Detailed Reviews
I See the cottage is also listed as Jandal cottage through Bachcare. The cottage was lovely and we stayed for three nights. We Found the cottage had everything we needed. We took the booking because it included a pet friendly allowance. We took our small well-behaved dog and as we arrived the person who was obviously in charge of the cottages said our cottage did not allow dogs. He agreed it was okay for us to stay as our dog was part of the booking but he said it would be the last dog as there had been a bad experience with a previous animal. I am happy to say we left the place as we found it except for some cleaning in the kitchen. The cleaning cost was not cheap and there would have been very little to do once we left.
Unfortunately, the welcome package appeared to be left out and we had trouble with no Wi-Fi and TV instructions. We needed the Wi-Fi for a medical device my husband wears. The package had been put on the shelf above the fridge and not on a table where we would see it. Then the time getting through to Bachcare. It was a repetition of the same efforts we made prior to taking up the about booking in getting hold of them.
Many phone calls messages and an email were unanswered. Finally got through to an obviously overworked operator who helped with our enquiry. Automated email messages came through very well. However getting through to them on the phone is a nightmare and for that reason we would never deal with them again.

Second time we have visited and highly recommend Russell Cottages for a family break.
We stayed in a three bedroom cottage which was clean, spacious and comfortable.
The kids love the pool and it's a quick walk to the beach.
Russell is lovely, as is Paihia close by.

We were pleasantly surprised to find such spacious and well appointed cottages for the price, admittedly on a Grab One deal. Only minor criticism relating to design is that with such a large footprint the downstairs bathroom could have been larger. Spa and pool are great. Really comfortable 3 nights.

This used to be our favourite place to stay in Russell up until our most recent visit. It’s gone under new management since last time we stayed and they’ve made some changes for the worst. The prices have gone way up, yet nothing has been improved In the cottages. The carpets are worn, furnishings are dated and they have replaced the nice small toiletries for a box unit on the wall filled with cheap dispensable soaps. On a busy weekend in Russell , where every other accommodation was fully booked there were no other guests at the Russell cottages apart from us, and now I know why.

Response from Anna McGahan, Marketing at Russell Cottages

Hello Madeline Thank you for your feedback which has been noted. Please note that the cottages are not under new management. Soap dispensers (more expensive) have been installed as an environmental consideration to reduce waste. We are continually upgrading and, new curtains and blinds, a WiFi upgrade, new crockery & cutlery, upgrade of Sky network now providing a multitude of TV channels, new pool furniture, new speed bumps for safety, parking lines added, have been just some of the recent improvements which our many returning guests are noticing and enjoying. We hope to see you back one day. Regards Russell Cottages

We booked a cottage for New Year and on the day we flew to NZ (3 weeks after we made the booking) we were advised the owners wished to use the property and we would have to find an alternative. Totally unprofessional and unhelpful, didn't even offer to help us find an alternative.

These two storey cottages were wonderful for a family holiday. Russell is a hidden treasure in the Bay of Islands, well worth visiting. Natalie was a wonderful host - travel in winter and you will have run of the place, and at great prices! Snuggle up to cosy fireplace at night and take in the serenity.

Cottage prewarmed for us with heater, then we got the gas log fire on- splendid! Kept the whole cottage nice and cosy.
High quality decor, linens, fixtures and fittings. The cottages are very pretty, decorated with stye and well equipped. Everything was clean and fresh.
A short walk to the lovely village of Russell with handy shops and ovely scenery.
Would definately stay again.

We stayed for 3 nights at the Cottages. The units are gorgeous, huge space, nice bedrooms, living room, gas fireplace. We had an issue with the cleaning though - when we arrived the dishwasher was full of dirty dishes and smelled like something was dead inside for a month or so. Towels were not changed - not even those left in the bathtub. Everything else was clean and overall we were happy during our stay We didn't touch the dishwasher or anything inside - we used whatever dishes were available in the cupboard and washed them by hand.
A separate issue - WiFi. We booked through hotels.com and there was mentioned 'free WiFi". There's no such thing as free WiFi at Russell Cottages - we raised this with reception and we were reluctantly given a $10 voucher valid 7 days for 100MB of data (pathetic by any standards and extremely expensive). This would have been fine if it would have worked for more than two emails - it expired after less than 30 mins of NO activity (far less than the 100MB, maybe 1 or 2MB at the very best) so if you end up buying these access vouchers make sure you get what you pay for. There's an Internet cafe within walking distance though.
A word of warning - this is a NZ property. This means the bedrooms are COLD in winter (Apr to Sept) and the only heating provided is in the form of electric blankets. This makes the bed cozy, but the rest of the bedroom stays at a crispy 13-14 deg Celsius (some 56 deg Fahrenheit). The local kiwis are generally happy with this, however if you visit from some other more civilized country where you prefer your bedroom at a more normal 18-20 deg Celsius you better come in summer as there's no way you can warm up the bedrooms.

Booked a 3 bedroom cottage for our family (7 in total) for 3 nights in May. Large living area with quality furniture and kitchen was very well equipped.Rooms very were comfortable and good quality linen are used. Very good location - close to the main street in Russell. Our cottage was serviced every day and did find service from Reception was very good (and friendly). Kids loved the pool (heated to about 30 degrees) and the adults enjoyed the spa pool!
All and all an excellent stay - If you want to take out-of-towners to a special place try Rusell Cottages!

Russell Cottages are clean and well maintained. It isa complex of about 20 other cottages. We rented a 1 bedroom apartment - very spacious which is really part of a larger cottage which contains 3 other bedrooms -these are locked up when not in use. This place would be ideal for a family or couples travelling together. When we arrived reception had closed - it is only open 9-5, so an envelope with keys and instructions was left taped to the reception door. We never saw the receptionist the entire time we were there. When we arrived it was quite cold but she left lights on and a small heater. We had to put the gas fire place on though to fully warm the place. There were two large lounge chairs to sit on, a dining table which could seat at least 6. There is plenty of cutlery, cooking utensils for self catering. The pantry lights up when the door is opened. There is a dishwasher, full size fridge and stove with 4 hotplates. There is a washing machine as well. There are lots of windows in the apartment which makes it light and airy. There is a verandah with a table and chairs for outdoor dining - at least it faced a garden, other apartments faced the road - not very private. There was a pool which was coered when we were there and a spa. The bedroom was big enough but it had a gabled roof - so if you don't watch where you are going, especially if going to the bathroom at night you will most certainly bang your head, as my partner did. We ended moving the bed to avoid this.
When we went it was obviously low travel period, so we got the place at a very reasonable price $NZ155 per night). I would imagine that in peak times, prices would be quite expensive.
Downside:
1. dreaded internet connection - here goes:
NZ$5=1 hour capped at 10mb
NZ$10=2 hours capped at 50mb
NZ$24.95=24 hours capped ant 1 gb
You need to contact reception to log in with a password. We did not use the internet connection.
2. A bit out of the way. You need to catch a car ferry at Opua if you want to travel to other Bay of Islands places such as Paihia, Keri Keri etc. Cost is NZ$11 plus NZ$1 per passenger one way. It leaves very frequently - every 10-15 minutes. There were always cars on the ferry. This starts to add up if you do this for a few days but the alternative it is take a road to Kawakawa via Waihaha (basically travel on the road to Whangarei and turn off after about 10km) which is about 40km.15km is dirt road and very windy and not wise to take in wet weather. There is a passenger ferry that leaves from Russell Wharf to go to Paihia.
