Thanks for the 5 Stars Anne, we are pleased you loved your stay. We think the one special thing is that we don't live in the actual lodge, but right next door, guests get the freedom to relax and unwind and yet we are close enough to help and give the best advice we can. Hopefully, we might see you back with us sometime in the future Thanks so much and take care, Peter & Greg

We booked at very short notice because we were not satisfied in the last hotel. However, Peter and Greg immediately provided us with a beautiful free room for two days. After a warm welcome and an extremely interesting tour of the house and the history of Russell we felt directly welcome and comfortable.

The accommodation itself is a real highlight: lovingly run, stylish and quality furnishings and very clean. Peter and Greg are outstanding hosts who run their bed and breakfast with a lot of passion. Their recommendations on restaurants and excursion destinations were worth gold and made our stay perfect.

Breakfast was one of the best we ever had: very creative, varied and prepared with fresh ingredients from our own garden. Greg explained each component in detail and made sure any allergies or intolerances were taken into account. This breakfast was really a pleasure!

The atmosphere at Arcadia Lodge was particularly warm and familiar on every day. On the first day, there were only four guests, on the second day there were eight – each time the atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming. We would have liked to have stayed longer, but unfortunately the lodge was already fully booked at the start of the season, as there is only room for a maximum of 12-14 guests.

Arcadia Lodge is a wonderful place that is definitely worth visiting – especially for those who value a personal atmosphere, high quality and hospitality. We can highly recommend this property when visiting the Bay of Islands. Thanks to Peter and Greg for this special stay!

We would definitely come back!

We stayed for 3 nights in Arcadia Lodge to kick off our NZ tour and wish we had stayed longer! Greg and Peter were fantastic hosts, very attentive and accommodating to our late arrival and early boat tour - even pushing their breakfast earlier so that we could still enjoy it (thankfully so as it was plentiful and absolutely fabulous - I am still dreaming of the Jamaican ginger cake!)
The room we stayed in was extremely spacious and emaculatley clean and I loved the personal and historic touches throughout the rooms and entire house. The access to the kitchen facilities (including wine selection) and living space was a lovely added extra. Greg's welcome and friendliness made it an extremely easy stay with no concerns of asking too many questions or having queries coupled with Peter's varying, fresh and creative breakfasts - I really do hope to visit again in the future to experience more of what they, and Russell, have to offer.

The only words do describe this 100 year old abode is charming, welcoming and warm. From the moment we arrived hosts Peter and Greg did whatever they could with great ease to make us feel at home. The property up on a hillside is surrounded by a bay on two sides where gentle waves roll lazily up on the low flat sand beach below. White picket fences align the garden with an easy walkway into town a mere 6 minute walk away. The neighborhood is quiet and idyll. Our room on the first floor was lovely with a front parlor looking out onto the bay. Be aware that the floor boards creak as would be expected in a house of this age. Peter whips up a gourmet hot breakfast differing daily along with fresh fruit, homemade granolas and yogurt. This place is a win for sure. If you are coming to the area I recommend staying in Russell rather than Paihia across the bay. It feels a bit less commercial or crowded and the ferry is a 12 minute romp to the other side.

Hi Nancy, we are a little bit biased as we also think that Russell is just a bit special and differs quite a lot being NZ's first capital town, just a flat walk around the corner from us. We are looking forward to celebrating 100 years of guest hosting this coming year which is quite a milestone. Thank you so much for sharing your lovely review of us. All the very best Peter & Greg.

Our stay at Arcadia Lodge exceeded our expections and then some! We stayed in the Matariki Suite, not because we needed two bedrooms but because of the on-suite bathroom and the sitting room overlooking Matauwhi Bay. The rooms were cozily decorated, with nice touches like stained glass windows, wood carvings, and tapestries. The bathroom was adequate size and nicely stocked. The room was freshened every day, and since we were staying a week, bedding and towels were changed on the 3rd day.

As we arrived right before Cyclone Gabrielle, we spent more time in the common rooms than we might have otherwise. So comfortable, from the dining room to the sitting room to the spacious wraparound porch, again overlooking the Bay. We had access to a full kitchen, including coffee, tea, home-made cookies, and curated wine available for purchase. The lodge also has a nice backyard potager garden and a luscious ornamental garden in front.

The highlight of these lodgings, however, are your hosts, Peter and Greg. Upon check-in, Greg gave us a history of the house, and marked a map with directions to local sights and restaurants. They are anxious to make sure you have everything you need. During the cyclone, they made sure we were aware of what was going on with electric and roads and groceries.

And did I mention the breakfasts? Peter's daily spread of cereal/yogurt, hot meal, and bread basket is to die for!

We were comfortable and well fed and inspired by the beauty around us. We arrived as strangers, and left feeling like we were friends. Thank you Peter and Greg!

We stayed two nights at Arcadia Lodge and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Every aspect of our stay was first class. The hosts Peter and Greg were very accommodating and quality of the accommodation was very impressive with an eye for detail. The breakfasts provided were also amazing and we would highly recommend Arcadia Lodge to anyone else considering a stay in Russell.

Many thanks

We are two couples travelling together, so we booked Arcadia Cottage. I’d seen some photos and read some reviews, but nothing quite prepared me for how wonderful Arcadia Lodge is. Peter and Greg are the ultimate hosts, incredibly warm and welcoming, and their attention to detail is evident everywhere. Peter’s breakfasts are exquisite. We stayed in beautiful Russell for 4 days, and it was difficult to leave! Highly recommended.

We think we offer a pretty great stay and pleased it met your expectations - job done !! Have a great Autumn and hopefully we might see you pop over the ditch again to stay. Peter & Greg

My Partner Colin and I have just spent 4 nights at Arcadia Lodge as part of a road trip exploration of the Far North. Each day was a full one, but every day we reveled in the knowledge that we would be returning to Arcadia Lodge, which began to feel very much like 'coming home' to be with kindly, interesting relatives.
Greg and Peter, the owners and our hosts, have created a stunning "home away from home" for travelers and we admired their attention to detail in every way - from the presentation and variety of their delicious breakfasts enjoyed with a view of the bay below; to the furnishings chosen with care to suit the character of each suite of rooms; to the personal greeting at the end of each day; to their attitude that nothing was any trouble and last, to the quality of their recommendations regarding local restaurants, galleries, cafes, activities, museums and galleries.
I know I am "waxing lyrical" about Greg and Peter's Arcadia Lodge, but it is a rare find in a sea of ordinary accommodation options.
We wish them well, we will be recommending Arcadia Lodge to friends and family and we will be returning!
Melanie

Our stay at Arcadia Lodge was lovely and I honestly didn’t want to leave. The lodge itself is beautiful, with gorgeous kauri wood floors, a balcony that looked out on a bay, a cheerful kitchen garden, and stunning views. Peter and Greg, our incredible hosts, made the experience unforgettable.

Peter’s culinary creations were a highlight of each morning—everything he prepared was fresh, flavorful, and thoughtful. From fruits harvested straight from the garden to savory crêpes, homemade crumpets, and chocolate hazelnut croissants, every meal felt like a warm hug. Greg was a wealth of knowledge, always ready with spot-on suggestions and advice for the day’s adventures, adding so much to our trip.

Our room was a peaceful retreat, with a comfortable bed and a sitting room with an expansive window that quickly became our favorite spot to enjoy a cool ocean breeze, drink pots of cozy tea, and eat homemade cookies you could help yourself to at any time. The soothing sounds of birdsong and the peaceful atmosphere made every moment here feel like vacation.

Russell itself is a delightful town—quiet, picturesque, and the perfect place to unwind and soak in the beauty of New Zealand’s Bay of Islands. Arcadia Lodge and its incredible hosts made our stay in Russell one we’ll remember for a long time. If you’re looking for relaxation, delicious food, and unbeatable hospitality, this is the place to be.

On our tour of New Zealand we also stayed 3 nights at Peter and Greg's Arcadia.
The over 100 year old house has been lovingly renovated by the two and is a gem to stay overnight.
Each room is stylishly decorated. You feel right at home here. Also the location, with direct sea views, is excellent.
Special mention should also be made of the first-class breakfast, where you notice that a former chef is doing his best here.
We felt very comfortable and will definitely come back if we come to New Zealand again.

Do you have a timeline of the Lodges history? My grand parents are previous owners of the Arcadia

Hi Lindley and Don, just spotted your booking for next summer - welcome back to Russell. Off the top of my head I know the time line back 3 owners ago which is only to the 80s but if you let me know your grandparents' name I can find out more. Going back from us the owners names were Carlsson, before them Heays & Bosanquet, before them Shatwell (his name but not sure if his wife had the same name) but they ran it as a very successful back packers. Lots of people in town would be able to give me the info if I can give the name. Otherwise I need to dig out the title deeds. Cheers, David
