Detailed Reviews

Having missed the turn into the lodge after driving past Bruce Bay we realised the error of our ways and made a U-Turn back to the lodge where we received a very warm welcome on what was a windy and rainy day.
The lodge is very spacious and having booked the standard suite we had a big part of the ground floor to ourselves. The room itself was spacious and had a separate shower room next to the bedroom. On from that was a spacious kitchen area equipped with everything you’d need to have a meal in, as well as tea and coffee. This led out to a lovely garden area but we weren’t able to utilise this due to the weather. The room would be perfect for a family with children or just someone looking for some extra space.
Our hosts, Jacqui and John, were fantastic. Extremely friendly, knowledgeable, helpful and sociable! We thoroughly enjoyed a tour of the grounds by John leading to a stream with eels - well worth seeing. Due to the remoteness of the lodge, we opted for an evening meal at the lodge. This was a social affair with the other guests staying at the lodge, starting off with canapés by a lit fire. The food was delicious as was breakfast.
All in all this was a great one night stop en route to Queenstown. Despite the remoteness you could certainly spend at least a couple of days and enjoy the wild natural beauty of the area and the lodge itself. Highly recommended!

Conveniently located within 30-45 minutes of Fox Glacier, this is a great location to see the Southwestern beaches and glaciers. The hosts are friendly and cook wonderful breakfasts and dinners along with a wine, cheese, and meat social hour. We also enjoyed peaceful walks along the beach. Highly recommended if you enjoy peace and quiet.

We arrive at Mahitahi Lodge on a cool, wet autumn day after a lovely drive on the spectacular Haast Highway. We were warmly welcomed by Jacqui and John. We were given a tour of their beautiful home built by John and invited for appetizers and drinks in their great room with a lovely roaring fire. In the morning, we were delighted to be served with a delicious breakfast which included an omelet, bacon, oatmeal and various fruits. Jacqui went out of her way to accommodate my gluten free dietary requirements.
After breakfast John took us on a tour of Bruce Bay. During the tour John spoke about the history of the area including that of the indigenous people and pointed out some of the ancient Kauri trees.
Jacqui and John were wonderful hosts and made our stay with them very memorable.

We expected amazing things from this ‘luxury B and B’. It was in fact quite ordinary and relative to every other B and B we stayed in during nearly 4 weeks in New Zealand very expensive. We had a very reasonable dinner but again the cost was high. The hosts Jacqui and John were pleasant and our room was quiet.
This is not a terrible place but at over £250 for 1 night it did not compare to other places. Please see my review of Amberlea B and B just up the coast which cost us £156 for TWO nights !

We welcome all reviews as it gives us the opportunity to look at any improvements to how we take care of our many guests. In saying that receiving a 3 rating is very disappointing given the reasons stated in the review. To state that our tariff was expensive compared to a B and B in Hokitika is not comparing apples with apples. The price you show for staying with us includes dinner including accompanying drinks whereas the B&B you compare us to did not. The pricing for our dinner, which includes locally sourced product where available and generous amounts of good NZ wine and beer, is as advertised, so to complain about something after the fact when you are under no obligation to dine with us leaves us somewhat perplexed. We enjoy meeting and spending time with our guests, having good conversation over dinner and often going out on beach walks and star gazing with them in the evenings. This option was available for you also but you chose not to take it and that’s ok it isn’t for everyone but it is part of the experience of staying with us. On departure you were given sightseeing suggestions for your onward journey to ensure you make the most of your travels. Try as we might we can’t please everyone all of the time and it would seem on this occasion we’ve missed the mark with you but we trust you enjoy the rest of your travels around NZ and wish you safe passage back home.

Staying with Jacqui and John in their beautiful home perfectly complimented our adventures on the west coast of New Zealand. After escaping from bigger towns on the north island and the south island's east cost, we were pleasantly greeted by their amazing hospitality and delicious cooking as we dined with them for two breakfasts and dinner. Traveling with two boys, it was lovely to have them be treated like family and to visit with other travelers staying with us from around the world. We very much enjoyed feeding the eels and short walks to the bay, around our adventures into the glacier area during the day. They were gracious to offer other scenic stops along our way and genuinely curious about our family and our time in New Zealand. Staying in Mahitahi may not offering the expansive amenities of some locations, but the experience of being hosted by Jacqui and John surpassed all our expectations and will be one of the highlights of our family holiday in New Zealand.

We stayed at Mahitahi for 2 nights with amazing hosts John and Jacqui. As well as supremely comfortable surroundings and top notch food and wine, both of our hosts went beyond the extra mile in being informative about local history and Maori tradition as well as making great recommendations about sights and things to do. As a result, the 48 hours we spent in this beautiful part of the world was filled to the brim with awesome adventures.

We stopped at Mahitahi Lodge on the way to the glaciers. Jacqui and John are amazing and lovely hosts. We had the pleasure of enjoying the best breakfast on our three week trip around the island. The lodge is perfect for re-energizing after some travelling. Clean, quiet, spacious and feeling like being at home. Also Jacqui had a lot of recommendations available for us which helped a lot to plan the upcoming activities activities for the remainder of the journey. Would definitely stop there again if we do a similar trip.

What a great place stay. Jacky and John are very nice and friendly dedicated hosts. They keep their professional distance and are there when you need them. Jacky is a great cook and John makes a perfect personalized breakfast. Apart from that John has great knowledge about Mauri culture and is willing to share if you are interested. He is a story teller. We highly recommend this lodge !!
