Heading back from the far, far North we decided to spend a few nights in Russell. We had planned to visit another area slightly further south but couldn’t book into the campsite so we called up Orongo Bay Holiday Park and got a welcome voice in the phone saying “just turn up, we’ve got plenty of space”. So I was a bit grumpy at not getting to the campsite that I wanted to but that soon changed. Friday night was pizza night (the oven had been fired up since about 2pm) and we were encouraged to join in, which the kids did, with great enthusiasm. Anyway, long story short, this is a neat campsite, the new owners are very welcoming and have great plans for the site. Plenty of space, a swimming pool, bbq, pizza oven. What more do you want?! Great place to base yourself to explore Russell and the surrounding area.

Oh, did I mention the kiwi and the kiwi trail? No?? You’ll have to visit to find out more!!!

We stayed at the Orongo bay holiday park over summer and were really happy with the friendliness and service. Holly went out of her way to make us feel welcome and gave us special assistance to make sure our stay was comfortable.
It was great being in the bush and being able to hear the birds including Kiwi at night. We enjoyed the kiwi trail but unfortunately we didn’t get a chance to do it at night.
Thanks for the great stay.

This camp ground is huge, and has a very good vibe to it. There are some sites tucked into private corners in the bush (unpowered sites) and the powered sites are all close to the facilities. There is an excellent barista caravan onsite and a camp shop for the (very) basics.
Our powered site was generously sized and power and water close for plugging in.

Unfortunately the facilities let this motor camp down. The tiny kitchen services a huge number of people and has 3 sinks. The communal bbqs and pizza oven are excellent. The showers require $2 to run and are average cleanliness. A suggestion for the owners - if the shower is about to run out it would be great if it ran for an extra 30-60 secs just on cold as a form of warning and quick rinse off.

The kiwi walk is a must do and there is a playground and swimming pool for the kids.

Should have read the reviews before booking. I’ve tried to reach out several times to the owner to address this before resorting to a review but they have opted to ignore me. Place could be great but management are totally out of their depth and should not be in hospitality. Our cabin had no working shower so could not have one and sat 2am the fire alarm went off waking us and everyone else up. It was the sound of a normal alarm rather than a faulty or dying battery so upon waking and seeing there was no fire we concluded it could be a carbon monoxide alarm. My young son had felt nauseous earlier which is unlike him so we opened all the doors and windows and stayed awake all night fearful our kids and us would die in the night of monoxide leak in the cabin. At 4am the roosters start crowing anyway so I’d be woken by that (who on earth thinks it’s a good idea to have roosters in an area people go for SLEEP!) the mind boggles. At 430am the alarm started again this time going off every 5 mins long and loud waking the entire camp ground. We realised only then it was faulty but couldn’t turn it off or remove it. About 830 after hours of beeping and nightmare noise the manager came over with a new alarm carrying the beeping one off in his hands. Later told us that this alarm worked fine lol yeh whatever you say. Eyeroll. Was told they would be in touch about a partial refund since the entire point of the place is a shower and sleep of which we received neither. I’m minded to reverse the credit card charges. In all terrible service and they are running the place to the ground. Such a shame as they could have a good thing here with repeat business but they have no love for the place or the people who pay them!

They over sold places that weren’t available to sell and the facilities are not enough for a crowd. Only 3 fridges for more than 300 people and 5 toilets and showers, there is a smaller sector with another 2 fridges and 3 toilets and showers only for cabin accommodation. We had to walk almost 2 blocks to go to the toilets and kitchen as there are no facilities for people at the end of the camping.
Kitchen really small with no equipment or not enough.
They gave us a spot that is a parking spot, not available for camp as there is a drain and smells horrible, it’s next to the fire spot and during New Year’s Eve there was a fire the whole night and we were breathing smoke the whole night, no one checking anything. I’ve worked in hospitality for almost 15 years and during that period you need to have extra people checking everything is ok or safe. It was raining so the water from the drain came to our tents and the smell was even worst! We decided to returned home earlier than expected as we were having a terrible experience. Luckily they refunded us for our total stay as they charged us the same amount we paid in Hihi Beach in a beautiful camping that I definitely recommend to go as is cleaner and has better facilities for everyone.
They advertise a coffee shop that was never opened!
They also run out of water on 30/12/2022 on the showers, as it was full of people!

I won’t come back to that place ever again. It was the worst camping I’ve been to New Zealand, I don’t recommend this at all!!!!!

We stayed here to treat ourselves to a little bit of (relative!) luxury as we travel in our camper - hot shower, wifi and to do some washing was our aim. And I’m sad to say it was far from it! Arrived to hear from reception that pool wasn’t working (no mention of this when we booked the night before!) and that washing machines only took $2 coins, of which there were none on the site so it meant a trip back into Russell to find change. Maybe this was our oversight but surely campsite tokens would solve this. Facilities are very basic and you only get a small amount of wifi before you have to pay, a real shame. And then to top it all off, when I went to have a shower I put my $2 coin in to find that there was no hot water and I’d just paid for a cold shower. Overall not what we’d hoped, and maybe $48 a night might seem like good value but when you add on all the extra costs, this was a big spend for us to leave disappointed. The only silver lining was that were able to hear kiwis in the night.

Room Tip: The kiwi trail was good fun but muddy. Go an hour after dark and listen out for kiwi.

The location was great, listening to the kiwis and moreporks at night. This accommodation has potential but is not reaching it. Self contained unit #142 which was our room sleeps up to 4 but only has 2 glasses and 1 wine glass, no face cloths and plenty of ants in the kitchen and bathroom. The door doesn't lock from the outside so we took all our valuable possessions with us when tiki touring. Informed the owners and were told they knew about it but said there is no theft there. When we said we weren't happy not being able to lock our accommodation the owner said he'd come and put a deadbolt on the door, but he never came. Really poor service.

Kitchen and bathroom facilities really old and was left dirty most times of the day. Really bad drainage at camp sites 23-25 (non powered). Sewage smell close to those sites as well. Felt a bit like they were packing as much people in as they could for money and did not really attend to their guests as they should. For the high price tag of $70 per night in Dec it was really disappointing.

Sadly we had one of our worst stays in NZ here. The advertising looks amazing online still, but something doesn't measure up anymore. Dirty and broken community facilities. We were surrounded by overgrown tobacco weed and noticable rubbish / bags, rats in the ceiling making a racket all night- running over the clear light as we ate our dinner on the deck. Were told no they are possums when we gave feedback. We gave feedback in a friendly manner phone and email, and were told we would get a refund for the 2nd night that we didn't stay... then no contact for 3 weeks. When we got in contact we were refused our money back and pretty much told we were the 1% who were not happy with the place. After asking around I know that's not true as we have heard of others who had the same experience, just didn't complain up front. I wish I had more positives to say. The Kiwi walk was fun at night. We were actually really saddened by the state of the place, and the way we were then treated by offering honest feedback. The Top 10 down the road was amazing in comparison. I wouldn't recommend Orongo at all. And I had hoped we could just fix our disappointment professionally customer to business owner as it should go.

Very poorly maintained campsite, tired facilities, charged $2 to shower with cold water, over new year period camp was very overcrowded, with only 4 working female showers. Owner suggested they were within capacity, that’s obviously based on legal pitches not all the extra spaces used to cram extra people in. Money grabbing cones to mind!
