So we needed a bit of a change after lockdown and decided to visit Fernando in his retreat up in the mountains. It’s not a hotel by the way, it’s a guesthouse. The location is off the grid and you meet Fernando in a local town and he leads you up into the reserve. I recommend a 4x4 or a robust car as the road quickly becomes a track. Nothing too heavy, but definitely not for low riders. The place itself is wonderfully isolated. The power comes from solar, and the water comes from the mountains. But it has WiFi and the usual comforts of home too. The rooms are simple, clean and welcoming. They all have these cool mosquito blinds on the windows which keep the room bug free but allow the light and air in. Very Spanish vibe, lots of wood and our room had its own shower and wash basin with lavatory next door. The water is hot and place feels well cared for. But we didn’t come here to be pampered, we came here to clear our heads and reconnect a bit with nature. And this is where La Peña Cortijo comes into its own. Fernando tools us for a couple of treks in the amazing wilderness and the views are simply breathtaking. He also offers yoga in the morning and cooks the most fantastic food. He even gave us a class on cooking with chilli :) So overall, I recommend La Peña Cortijo for anyone looking to escape, unwind, do some yoga, east excellent food or just wake up to fresh air and a mountain view. We will be back soon I hope.…
