On the upside, the view of the bay below and of Auckland in the distance is magnificent although not quite what one sees in the publicity photographs; the decor is neutral but lovely; the bathroom is excellent; the bed is very comfortable although graced with a rather tired-looking quilt; and the gardens are simple but very well groomed. On the downside though, as the only guests there over Easter, we got the feeling that our amiable but somewhat aloof host Fred, who had been left alone to mind the property, wanted to be somewhere else and saw us as a nuisance. We knew that something was amiss when, on the only occasion that we phoned him to say that the spa was not holding water, he roared at us over the phone to stop phoning him. It transpired that he thought he was being phoned by his wife/partner. He fixed the spa problem by pinching a plug from the other unit but neglected to tell us that the hot water supply is limited and that we should not expect to be able to spend a lot of time in the spa. Quite how he would have fixed the plug problem if the other unit had been occupied is open to conjecture. Because the plug is a bit more complex than a standard bath plug, we're guessing that we would have gone without a spa bath and that that would have been that.

Regrettably, even though our unit ticked a lot of boxes, it had some serious shortcomings. The television set, for example, is a mere apology for a television. In a world in which 50" HD LED has pretty much become a minimum standard, it's almost unforgivable to be palming off guests with such an antiquated TV set. For a place that seeks to be 5-star accommodation, there are some other surprising shortcomings too. The air-conditioner is a relatively noisy internal unit rather than a quiet external unit; the outdoor light, which is greatly needed at night to light the way down the steep steps to the unit, comes on only after one has negotiated the steps in pitch dark; and at least one power point doesn't work. (We only found that out when our camera battery failed to charge overnight, and then tested the power point with various other devices).

As for the service, well, it was ordinary at best. Dear old Fred–amiable, polite and seemingly well-meaning–appeared to be out of his depth when dealing with the fine detail. Clearly, he doesn't work from a check-list. Various bits and pieces were missing. The ice-tray, for example, was all but empty until we refilled it, and delivered only three or four sad-looking ice cubes when we first wanted ice. The side plates that were there on the first morning, for example, were taken away but not returned on the second morning. Thus, we had to use saucers for plates and then didn't have any saucers for the two teacups in the cupboard. Two teacups? For goodness sake, can the owners not afford more than two of everything? As in Noah's ark, there were two of everything regardless of the fact that visitors might want more than a single cup of tea or a single glass of champagne during any 24-hour period. In other words, guests have to wash the glasses and dishes whenever they want seconds. Breakfast–pretty ordinary by any standard and delivered to the unit on the previous afternoon–amounted to a bowl of fruit, a bit of butter and marmalade, some low-grade bread for toasting and reconstituted orange juice rather than freshly-squeezed orange juice. Given that Matiatia Bay seeks to be a five-star B&B, and that the advertising says "bed & breakfast", we had expected a cooked breakfast with a lot more frills; for what we received, the advertising should be saying "bed & plain continental breakfast". Talking of the advertising, it should also refrain from showing pictures of the owners' home that are not open to guests. At least one photograph shows some of the garden that we never saw and were never invited to see. We regularly stay in 5-star accommodation so know what 5-star service is all about. Regrettably, even though there is so much about Matiatia Bay to love, we thought it was more akin to an up-market motel rather than a top-class B&B. In terms of value for money–AUS$1000 for two nights–it's a bit pricy and yet so nearly hits the mark. Dare we suggest that we would would have had a more satisfactory experience if Leagh had been there to keep an eye on the house-keeping? We loved Wahike Island and enjoyed some great experiences there, including lunch at the Mudbrick Restaurant and the Eco-Zip. We weren't uncomfortable at Matiatia Bay and hesitate to say don't go there. Just make sure though that, if you do choose to go there, Fred and Leagh have sorted out the small stuff and that you fully understand what you will and won't get for your money.

The Matiatia Bay bed and breakfast is by far the most amazing B&B my wife and I have ever stayed!! The place is just minutes from the Fullers ferry drop off, which is a 30-40 min ride from Auckland. The ferry departs hourly. The room itself is spectacular with a wonderful view of Matiatia Bay and Auckland. All of the amenities in the room are first class - there is nothing that is missing. The B&B is about a 20-30 min walk to a very cute town - Oneroa - which has wonderful shops and restaurants.

The owner, Ms. Leagh King, is wonderful!! She is an amazing hostess and is incredibly friendly. The breakfast she provides is delicious!! In fact, on our last evening we were trying to order a pizza for delivery. The place we called would not deliver and Leagh drove me to pick up the pizza. Above and beyond the call!! I also highly recommend a wine tasting excursion by Ananda tours - very professional and we finished with a wonderful lunch. I also recommend dinner at Cable Bay on the island.

We stayed at Matiatia Bay the day after our wedding over labour weekend and couldn't of asked for better hosts or a more beautiful place to stay. Leigh went out of her way to make everything as welcoming and relaxing for us as possible - which is just what we needed after hosting a 150 person wedding the day before!! We even had some professional wedding photos taken in and around their beautiful home which Leigh was very accommodating about! It really is the most breathtaking view and residence and we can't wait to see our wedding photos. The breakfast the morning after was very much appreciated as well - bagels with salmon, cream cheese and capers and some fresh fruit and cereal. Delicious! We are looking forward to coming back for our anniversary. Definitely, definitely stay here if you can!!

We booked this place based on their website and reviews. Suggestions of romantic and secluded were made. Based on what we paid this wasn't worth the price. Our main concern was the filth of the place. The carpets are dirty and need change. The bathroom walls had mildew suggesting no one had cleaned the place in ages. The bedsheets had marks in them, the sofa was so dirty neither me or my husband sat on it. It is by far the dirtiest place we have stayed in. We both wanted to leave as soon as we entered. But having paid we had no choice. For a place that isn't serviced there wasn't enough toilet paper or tea bags. The one good thing was that they had complimentary breakfast items such as bread and cheese etc. But never going back here.

We stayed here in November 2012 and quite frankly - we were stunned. This place is sensational; the view, the hosts, the room.

We had the continential breakfast and it was perfect. The place is romantic yet stylish. The perfect couples getaway.

Do yourself and your relationship some good and stay here, you wont be disappointed. Personally - we decided to come back (for two nights next time) whilst driving home. It really is that good.

Grab a bottle of wine, head back to the room, run the spa bath and soak away the cares of the world in the spa with your partner whilst looking at the most spectacular scenery.

We stayed in the Kowhai suite. Great views back over Auckland and the bay. Comfortable suite with great bathroom. Loved the bath overlooking the garden and bay. Breakfast was continental provided the evening before. We found it quite adequate. If you are after a large cooked breakfast then you will be disappointed. We however found it just right. We were keen to visit the many cafes and wineries on Waiheke so a large breakfast wasn't what we were after. All in all a great stay at Matiatia Bay B&B. Would love to go back.

Perfectly situated venue. Leagh was welcoming and friendly and she helped my partner arranged the most romantic surprise proposal. Laying in bed and seeing the sky tower lights in the distance was breathtaking. Standing at the amazing balcony watching the rain and listening to the fireplace crackling in the background and my partner went down one knee. Magical..Its a place where memories are made. Thank You so much.

Just a 35 minute ferry ride ($36 return) from downtown Auckland will see you pulling into the Wharf in this beautiful bay, from here you can do costal walks "Te Ara Hura", jump onto the Hop on Hop off bus ($25) to see the island and the wineries or get a daily bus pass ($10) and explore your way.

Waiheke Island is paradise a short ferry ride from Auckland and the Kowhai Suite at Matiatia offered us the perfect escape balancing convenience to the ferry and town with stunning views and privacy nestled in a Garden of Eden minus the serpent. Think Martha's Vineyard meets Napa Valley with beautiful beaches, wineries, a vibrant art scene and some excellent restaurants. Vacations can be stressful in their own way and the suite was a welcome respite from busy hotels where we could relax. The a/c king bedroom was spacious with tropical furnishings and comfortable sitting areas inside and out. The bathroom had both a bathtub and separate stall rain shower. I was grateful for the chilled bottle of wine waiting for us when we arrived and the most spectacular view of the bay from the bathtub. Total bliss! The wine was so good that we tracked down the winery the next day and spent a lovely afternoon. We had a relaxed start to our mornings with continental breakfast "fixings" stocked in our refrigerator and a list of restaurants guided us to one of our favorite dinners in New Zealand. The only blip was quickly resolved after we realized we left behind a critical item (trust me you can't be in New Zealand without a hat) and property manager Gary graciously handled it so when we came back through Auckland two days later, the hat was waiting at our hotel. Waiheke was a grand escape and the Kowhai Suite was a big part of that and we look forward to a return visit.

If you are a visitor to Auckland City, you must take some time to catch a ferry to Waiheke Island. It is worth it. It is one of the prettiest islands in the Waitemata Harbour and you can catch a ferry from downtown Auckland (around 35-40 minutes ride). You see the harbour and islands and get to visit Waiheke for around $35 dollars return ticket. On the island, there are buses that take you up to the main village of Oneroa, which has a wide selection of restaurants and cafes. There are also tour buses that take you around the island or wine tours (Waiheke has 30 odd boutique vineyards and attached cafes and restaurants with world class reputations (Te Whau , Mudbrick and Cable Bay to name a few). You can hire a car and head out to Onetangi (Casita Miro is great too!!).
