My brother and his husband were visiting us here in Auckland, NZ from bonnie Scotland. My wife and I wanted to show them beautiful Hawkes Bay while they were here and were very fortunate to find Hawthorne House when searching for boutique luxury accommodation in the region. And what a find it was!
From the minute we pulled into the tree-line driveway leading up to this beautiful, character Edwardian villa we knew we had found something special. We were greeted at the door by Peter who offered us the warmest of welcomes; he proceeded to share his and Paul's passioned story of their labour of love that is Hawthorne House.
The grounds are beautifully designed with bird song coming in every direction, and it was a joy to see wild rabbits hopping free around the outer grounds. Inside awaits an abundance of wonderfully curated artworks and pieces; you don't know where to look first. Stunning! My wife and I being designers ourselves found our stay very inspiring; we felt we had arrived! The bedrooms themselves are tastefully decorated and themed, again with stunning artworks adorning the walls, and very plush and comfortable.
But it's not just the accommodation itself that you will surely love, it's the warmth of your hosts, Peter and Paul. Never have we stayed anywhere around the world where we were treated to such a memorable stay. They shared wonderful stories with us and there was much jovial laughter. Their local knowledge is incredible and there is nothing they wouldn't do for you. Oh, and their breakfasts are yummy! They were even able to get us a wine tasting and dinner booking at Craggy Range vineyard and restaurant even though it was fully booked online, and what a wonderful night that was!
Hawthorne House is like one big warm hug; you won't want to let go of it. We left feeling like we were leaving family. We will most certainly be spreading the word about this wonderful place - here in NZ, and my brother and his husband back in Scotland and the UK. We can say without a shadow of a doubt – WE WILL BE BACK! Thank you Peter and Paul, for opening up your home to us; we had the most wonderful, memorable stay. We truly loved our Hawkes Bay-cation! We will see you again soon!

We had two luxurious nights at Hawthorne House end restored and appointed and decorated by Peter and Paul. Our welcome by Paul started our adventure. Everything is quality and taste. Our spacious room has an ensuite with heated floor and towel rails and all bits and pieces you need in a bathroom. Snacks, teas and coffee, complentary wines and beer and apple juice. Very comfortable bed and good pillows. Dressing gowns...and this is just our room and verandah! Breakfast is a feast of locally grown and produced products, their own eggs, linen, crystal, silver. And you have the use of a most gracious and delightfully lit living room full of art. Paintings, sculptures, objets de vertu. Music softly in the background...sweet classical for breakfast and cafe style jazz in the evening. Peter and Paul are charismatic, anxious to please, amusing, professional and friendly. The welcoming sunset drinks first night with another couple staying we had vague associations with years ago (this is New Zealand after all) completed the holiday atmosphere. Thoroughly recommend this treasure. Best to have a big lunch or wine tour in the daytime and relax here in the evening is our suggestion. Top marks for every thoughtful thing Peter and Paul!

We stayed here with Peter and Paul in 2020 and found the place so heavenly that we organised our North Island itinerary around being able to stay there again. We were not disappointed (only when we were leaving). The place is an oasis of calm and peacefulness. Peter and Paul are the perfect hosts and nothing is too much trouble. They recommend places to eat, vineyards to visit and we were fortunate that there were new guests each day we stayed so were invited to the welcoming drinks gathering at 17.30 each day with a variety of wines and homemade canapes. The rooms are luxurious and the lounge is the perfect place to have that nightcap drink. Breakfast produce is all local and absolutely delicious. Who couldn't enjoy a stay here? We wish we could come here every year.

Our very first two-night stay in Hawthorne House boutique B&B, with fabulous art, was simply superb. Peter and Paul were the most charming and attentive of hosts whose communication on all the little things that need sorting was, in our experience, without equal. From arranging the taxi service for us home after dinner out to an extra hottie, nothing was a problem and was delivered with warmth. We are already talking about our next visit.

If you want a deluxe getaway in a rural setting with every comfort provided, Hawthorne House is ideal. Our Hosts Pete and Paul have decorated this elegant spacious house with stunning art works and artefacts and yet have retained a welcoming and homely atmosphere. Breakfast was a highlight served in an outdoor setting with delicious homemade and local products showcased in a healthy and nutritious spread. The manicured garden is a peaceful vista offering a perfect setting for sheer relaxation. They were keen to offer excellent suggestions for restaurants, coffee stops and myriad activities in their beautiful neighbourhood of Napier. The heart and soul of hospitable New Zealand can be found here.

Hawthorne House From the moment we arrived at Hawthorn House we knew we had made the right decision.Greeted by our Hosts Peter & Paul we knew we would enjoy our time here. We were shown to our room which was more like a luxury suite in a 5* hotel with a complimentary bar with a variety of snacks. our bathroom was well equiped with an excellent artisan range of sulphate and paraben free, shampoo, conditioner, body wash and hand wash free fast wifi.
Breakfast was an experience of the best local produce available w organic NZ teas. Museli the best ever so we put in an order with their supplier. Croissants the best this side of France. The cooked breakfast had a great choice and cooked to perfection, up there with the finest 5* hotels.
We will be back again for a restful break.

It is a big old house in spacious grounds not far from Hastings and Havelock North. Peter and Paul who own it and were our hosts bring a very high level of commitment to keeping guests happy and contented.
Our room was spacious with all the stuff you expect, and a bit more, which included a nice range of drinks and snacks that were covered in the room rate. As usual they didn't quite complete the trifecta of sufficient luggage rack space, effective bedside lights, and enough shelf space in the ensuite, but they got close. (Shelf space was a bit constructed.) It was a nice room and we slept well. The guest lounge was a highlight and if you stay here make sure you get the stories behind the artworks here.
The welcoming drinks on the first night were fun and generous. The breakfasts covered all we could want and I particularly liked the Zealong tea. There are more than enough very good restaurants within a short drive and the availability of a limousine service was great.
Hawthorne House was a very good experience and has to be highly recommended.

Hi Dennis Thanks for this great review! It was lovely to have you both here at Hawthorne House and we're so glad you enjoyed your stay so much. We're thrilled we got close to the trifecta - two out of three is a lot better than none out of three! There is always a tension between providing glasses, tissues, sanitary bags, shower caps, makeup remover, cotton wool buds, spare toilet rolls, facecloths, hand sanitiser, tooth brush holders AND enough shelf space in ensuite bathrooms for guests and their own toiletries. But we're up for the challenge and on your next visit we will see if we can surprise and delight you and win this elusive trifecta!! We loved sharing the stories of our art collection with you all and glad that you enjoyed the welcome drinks and Zealong teas selection, the limousine service and the local restaurants and wineries. We look forward to your return visit to Hawthorne House. Cheers Peter and Paul

What a lovely home and an absolute pleasure to stay there. The house is so tastefully and beautifully furnished and the hosts, Peter and Paul, are fabulous! Welcome drinks and canapés were great and, if staying for more than one night, could be enjoyed again the following evening! And as for the breakfasts - superb! (rather a lot of exclamation marks, but all thoroughly deserved) Recommended unequivocally

My husband and I can’t say enough about this lovely house experience. Can’t call it a B & B because it is oh so much more. Made to order breakfasts are delicious/ fresh, warm croissants, homemade jams and marmalades, fresh eggs from their chickens and a menu that details where every local ingredient is sourced. A big plus is the eclectic, fascinating art that is in every room as well as outside in their expansive garden. They are true collectors and it shows.A pleasure learning something about their passions and the local artists. They also had invaluable dining and touring tips and so helpful in making or changing plans. They clearly go the extra mile- including shipping some shoes I forgot to our next location!! Truly a memorable experience- one I would repeat with no hesitation! Kathy
