Stayed here for just over 3 months being promised that there would be farmwork available in the next few weeks. The farmwork "list" is a bit of a joke to be honest, I managed to get 15/88 of my farmwork days done here, and every time I got a single day of work I'd be moved to the bottom of the list to start again. Left here feeling ridiculously frustrated! My friends are currently on farms, and the new manager of the hostel rang those farms and told the farmers to fire their employees as they should be employing people from the hostel, for people who just want to stay in this country longer, this is beyond a joke to just be ripping people off!

I stayed here for 2 nights in a very small 4 bed dorm. First and most important thing, there is no air con! Fans are provided in the rooms but all they do is push warm air around the room! Curtains and very thin, they may as well just not have curtains as they don't block out any light! Beds are no comfortable at all, I sank so far into the mattress I could feel the frame!
The room was very small for 4 people with big backpacks, it didn't leave much room for moving about in the room. Also there are only 2 lockers in the room for valuables.
Showers were average at best, no where to hang your towel or put your toiletries.
Nice location, short walk to the beach front and the canals are just around the corner.
Staff were very friendly! But on check in failed to let the guests know about have to put a deposit down if you need cutlery etc.
The kitchens were not kept clean at all! At one point a friend of mine put everything away and housekeeping just said "it will be dirty again in 5 minutes", so the upkeep of the kitchen needs to be more policed.
Common areas shut at 9.30pm, forcing you to either sit in your extremely hot, tiny rooms or go out of the premises.
Pool is nice, clean(ish).
Free stand up paddle session was great! Scott was a great guide and had a really great time!
Mooloolaba is a lovely little place but I would suggest as a backpacker 1 or 2 nights max is all you need here!

This review has just extremely positive or extremely negative aspects.
The location is good, the beach is not far.
The guys of the staff are amazing, everybody kind, always smiling.. very nice.
Something to do is organized every day, and usually, they are free activities.
There is the possibility to use bike or boards for free and this is very good.
Unfortunately, the hostel is very very dirty, toilettes and showers weren't clean in 4 days I stayed.
The rooms are very warm, there isn't blind in the window and here there is the sun at 4,30 in the morning.
The hostel is very noise, nobody respects the hours for rest and in the morning a guy blow leaves from the pool area with a very noise machine.
There isn't stuff to cook in the kitchen, just a few old dishes, not enough.
My stay here was good, but it could be better.

I'd heard many good reviews of this place from friends that had stayed here a couple years back.

Unfortunately it seems this place has just been left to rot and has gone completely down hill. We stayed here on 2 different occasions and neither were good experiences.

There's no denying the location of this hostel is great. Just a few minutes walk to the beach front and near all the restaurants and bars so it's a shame to see how much potential this hostel has.

The rooms in the hostel itself are completely filthy. On both occasions we stayed in 2 different rooms, both rooms were extremely dirty. Infested with cockroaches, cobwebs everywhere, bugs crawling on the floors and even a footprint on the ceiling? Also, the rooms stink. Like smell very bad.

Our room nor communal bathroom wasn't cleaned once during our stays and without judgement, there were questionable people staying at the hostel. This is NOT for backpackers.

I've stayed at many hotels all over the world including in Australia and this is by far the dirtiest I've stayed in. Unfortunately no excuses and the other hostels I've stayed in Australia have been lovely.

Just be prepared this place is not full of backpackers and it's dirty. Yes it's cheap but you get what you pay for.

Love coming back to this place year after year. Staff is friendly and helpful and they offer stand up paddle boarding in the canals close by. Great location, close to the beach and clean rooms.

Can't wait to stay there again.

Avoid avoid avoid!!

Start with the Pros - close to the bus stop for Greyhound which is handy
Staff were friendly, yet useless really

Now for the cons
Staff - as i said, very friendly but didnt sort anything out when i told them how dirty my room was or the amount of bugs in the room! Also didnt check me in right, then told me my room was a different number than it was

No aircon anywhere, rooms are boiling as are communal areas!

Communal areas shut early so no where to go at night

Very noisy, and full of people who live there permanently working, so interact with eachother rather than you. You feel like you are invading their space when you arrive at the room

Kitchens were understocked so could hardly cook

Rooms are tiny with one plug between 4, not good!

Free breakfast was one loaf of bread that once run out, thats it

Now for the main issue..

CLEANLINESS

All i can say that this place is absolutely disgusting. I had to climb over a drill to get into the shower, surely thats not acceptable?? When mentioning cleanliness i was told 'it'll just get dirty again soon'

So many cockroaches and ants everywhere I cant even explain. I told staff about the ants but nothing was done. They were EVERYWHERE in my room, shower, bed, clothes, everywhere! I left after one night and slept on the beach it was that bad! I cant even explain the extend of it, please see my photos as a guide

Mooloolaba is a great place, as is marochydore, please stay elsewhere and dont even give this place the time of day!

Hi There, We are so sorry you did not enjoy your stay with us. I have investigated this matter and whilst we do our best to keep the ants and moths at bay, doors open with lights on are always going to attract insects. We live in Australia - and ants file right before rain which was the case in this matter. Unfortunately the noise curfew is set by the council, but this ensures our neighbors and guests have a peaceful rest after 10pm. Our free breakfast is a range of breads, cereals, condiments daily, we stock this heavily to ensure we do not run out. If there was a shortage of the morning you ate, our apologies that staff were not present to re-stock for you before you departed. again apologies you did not enjoy your stay.

We've booked it with a friend as it's right next to the bus stop and we needed a place to stay for the night. Big mistake. It made our experience of Mooloolaba terrible. The room was for 4, which is supposedly good compared to 12 bed dorms. Although it was disgusting. The person who lived in it must've been there forever as it felt like all the beds had been slept in and we that we were totally invading his space. The bathroom door had a shoe lace on it that you needed to stuck in the door so you wouldn't end up locked inside. The toilets were broken. The bed frames so unstable I thought it was about to collapse. No curtains. The tiny fan is useless. One plug in the bathroom. Graffitis all over the room. We haven't used the kitchens, we preferred to eat outside.
The communal area is old too. Only the TV is recent.
This hostel is by far the worse I've ever been to and on top of that, it's expensive! $35/night
Do not book there.

Hi there! We are so sorry that you did not enjoy your stay in Mooloolaba. Our friendly staff would have definitely moved your room should a complaint have been made to them that the room was unsuitable. I have taken note of the maintenance items and our team will look into this more. We would love to make it up to you as we offer so many fantastic activities for free and our hostel vibe is amazing. Its unfortunate you experienced the opposite. please email us at info@mooloolababackpackers.com :)

I booked a double room with ensuite. What I got was worse than a prison cell - bare concrete block walls, a double bed with a mattress that was really squeeky and lopsided, a rickety wicker chair and nothing else apart from the shower/toilet. No night table, no cupboard, not even a shelf. All my things had to stay on the floor. There were two holes in the wall that obviously held the bracket for a TV but the both were non existent (it was obvious it was for a TV because the aerial connection was below).
And the noise at night right through to the wee small hours was unbelievable!! If you want a party-packers, this is the place for you. If you want a good night's sleep, stay well away.
The kitchen was an absolute pig-sty. There was a notice up to wash and dry your dishes, but there were no tea towels to dry them with, supposing you even bothered to wash them.
If this had been my first experience of a backpackers, I would never visit another, but fortunately there ARE some that are reasonable. This is not one of them.
It does have free wifi, but only in the reception/lounge area. None in rooms. It also has free breakfast between 8 & 9am but I didn't use this service. The location is excellent, being a very short distance to the beach in one direction and a reasonable shopping centre within walking distance the other way.

Perfect example of a hostel that does not care about their clients. We stayed here over the weekend with friends we were a group of 5 in 3 different rooms. All had a mould problem in the bathrooms that would take months to get to this standard. Two of the bathrooms fans were not working but if the steam sets of the alarms you pay over a $1000 fine. Most bunks have no ladders or railings and staff didn’t care that this could be a potential safety risk to their clients, their response was ‘ no ones fallen off yet...’ also a managers response in a previous review back in March said they would sort the wifi out... this has not happened...still the same story. This hostel is not worth the experience. We paid less for a private double bed that offered the same perks if more in a Harvey Bay backpackers. This hostel needs some serious competition so they are forced to improve their very low standards. Backpackers needing farm work: the work that is provided here most people were earning $80 a day with $180-$204 for rent but are required to sign a contract that if they leave the hostel they will lose their jobs but the staff will tell you that this is NOT a working hostel 😂 but if your desperate and only require your days this place could benefit you but the turn over rate for workers was high due to the workers not being fast enough. No refund if you need to leave before your weeks up and rent has to be paid FRIDAYS despite what day you arrived, if you are choosing to work through this hostel. Big disappointment if only their product was as good as their advertising... my advice as a trained travel consultant that is currently traveling Australia designing her own backpacker trail for future clients, spend your hard earned money else where 😁

Hi MikiT. Thank you for your review. I spoke to your group upon check out and what you have 'quoted 'seems to be slightly off the mark. Please be more accurate when quoting staff so that it is a true representation. The vents have been addressed with maintenance. The hostel is undergoing renovations as we speak.- This includes updating wifi boosters on each floor as you would have seen the electricians & other contractors here over the last week . There are a lot of improvements happening in stages in the coming months which will see room improvements. We have just replaced every single mattress with inner spring & frames are in the next stages. Renovations do take time, but we are really excited with the plans in place. We definitely do care about our guests. We provide a free recruitment for local farms and farms vary between hourly & piece rates. Guests who are doing their regional work have requested their rent day as Friday as farms pay wages on Thursdays, so we have merely done this to benefit our guests. As you selected to be on our free job recruitment, one would think this would appeal to you. We get a lot of return guests and recommendations for having this service, i apologise that it didn't live up to your standard. Everything you mentioned on check out is being addressed. We have 24/7 onsite staff to address on the spot issues should they arise. We wish you all the best in your future travels & would love to make it up to you should you return this way :)

We stayed on the top foor, lv 3. Paid 1 nt for $85. We could hear rats running around in the ceiling all night. Upon check-out, I reported this to reception, all she said was ‘I wil have a look’. No apology or anything.

It was also the rule that we had to carry bedsheets and towels down to ground floor upon checking out.

Bathroom was so dirty.
Free wifi but only around communal areas. There was a sign ‘wifi is sh*t, talk to each other’. That was sadly hilarious.

Free breakfast was cereals, plain toast and jam and coffee. Don’t expect anything if you want to stay here.

Hi MrMrsbeachexplorer, Thank you for leaving a review. We take on board all feedback, good & bad so that we can improve our hostel. We do not have a rat issue in the ceilings. We do have resident possums that live in the trees that are level with the 3rd floor. Bringing sheets down to reception is a standard hostel procedure to help housekeeping determine whether guests have completed check out & many hostels share this. We will of course check the bathroom cleanliness & our wifi is currently in upgrades to ensure all floors receive free wifi in the near future. The breakfast we provide is continental and complimentary. We provide a range of cereals, breads and condiments with tea & coffee and even cater to dairy free guests... Many guests really enjoy this free feature. Again, thank you for the feedback. We hope you enjoy the rest of your travels in Australia.
