Loved staying here, peace and tranquility, beautiful gardens surround the property. It’s a bit of an architectural masterpiece and so enjoyable to experience the open plan living, multi aspects and lots of natural light. We were supplied with perfect breakfast ingredients, fab home made bread and muesli, fruits , home made jams etc. Located but the river walk, you could have a pleasant stroll into town in 10 or 15 minutes . We drove to Te Mata peak one evening with very big views and finally visited Ocean Beach for an exilerating swim in the surf

We had our wedding a John's House. We invited 27 people, we all had lunch seated inside and then in the afternoon we enjoyed live music outside in the gardens. All the wedding guests commented on the location and peaceful surroundings, and our wedding photos look so beautiful with the trees and gardens in the background.
Our hosts were amazing! They were so accommodating, generous and helpful. They made us feel like nothing was a problem. We thoroughly enjoyed Judy's bottled fruit and homemade muesli, and Nick made us a fire on the evening of our arrival and even cooked us a delicious beef roll for our wedding lunch!
We wanted something a bit different for our wedding, and our special day at John's House surpassed our expectations. The wedding was intimate, beautiful and relaxed.
A huge thank you to Nick and Judy!

We were really happy you could have such a special day at John's House. A small daytime wedding on the shortest day of the year was certainly an unusual event, and your beautiful photos reflected the happy occasion.Thank you, - and Nick enjoyed using his charcoal barbecue!

The Pavillion is a wonderful place to stay in Havelock North. House is perfect for couples, breakfast food supplied which was great. On a large piece of land, very quiet and peaceful. Location to township fantastic, just a short stroll, 5 minutes, from Havelock village. Close to wineries and beaches. Nick is a fantastic host, we even left with a bag full of lemons and masses of mint from garden.

The hosts were lovely but the pavilion was a bit quirky for our tastes. Really counting on the wifi to hunker down and watch the U.S. election returns so were extremely disappointed to find wifi not working. I'm sure it would be perfect for most travelers but was not a good fit for us.

Response from Nick P, Owner at John's House & The Pavilion
Responded 18 Nov 2016
Thank you for staying and taking the time to write your review - we appreciate that. We understand that some people may find Pete Bossley's award winning architecture challenging - most guests absolutely rave about it. We also think that the photographs on our website and other booking platforms accurately portray The Pavilion and environs. The wi-fi feed comes from our other guest accommodation - John's House - and the signal recently became compromised by emerging spring foliage. We have subsequently installed a new roof mounted wireless system to obviate this problem.

John's House combines our two favourite things - cool architecture (John Scott is Hawkes Bay's most famous son) and great hospitality. From the handy welcoming directions, the beaut home-made bread and jams, fresh herbs and lemons to pick for breakfast eggs and juice, to the welcoming wood fire and comfiest beds, we were pampered by Nick and Judy. With such a well set up kitchen, we abandoned any dinner booking, shopped at Havelock Bellitino's and stayed in by the fire. Neat decor, books and memorabilia from John's flying days made this even more personable. The riverside walk/bike trail makes this spot brilliantly handy to the best of the Bay's attractions.

Inspired architecture is timeless and John's House 24 years on still surprises and delights. My father who lived here for 20 years described it as like 'living in a work of art'.

We found John’s House online then checked TripAdvisor reviews before booking for 5 days. We weren’t disappointed. This house has true architectural character, a really interesting history and a very special ambiance. It is beautifully decorated with comfortable beds and furniture and everything you might need for a self catering stay. The house is situated in its own green grass gardens, surrounded by colourful plants and beautiful trees – the hiss of the sprinkler during hot days was so relaxing. We also enjoyed delving into the book cases near the front door and sometimes found it difficult to leave the patio and do the tourist trails nearby. John’s House is situated just minutes between Havelock North and Hastings but also close for visiting Napier and the Hawke’s Bay wineries. The owners Nick and Judy supply fabulous goodies for breakfast including home made muesli, preserves and fresh fruit from the gardens. Nick was specially helpful and knowledgeable about restaurants and tourist spots - if only we could have dragged ourselves away from the house more often! If you are considering this property, don’t hesitate – it really casts a magical spell.

It is not often that a vacation rental is also an architectural gem. John's House truly lives up to its website description. We enjoyed 5 days of bliss and could have stayed for more. The house, the hosts, and the setting are all excellent and there is the added attraction of the four legged residents in the paddock for our entertainment. For anyone who likes to cycle get a bike from Village Cycles and Tours in Havelock North and go explore the wonderful bike paths and wineries!

We stayed at John's house recently attending a friends wedding in Havelock North. We were a family of four with two extra adults. We couldn't have had a more pleasant experience. The house is on a farm with cows, pigs, and alpacas. All of us, especially the kids, thoroughly enjoyed the experience!! The highlight though was the hospitality of the owner, who was very helpful from the date of the booking throughout our entire stay! He was especially great with our kids! Would highly recommend John's house if you ever have a chance to go to this beautiful part of the country.

We had a large group at John's House without any problems. It is a nice spacious property with beautiful garden - it is lovely seeing the animals over the fence too : ) An airbed was inflated and dressed for us and breakfast was provided including homemade muesli and fresh milk from the cows. We felt so spoilt! I loved all the art, photos and books around the place, it is so homely - the guest book showed that even Ian McKellan (Lord of the Rings) had enjoyed a stay there! It is so peaceful and quiet making it so easy to relax there. We had planned to go out on one of the evenings but found that we liked hanging out at the house so it was a night in for all : )
We booked an On Yer Bike winery tour so we got a shuttle to the main office. This was about $50. If you take your own car then you have the freedom to get anywhere across the Hawkes Bay from John's House. We went to the Sunday market at the Racecourse which is very close by. The only negative I would say is that there wasn't an iPod dock or other music facility. I would highly recommend John's House for a relaxing weekend in the Bay.
