Detailed Reviews
We loved our stay at Citta dei Nicliani - a secluded stone tower turned boutique hotel en route to deeper Mani. Our hosts, Panos and Tania, looked after us so well - cooking us delicious Maniot spaghetti, sending us off to sweet little swimming spots, and even sending back our clothes when we left them behind! If that's not first class service, I don't know what is... Seriously though, this is a beautiful place to say - a real treat for anyone planning a trip to this idyllic part of the Peloponnese.

Located few kilometres from Aeropoli and few minutes drive from Gerolimenas and the other coast villages is the perfect place to stay. An old stone house has been renovated by the family that runs it and you feel that you are invited to stay with friends and not in an hotel. With only 7 rooms you have to book early but on the other hand is peaceful and quiet. The food is more than excellent and the service by the family really good, friendly and professional.Breakfast is prepared on the spot with local ingredients or what they have produce fresh in the garden. This is also the place for wine lovers since they have a very large cellar with special wines from all over the world. Highly recommended. A perfect gateway for a weekend.

We stayed here before Covid and loved the place. Decided to visit again hoping that the standards had remained as good and they certainly have. It remains so calm and peaceful that you can not fail to relax. The food, both breakfast and evening meals, are first class and we opted for the half board which is great value for money. The family take the role of hosts very seriously which means that they are warm and friendly but, at the same time, always professional and attentive. Everywhere you look there is fabulous attention to detail to make ones stay memorable. Cannot recommend it highly enough.

We are staying at the hotel, serving authentic hospitality next to their delicious breakfast and food. There are only 9 rooms, so the host has a lot of attention and is dedicated to give you the best time. Not only in the hotel, but also in the region surrounding it. There are guests from many nationalities and ages, all friendly and happy to be at this special place.

The hotel is set within an old stone village and has a beautiful setting to watch the sunset (and hear the evening calls of the jackals). Rooms are comfortable and traditionally furnished. Service was friendly with one young lady seemingly doing everything and working very hard. It did feel a little strict at times (make sure you book dinner, give your menu options, don’t water mark the furniture, accusingly being told we could use tap water for the kettle and a little aggressive at check out even though I had not complained about anything - sometimes you just don’t want the confrontation ) which detracted from the experience. Little things could have been handled better - we were given a kettle but no cups or spoons, no lighting outside at night meant we stumbled in pitch black due to an early start (it’s quite a climb from car park and very steep stairs to our room) and the previous hotel packaged a small breakfast for us due to an early start. Maybe ask guests at breakfast if they are having dinner and give them a menu etc if it’s such a big deal to the owners.
I wasn’t that impressed with the food, very dry chicken and oily and salty spaghetti and have seen better breakfasts in Greece although it was well presented. I accept others enjoyed it so maybe a matter of taste or wrong choices although we were never offered a wine list - even though we had just arrived from a vineyard which might suggest some interest in wine. Setting is beautiful for dinner and would want to eat there again for that reason alone.
Having said all the above it is excellent value for money and so didn’t complain, would recommend it. I wouldn’t return but only because it’s quite remote and am not a fan of places which have too many rules for guests. I would recommend some extra help for the young lady (my apologies but she never said her name) and maybe they could have some small touches e.g ordering a glass of wine or something else in the evening on the terrace with a few nibbles etc/information about services in the room etc.

We spent one week at the Tower house and we enjoyed every minute. We found wine and homemade jams upon our arrival. There was also body cream, hand cream, linen fragrance and face water.
We experienced the true Mani. The village is authentic and we loved all the recommendations from Zaira.
We relaxed and enjoyed the pool.
We visited Monemvasia and Kardamyli.
There is a traditional Greek tavern, one minute walking distance from the house. The food was really good.
Thank you for the amazing stay, we can’t wait to come back again

This boutique hotel was very nice and the owners are very friendly. When you’re staying there you have some feelings that you are living in the castle 300 years back. The breakfast was very tasteful and very different then in another hotels and that is Something which is different than another place and that is something good.
The room was very nice and very clean we stay in new building and everything was very very nice.
I can highly recommend this hotel for everybody who want to go to try something luxury and aged together.

Citta die Nicaliani is a sublimely beautiful and relaxing place to stay. The two hosts do everything possible to make their guests feel comfortable and make the most of their visit to the region. The rooms are comfortable and beautifully appointed and the entire complex has an otherworldly sense of serenity. The meals are excellent and there is a great selection of wines. We’d love to come back!

A really interesting hotel in a small village in the outer Mani. It is converted from some old towers and buildings which has informed the layout and design.
Parking in just below the hotel, some might find it a little awkward and I wouldn't want to arrive in the dark on my first arrival. You then follow some signs up to the gate and across the hotel's terrace. Bedrooms are dispersed around the buildings, most requiring negotiation of some steps . The historic building means that they are little on the small side but wonderfully designed and with interesting decoration.
The bed was large and comfortable. Sheets and towels are changed every 2-3 days. Good double glazing and aircon. We slept very well. Great shower with good hot water.
A delicious and varied breakfast. Not a buffet but instead a platter of various delights such as fruit, yogurt, cheese, pastries, homemade jams etc, changes each day and served on the terrace. All with a vast range of teas. There is a glass enclosed pergola/lounge which is used if the weather is not cooperating.
The village is an ideal base for exploring this fascinating area and the owners have a wealth of advice and information. Dinner is available on request at the hotel or there are a number of good tavernas recommended within a 20 minutes drive.
Tanya keeps a close eye on running this lovely hotel. Well recommended.

Simply loved this place. So different, so nice, so relaxing and such a lovely family who run this hotel. Mani is a different type of place to visit, maybe not with exciting night life etc., however, it has an atmosphere which is quite different, unique and welcoming. We left Athens for a weekend to relax and this was probably the best ever place to relax. No stress, the family welcomed us, 2 colleagues, for the weekend and after that everything just clicked. Food was first class, drinks, and in particular the wine selection is fantastic, and overall the whole atmosphere was just perfect. Breakfast, lunch and dinners in such a relaxing and quaint place were fantastic. Rooms are very nicely done with modern facilities whilst maintaining the old style. Classy place well worth a visit or two. We shall return later this year hopefully for a long weekend, all going well.

It is exclusively for the guests that stay at the Tower house, guests at the hotel do not have access.
Thank you
C dei N is in Koita, which also has a small "supermarket" and that's it. It is not on the coast so no beach to walk to. As far as I know, there are no hikes originating in Koita itself. We had a car, which is certainly easiest for the Peloponnese. There is a bus stop on the main road passing through Koita and I did see locals waiting there. You should write to the owners of C dei N about staying without a car; they will advise you. The guidebook I have with the most bus information is Lonely Planet. It describes where you must change buses to go from Athens to different parts of the Pelop, as well as bus info for some parts of the Mani. You may want to get some topo maps to find a base (with a beach?) that has many walks originating. Also, you can probably arrange taxis to take you to a point where you want to spend the day.
An example of a place with hikes originating from it is Kardamyli, including short hike from old Kardamyli to Agia Sophia church, longer tougher loop through the Vyros gorge, long loop through Exochori, etc. It is closer to Kalamata (which has an airport), has lots of accomodation and lots of restaurants. Other towns in that stretch with beaches and facilities are Stoupa and Agios Nikolaos. We stayed in an isolated spot between Kardamyli and Stoupa, between two beaches Foneas and Delphini, neither of which is very safely accessible walking on the main road but there would likely be a bus (or taxi).
Examples of beaches in the vicinity of Koita that we went to: beach north of Diros Caves but reached through Charia on switchback road through olive groves, beaches at Mezapos, beach at Cape Tenaro. There is a nice looking beach at Marmari that we did not go to. We drove through Gerolimenas which looked like a nice little town; there are several hotels and restaurants and it is on the water - a possible base. Vathia, which is an interesting site, is about 15 km from there (likely there is a bus through it) and Cape Tenaro another 15 or so. Don't know if bus would go all the way to Cape T or what the frequency of any of these buses would be. There look to be many hikes between Marmari and Cape T. Also could hike from Vathia to some of the other tower ruins in the area.
I hope this helps but best to consult the Citta dei Nicliani owners, who are very helpful. Regarding Athens, you don't want a car! Easy to walk to many sites and tram or metro for others. Metro easy for both airport and port of Piraeus. In Athens, Psyrri is a wonderful neighbourhood to stay, even if it looks sketchy!
A car is essential, this is a remote region and you will need transport to reach the hotel and then to get to tavernas, beaches and other towns and villages in the region.
