At Bahia Principe Grand El Portillo, guests have commended the resort for its inviting atmosphere, complete with lively entertainment and charming details. The cleanliness, particularly of the beach and pool, earns high marks, as does the variety of food options. However, there are calls for enhancement in both the amenities and room experiences, with some describing the latter as spacious yet dated.
While the staff's friendliness is often highlighted, service can sometimes be slow and unresponsive. Moreover, concerns have been raised about the value, with critiques of pricey food and crowded facilities.

We visited this hotel mid January, 2020, for one week.
Great place to stay and take some time off from a hectic life and cold weather!
We’ve been before in another hotel of this brand in Mexico. Also came back completely satisfied!
The level of service is outstanding!
You constantly see the employees working all over the place, cleaning in the beach, or serving the food and beverages areas, even painting the hallways.
The main buffet restaurant offers every day a special such as Asian food, of Seafood, Italian, and the like.
We only went to the Italian restaurant “Portofino” and the meal was really good, couldn’t make it to the others, unfortunately.
Beverages are always available around the pool areas or at the lobby bar in the evening.
The entertainment group was a little small for the size of the hotel, but they worked very hard to keep guests taking part in different activities.
The hotel beach area, in my opinion, is not as big, but you can walk at least for three hours and swim in any part you may wish.
We did walk a lot from almost one end to the other, the good thing is that they take note of those guests leaving the limits of the hotel in the beach.
We didn’t run into trouble as the locals who go to the beach keep to themselves and don’t bother you at all. Still I would suggest you not bringing with you pricey camaras or phones, specially of you’re planning to swim!
When we arrived the hotel was packed, so it was hard to find where to lie down in the beach. All the chairs or recliners were taken (typical a towel and nobody around for hours). I guess whomever comes with a way to avoid this type of behavior, will end up a millionaire! LOL.
The food all in all was really good, the buffet for breakfast, lunch or dinner offered a great variety of fruits, vegetables, meats, desserts, even gluten free type!
The last day we were traveling late at night, so we paid about US$35 to stay until 5pm.
The room was spotless as well as the bathroom which included a jacuzzi bathtub!

The staff is extremely hard working and each and every member of the team goes the extra mile to ensure your stay is a happy one.
The grounds are clean and immaculate; trees and gardens are perfectly maintained. It feels very lush and tropical and the beach is stunning. There is a long coral reef that protects the beach which results in calm, crystal clear water.
Beautiful view of the beach from the restaurants. Food is very tasty with plenty of choices for everyone and delicious fresh fruit. Menu varies from day to day with different theme each day.
Entertainment team made our stay fun and busy with activities! At first I was afraid that my kids will be bored but my 2 girls had fun all week long. Between volleyball, ping pong, darts and many other games the entertainers always kept them busy. Thank you Rony D (tiger eyes), Pedro, Viktor, Kendri, Coconut la cabeza, Gabriel (loco bingo) and the rest of the team. The beach party was a nice ending to a week in paradise.
We for sure will be coming back!

A lot to digest? Read an AI-generated summary of recent traveller reviews.
We went at what is probably the busiest time of the year, Christmas but I think a lot of people backed out as a result of Omicron. It was never too busy. Restaurants are nice and food selection was varied enough. For an all inclusive I'd say the food is above average but of course it's still mass made food. Some items look really good but are off mark for taste especially at the a la carte restaurants.
Staff are friendly and do a good job. Entertainment is pretty consistent including a very good Circus show.
Shampoo, conditioner, comb and soap are provided in the room along with a hair dryer and bath towels. Mini fridge with free drinks restocked daily. Facemaks were available at the lobby desk. Swimming towels are provided at the beach. Still good to bring toothpaste.
Lots of people do the "beach lounger reservation" of towels so you end up with unused prime location loungers for much of the day but generally there are lots of lounge chairs.
Local diving is dull but there are some fish to see within view of the beach and even right at the shore. I suspect any interesting dive sites must be a much further boat ride away.
Beds are on the firm side. We had two rooms and the king beds were real King size mattresses not just doubles pushed together.
Areas near the "discoteca" area (near the front gates) will be noisy until 1am.
Teen club is good if your teen wants some video gaming or billards time but we found it more trouble as it lures the kids away from the outdoors.
Credit cards accepted most places on the resort and with the operators.
Facilities all seemed in pretty good shape. I suspect they have updated some things recently. No signs of disprepair. Lots of mini shuttles available to move around the resort.
Bring some light block stickers or black electrical tape for the very bright blue light that indicates the router is working but which illuminates much of the room at night.

The resort itself is beautiful breath taking cannot deny the features of white sandy beaches and along with the newly renovated pool area. The food is also spot on, but its not enough to balance the lack of engagement.
What they lack is the guest experience, not a fault of the staff as they are returning from hiatus of not working due to pandemic. On there busiest day Saturday, they decided to close the snack bar leaving guest with the option of only the buffet which is El Limon for the entirety of the whole compound. Then we find out that a section of the Buffet is also close due to cleaning, mind you this is Saturday in the peak of their operations Lunch period open only for 2hrs 1:00PM to 3:00PM. They give the reason of cleaning during 2hrs Lunch Time while we packed ourselves with other guest in the buffet area, talk about social distancing and Covid guidelines out the window. Sacrificing guest experience as well as safety of everyone on top of that guest are checking in for the weekend nowhere to eat since Snack Bar is closed and Buffet just closed there door in preparation for dinner service. Not sure who made the decision to close Snack Bar and closed down a section of Buffet area during peak operational business, it doesn’t make business sense nor is it fair for current guest safety and weary travelers coming in as they don’t have a place to grab a bite.
I spoke to concierge guest service whose smart decision making was it to close down these area. You don’t have the guest experience in mind not the safety of everyone. Your closing areas down during peak lunch service when lunch service ends at 3:00PM thats means for the entire compound to eat within 2hrs time in a closed space and you have 4hrs downtime between Lunch and Dinner to do cleaning.
If your gonna promote the resort as open please have the capacity to serve guest, as you open your door open area don’t close them. Doesn’t make sense to have more guest in such small spaces as your just asking to get closed down if someone contracted Covid in the resort.
Entertainment is lacking as show is not daily only weekend, the animation team lack presence as they only stay in 1 area and not mingling in the crowd. It’s more of a hangout spot for animation team easy quick pay no effort at all. I’ve been to other Bahia Resort with bigger compound animation team are more active and do justice with minimal staffing, comparison to the team in this resort stay in the same palm tree day after day without any interaction not to mention their not friendly at all.

With all my respect to COVID protocols, that was not a problem. The problem was with rooms not being ready to reopen and we experienced it first hand coming the day after the resort reopened. Nothing happened in terms of room remodeling. All still the same. Not bad but not better. But the first building we were put in (10) did not have wifi, shower was dripping cold water and sink was completely clogged. We asked to be moved to a different room, and that was timely because the whole building lost power the minute we dragged all our half unpacked luggage downstairs.
The building we were staying last year (26) had remodeled rooms that had a bit better overall feel. So we asked to be moved there. But the shower did not have water at all, sinks were dripping and toiled did not flush 😫
We went to and called the front desk probably 15 times in our first day, it was not what we were hoping for to get in terms of a bit of relaxation after a very hard year.
We had our hopes high since the website boasted the new better experience after the renovations, and they clearly were not ready. Who cares about the new swim up bar if you literally cannot do simple things as taking a shower or flushing a toilet?

Extremely understaffed only handful of staff know any English at all. Food is good but service is horrible. During breakfast u get ur coffee after 30-40mins maybe bring ur own water cause refills if u get one takes way too long. Ask for cutlery doesn’t come in timely fashion if at all. Lunch n dinner hope u don’t like pop bc u can’t pour ur own and when u ask like 6 times u still might not get it. A la carte slow as molasses n got a burnt chicken parm not sure how they even thought it was ok to serve. Asked for a spoon for my baby never came. Then my daughters dessert never came and asked three different staff all said ok maybe cause they can’t speak any English n we waited 25 mins and just up n left bc it was ridiculous to have to ask 3 times n still no dessert. Then my room roof started leaking right on top toilet called for maintenance he came and again not a lick of English told me it was ok he left n it was still leaking so I opened it up myself found the leak n seen someone was called for this before and thought if they put a little bit of tissue the problem would resolve itself what a joke. He came back out I showed the maintenance guy what was wrong n he agreed it now was still leaking after he told me no problem. Spoke to supervisor n he wanted me to wake my kids to move us told him no I asked for key for other room so we can use washroom he told me I have to move all my stuff which would include waking my kids. Then he told me to come see them at 930am so I can change rooms at there most convenient time not mine when we wake up at 6am then told me ok 730am. I’m sorry but I understand stuff breaks down but this was an existing problem and would think they would make it somewhat more convenient for us bc it’s not our fault but obviously not. Water park is great for kids. Right now as far as it stands Will not recommend n will never stay at a grand Bahia in Dominican.

I've visited other parts, Puerto Plata, Punta Cana, Juan Dolio, but for me no. 1 is the beach and this one was gorgeous. Hotel I'd rate 4-4.5*, no complaints. Rooms spacious, AC working great, food big variety, Covid precautions they try hardest. Wear mask in all enclosed areas, you get plastic glove at buffet restaurants, they take ur temp (quick one tap close ur wrist). 4x out of 7 days u get to book specialty restaurant, we really liked Italian and Brazilian, Greek was more middle Eastern, and not great. Staff don't speak English, basic words like, potatoes or sour, she didn't understand (a la carte restaurant). Lotsa activities throughout the day. We bought 2 excursions, "3 beaches trip" full day USD 89 (they drive you more than hour to the most Eastern tip, then gorgeous beaches Fronton, Madame and Rincon, but to get there boat was bumpy as hell (windy). El Limon waterfall, 1/2 day, gorgeous, $49, not far from hotel maybe 15 min, we were 1st close to 10 am, alone at waterfall, within 20 mins crowds of ppl. They assign u horse and guide who leads horse, uneasy terrain, up and down, muddy but horses know the route and seems safe. Guides however seem disappointed with $10 tip, they want like $20, on top of what u paid. True, they even wash ur muddy feet when u r trying get back to your galoshes, point out exotic plants, but u decide. I had only $13 on me, she didn't look happy lol. U can walk it, but the mud, rocks, only for the fit. Hotel beach gorgeous, all shades of blue, nice reef espec across from where snack open restaurant is, fishies plenty. It rains literally 3-4x a day, BUT it's quick 5 min downpour and blue sky again. All week it was very windy, yellow or red flag always. I love paddleboarding, SUP, they have 2 boards plus kayaks as part of water sports, free. Wind so strong i struggled, and I'm experienced. Covid PCR test for getting back to Toronto was 70USD, took about 1.5 hr, quick bus trip, then wait in line. Results next day afternoon at front desk. Our bus to airport upon return was too early,we gained extra 2 hrs of beach time by hiring local taxi Mario, tel or WhatsApp +1 (829) 559-1885. $60 for 4 or $40 for 2 to Samana airport

This was our second trip to the Bahia Principe Grand el Portillo. The first was 5 years ago, and we had been wanting to return.
The recent renovation made this feel like a brand new resort. The pool was large, and the water warm. It’s quite deep for a resort pool, no slope to it, but had higher levels near the swim up bar.
The food in the buffet was excellent, a great variety of offerings. There was fruit I’d never heard if so it was nice to try some different things. A few days they served Chicken Pita and a pasta or rice by the beach at lunch. We only went to the beach restaurant one for lunch, found the selection there limited.
When you entered any eating area, you were required to wear a mask, and they’d give you a glove for your serving hand so that there was no contamination of the serving utensils. They had a gluten free area, and a healthy eating section, in the main buffet. We are not big on a la cartes, but did try the Greek, it was meh! And we ate at the Brazilian twice. The second time we both found the food far too salty.
The staff were all extremely friendly, warm and welcoming.
I found the resort very clean, the washrooms by the pool and beach can get a bit sandy during the day, as people go in dripping wet with sandy feet, that’s hard to stay on top of, but they tried very hard. The washrooms by the buffet had motion controlled lights, they need to extend the timer, you’d just get in the stall and the light would go off, leaving you waving your arm to get them in again.
Our room was in Villa 7, on the top floor. From our balcony in the evening we could hear the music from the entertainment on the lobby. A couple of evenings took a drink and went there rather than sit on the patio. It was very close to the lobby and the beach. The room 7303 was clean, the bed adequate, mattress could stand an upgrade, the linens good quality but the pillows were horrible. Small square ones that were all flat and lumpy. We had chosen a jr suite so had a separate tub and shower. The maid was prompt in cleaning our room and we often had flowers on the bed.
The beach is stunning, perfect for long walks on the beach. Going to the east, it’s quite undeveloped and natural. I saw some beautiful sunrises to the east and sunsets as well. I’m an early riser, was on the beach just at sunrise, never had trouble finding a spot, there are lots of trees and we preferred to be there rather than a palapa.
We flew with Air Transat and the hotel had reps at the airport to do our check in, give us our armbands etc prior to boarding the bus. Once at the resort we just picked up the room keys and headed to our room.
The best thing we can say is that we loved it, and are planning our next visit in 2023.
Very friendly staff. Excellent customer service. Front desk and customer service staff speak very good English.
Every thing and everywhere is sparkling clean.
They follow great COVID measures e.g. sanitizing tables & beach loungers between customers, masks has to be worn and sanitizers in common areas, you need to wear a glove before helping yourself to the buffet.
Special thanks to our friends: Marcos and Antonio (Front desk), Amy, Ester, Samuel, Alex and Nicolas (restaurant staff).
The land scape is very well maintained although it's a huge property.
Deducted a star for our not great Fish Market restaurant experience (they don't communicate well in English and the fish wasn't marinated well).
Also because the same drink from different bars tastes different! We liked the Sport bar the best.
We enjoyed our experience in the Greek restaurant. The food was tasty and very close to the authentic flavors.
Rooms are very clean and the bed was comfy but needs a bit of maintenance especially with bathrooms.
Internet coverage throughout the property is amazing from the beach to the security gates!

We loved our stay at Bahia Principe Grand El Portillo.
Pros:
The beach is large and safe and you can snorkel from shore, there are areas of coral. We did this every day and loved it.
The rooms are very nice, the grounds are planted with tropical gardens that are very well taken care of.
The public areas are well maintained and clean.
The activity pool has an area for small children.
We enjoyed all the restaurants and bars and found the food selection to be quite diverse.
Staff is always smiling and helpful.
Cons (minor):
People are reserving chairs at 5am with towels.
Water pressure in shower could be better.
There are some mosquitoes at night. Just bring bug repellent.
Overall we would highly recommend this resort and will likely return.

Usually Friday to Sunday. We have been there fourteen times never had any issues. Don't go in September they have national celebrations. Hope this helps. Beautiful resort can't wait to return 😍
45$ but free if u can drive it yourself
Of course you can always ask for more from your maid or at the bar!
It depends on the time of year that you go. My spouse only speaks English and had no problem.
