Awesome place to stay. Spacious, clean and a short drive from Russell centre. Situated at the quieter Topeka Point and beach side. Covid level changes meant last minute amendments and the host was really accommodating and went out of their way to alter our booking. Definitely a brilliant place to stay when in Russell or even Paihia as that’s only a 5-10min ferry trip across the water.

Kokomo Retreat is a 3 minute drive from Russell village. We stayed in the Kiwiana 2 bedroom unit and were very impressed. The accommodation is immaculately clean, very well furnished with a good layout & lovely little bits of décor personalizing it. There is a fully equipped kitchen & nice little touch was being provided with fresh milk for a few days, coffee, tea and biscuits. Also has a good choice of music, Sky channels and games for those rainy, indoor days. The location is incredibly quiet, and it was the best sleep I’ve had in months. The facility offers a shared hot tub (which we didn’t use) located with a stunning view over the ocean. It also offers the use of kayaks and has direct access to the beach which was awesome. Russell is considered a kiwi area, and one of the highlights of staying at Kokomo, was my husband was very fortunate to see a kiwi (not a weka) running down the road late one evening! We have a small dog and were a little concerned we would be put into an apartment that smelled of other dogs or was not as nice as other non-dog friendly accommodation, but this was not the case at all. Our dog was made to feel very welcome and the apartment smelled fresh and clean. Dave and Anita have a huge amount of pride in their property, and it was lovely to meet Dave in person. He was super friendly and very informative and we will most definitely be back to enjoy their hospitality again. Don’t miss out on a fabulous home away from home.

If you are scrolling through here looking for possible places to stay in the Bay of Islands; stop right here! We had the most amazing couple of nights at Dave and Anita’s place - the only tough thing was leaving! The studio is beautiful with more than you’ll ever need and the view from the garden is breathtaking. The hot tub is the perfect place for your breakfast cuppa, watching out for dolphins in the bay. We spotted some on our first morning, leaping behind a boat, so we shot down to the beach and into the (complimentary!) kayak to join the whole pod for half an hour of pure joy. Just us and around 15 dolphins with their young, dipping and diving under and around us, it was the most magical experience and has totally made our honeymoon - and we were only on day 3! Even if you don’t see the dolphins it will still be one of the highlights of your trip staying here - the hospitality and friendliness of the hosts is second to none and the studio is spotless and really well equipped.

We had a great 3 night break in this apartment. The location is great with easy access to small quiet beach and the use of Kayaks. The host was friendly, helpful and easily contacted. The apartment was well equipped comfortable and clear with fantastic views of the Bay of Island from the deck. You need a car to get into Russell but we knew that and it was an easy short drive.

The short five minute drive northwards from bustling Russell, takes you up and over Flagstaff Hill and affords stunning views of The Bay of Islands. Jo & Murray’s property sits at the head of a quiet residential cul de sac, lined with contemporary designer properties. Jo is a charming host and immediately puts you at your ease. Murray, we sadly didn’t get chance to meet. The apartment has been stylishly furnished to a high standard. The pervading theme is one of elegant tranquility and the only distraction is the surf rolling on the beach below, or the occasional call of a weka. There’s access to a shared private beach, from which you can launch one of the kayaks. Tide and sea conditions permitting. There’s also a small public beach with fine white sand just at the bottom of the road. Another great find...
