This motel provided for us ample living space, a warm environment including efficient under floor heating and comfortable bedding and bed. It also had a functional recently renovated kitchen and was central to walking trails and attractions. It was clean and quiet and hence all our basic needs were well met. Our rating 3.5 - but with potential for higher.

However, there were disappointing features. Maintenance, safety and presentation was extremely poor, with external timber work and gardens needing urgent attention – especially around the pool area.

In a world where first impressions are important, the owner needs to support management by making some immediate improvements. For example, steps leading to the main office need attention. They would fail any Occupational Health and Safety tests – eg no guard rail, no landing area and all steps greater than 150 mm in height.

The pokey office didn’t fill us with confidence either. If we hadn’t pre-booked, we would have been tempted to drive on.

For all that, we found the management welcoming and helpful, and we enjoyed our stay. While the basic service and accommodation elements are in place, we encourage the owner to took closely at the presentation and maintenance of facilities.

We stayed 4 night in a first class semi detached cabin with large sitting, dining kitchen area, laundry with wasing machine, wet room and separate bedroom. Underfloor heating throughout, well furnished, loads of wardrobe space, Skye TV and fully fitted kitchen with oven, hob, fridge and microwave. The owners were friendly, the accomodation very clean, the site was spacious with picnic areas and Arrow town itself a really attractive place.

We spent three nights in the motel.. We had a room with a super king size bed it was very comfortable, as were the pillows. The unit was very clean and tidy and well appointed. The decor slightly dated but don't let this worry you. Suitable for all travellers.

My husband and 9 year old child stayed here for 2 nights to use as our base for our activities in Queenstown which for us was a much quieter option than staying in Queenstown itself. The room which was on 2 levels was clean, roomy and well appointed with a good sized kitchen. Being only a short drive away from Queenstown Arrowtown is a very pretty and historical town which is well worth a visit and also has a good lolly shop.

Selected this motel to be out of the hustle/hype of Queenstown and was very happy with both the quality and price. It was a well set out 1 bedroom unit. Easy parking. There is quick access to the village of Arrowtown and the "bright lights" of Queenstown are only a 15/20 minute drive away. The management is friendly, helpful and efficient.

The units are large and spacious however they are very basic and hard to find. Arrowtown is not a great place for street signs so can be quite confusing for visitors. The shower was cold, it took about 5 minutes for the hot water to start flowing. And the sliding door kept coming off it tracks, a good place for a night or two but I wouldn't choose to stay here again.

Street signage is the responsibility of the QLDC and yes Arrowtown can be confusing for visitors unfortunately we are unable to influence the location or quantity of the street signs. Free maps are, however, available in the office. I'm not sure what was meant by "very basic" as all the units are provided with full kitchen including stove/range, fridge freezer, microwave, washing machine and 50+ Sky channels. Apologies for the problem you experienced with the shower, although we have not previously been told of this issue, we appreciate being informed of any problems which then allows us to rectify them.

I have seen in an article that this motel has four and a half stars.
It either needs a complete refurbishment or demolish and start again.
I have been told the units are privately owned and a Manager is on site. She appears to work hard but owners do not want to spend money.
A lingering smell, holes on the stairs carpet and lighting so bad it was impossible to read.

Thank you for your thoughts on Arrowtown Viking Lodge Motel, the fact you were undoubtedly disappointed is to say the least, upsetting for us. We have never pretended to be a 4.5 star motel and are qualmark rated "3.5 stars", yes the carpet on the stairs is worn but hardly in holes and is due for replacement during the off season this year. Lighting.... we were using low energy bulbs as part of our sustainable energy vision, but have now replaced them with LED bulbs which have made difference. Unfortunately, sometimes there are lingering cooking smells left by previous guests we do our best to eliminate them, but obviously in this instance we didn't succeed, possibly, if we had been informed we could have offered an alternative unit. My apologies for your disappointment.

We stayed in the studio unit which was roomy, with a separate bedroom. Clean and tidy and has a heated floor. There is also a washing machine in the unit, so you only have to use the dryer in the laundry room. A very nice quiet location that is not too far from the main street of Arrowtown.
