Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We spent four nights at Kingfisher's during our recent trip to New Zealand to celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary. The hosts were more than inn hosts; they truly welcomed us int their home. The room was wonderful; breakfast delicious and they truly did all they could to make sure that we had a wonderful time, whether that was making reservations, suggesting day trips or engaging us in conversation. It was a highlight of our trip. The Russell area is also a great place with much to see and do.

We toured New Zealand in a camper van for a month, enjoying some of the most wonderful people, scenery, and wild life. We decided towards the end of our trip to have a bit of luxury, and stayed at the Kingfisher Rest B&B for two nights - just wonderful!! The hosts, Lydia and Duncan, were great. On arrival they upgraded our stay, at no extra cost, to the Tui room, as it was free for our stay. The room is gorgeous, very tastefully decorated, exceptionally clean, and well equipped. The ensuite was a dream!! They made us very welcome, and even gave us a lift to, and a pick up from, a restaurant in Russell. The whole experience with Lydia and Duncan was simply fantastic - thank you!

We spent 3 nights at the Kingfisher’s Nest and thoroughly enjoyed it. It is located outside Russell in a lovely, quiet spot. The hosts Lydia and Duncan were very hospitable—- starting with lots of suggestions as we were planning our NZ trip. There was a nice greeting sign on the porch as we arrived and many good suggestions for restaurants and thing to do and see. The place is spotless, bright and airy. The bed was comfortable and the breakfast was great. Lydia and Duncan are truly interested in providing a top quality experience and sought our honest feedback and suggestions for improvement, which was hard to do given how excellent it already is. I would highly recommend!

Loved this place. After spending the night across the bay in Paihia which was very disappointing, I thought I'd give Russell a try. I found Kingfisher on an internet site and thought I'd give it a go. I was not disappointed. First, the hosts, Lydia and Duncan, are incredible. Friendly, informative and clearly committed to their new endeavor of being B&B hosts. Everything from the breakfast to the linens to the gardens were fantastic. They have thought of every little detail and really made it special. It was only because of them I changed my opinion of Bay of Islands. Can't wait to go back!! Such a lovely place. Note: the location is too far to walk to town but with a car, it was only about 7 minutes. It is half way between the ferry and the town center.

Such a special place. Great views and the most delicious breakfast. If you looking to stay close to Russell this is perfect. 10min drive to the town. Lydia and Duncan are the most amazing hosts. Lydia was kind enough to even pick us up after our New Years dinner. The room was extremely comfortable with small touches (like you can order a cheese platter or play some Uno on the deck looking over the oyster beds) that make the stay so worth it. Nestled is the bush so great bird life and the gardens are beautiful!

The hosts have provided a great retreat for visitors with lovely rooms, amazing views, and excellent food. Visitors have the top floor of the house which gives lovely views across one of the bays near Russell, and it's a quick drive into Russell itself. There are lovely birds to watch and listen to including tuis, wood pigeons, wekas and rosellas. Lydia and Duncan are great hosts with just the right local knowledge to guide you during your stay. Foodies will love the breakfasts with locally sourced food, and there's great platter and wine options or home-cooked meals in the evening as an additional option. An excellent place to base yourself in Northland.

Visiting from Ireland it was lovely to stay in such a friendly B&B and get lots of local knowledge, where to visit, ideas for walks etc. Would recommend a boat trip for fabulous views of the islands especially if the dolphins come alongside on the way! Room very spacious and comfortable, excellent food with lots of choices for breakfast. Good location Thanks Lydia & Duncan for making us so welcome.
