitate to say don't go there. Just make sure though that, if you do choose to go there, Fred and Leagh have sorted out the small stuff and that you fully understand what you will and won't get for your money.
The owner, Ms. Leagh King, is wonderful!! She is an amazing hostess and is incredibly friendly. The breakfast she provides is delicious!! In fact, on our last evening we were trying to order a pizza for delivery. The place we called would not deliver and Leagh drove me to pick up the pizza. Above and beyond the call!! I also highly recommend a wine tasting excursion by Ananda tours - very professional and we finished with a wonderful lunch. I also recommend dinner at Cable Bay on the island.
We had the continential breakfast and it was perfect. The place is romantic yet stylish. The perfect couples getaway.
Do yourself and your relationship some good and stay here, you wont be disappointed. Personally - we decided to come back (for two nights next time) whilst driving home. It really is that good.
Grab a bottle of wine, head back to the room, run the spa bath and soak away the cares of the world in the spa with your partner whilst looking at the most spectacular scenery.
