You won't find nicer hosts than Robyn and Kees, so if you stay in this area for Nelson or Abel Tasman, then I doubt you'll find better. The accommodation was lovely, and very well arranged, so that you have enough privacy, with separate access to your room, but you still feel that you are sharing their home, so a really nice balance. The food was wonderful, and Kees produces a lot of his own fruit, etc. Breakfast were great, and Robyn and Kees were more than happy to offer advice on tours etc. We also took advantage of Robyn's offer to launder some of our clothes for a very nominal charge, all nicely pressed and on our bed when we got back from a day out...first class !
Robyn and Kees are lovely caring people, and you run a lovely B&B, thanks for making it a lovely relaxing two nights with you.

Peter and Janine are very hospitable and real pros. Pete met us in the driveway when we arrived and his attention to detail continued throughout our stay. The room was small, but efficient and charming. Pete prepares excellent breakfasts tailored to our tastes. His recommendations for dinners were right on. He ordered a taxi when we did not want to drive to town. We would definitely stay here again.

Thank you John for your very kind review. It was our pleasure to host you and your lovely wife. We are glad that you enjoyed the restaurants, there is plenty of choice and we really care about the experience you have when here in Nelson. The Abel Tasman Park would have been a great experience too. If we recall correctly you went with Charlotte and she thoroughly enjoyed your company. All the very best, we would love to see you again. Warm regards Janine and Peter.

We arrived in Nelson on a gloomy day with much rain and cold weather. However, our mood changed shortly after getting to know Pete who runs the place. He offered excellent suggestions for restaurants and things to do in the area. He went out of his way to make us feel comfortable and was extremely helpful with all matters. We enjoyed the Jacuzzi every night with a bottle of local wine, which Pete provided from his collection. Breakfast was always an adventure as I showed Pete how to make crepes and he in return made excellent omelettes, pancakes, scones and other goodies. Every evening upon our return, he made tea and served it with locally made cookies. We can't say enough good things about our host. Pete's hospitality more than made for the sparse bedroom facilities and bathroom. We ended up extending our stay for a third night to enjoy more wine tasting, visiting Abel Tasman and the WOW museums.

Thanks for your review. It is our pleaseure to provide a complimentary glass of wine or beer to our guests every night, perhaps it felt like a bottle in the jacuzzi:) We do try to ensure that all guests have an enjoyable stay. I am sorry the room did not live up to your expectations as all feedback to date has been very positive. All the best. Pete.

Well.....what can we say about this wonderful B&B in Nelson. When we arrived we were met by Janine and Peter and felt immediately at home with their warm welcome. We were in the "Honeymoon" Suite and were delighted with this lovely, cosy room. Our 1st day of breakfast just blew us away! In all our travels around the world this would have to be one of the best breakfast we have had, wholesome and healthy. Janine and Peter are truly great hosts and we cannot wait to get back to Nelson to visit them.

Imagine flying halfway around the globe to a place you've never been before and instantly feeling at home—without having to do any of the cleaning, cooking, or yard maintenance. Welcome to Ambleside! From the moment we pulled into Peter and Janine's driveway at 9pm and were greeted at our car by the gregarious (and barefoot) Peter, we knew we'd made the right choice for our stay in Nelson. What we didn't know was that Peter and Janine would quickly come to feel like old friends—exceptionally welcoming, authentically warm, and 2 of the most hospitable people we've ever visited while traveling. Their home is immaculate and very comfortable (thanks, too, to neighbor Rachel for her excellent and friendly service), located within walking distance of the beach or slightly longer walking distance (~45 minutes) to downtown Nelson—or, you can catch the local bus downtown from right across the street. Don't miss the inspiring and outrageous WOW (World of Wearable Art) Museum only 5 minutes from Ambleside, either. Peter is a phenomenal cook, carefully preparing each morning's delicious, made-to-order breakfast and serving it up with good humor; each evening, he poured us a glass of wine or juice like we were guests at a 5-star hotel. Not surprisingly, this homey atmosphere inspired guests to spend evening time together on the back patio, where we met people from Germany, Denmark, Britain, and China over the course of our visit. We'd originally planned to stay at Ambleside for 3 nights, but were fortunately able to add a fourth when a cyclone cut our wonderful trip to Abel Tasman a day short; Peter and Janine graciously stored our bags for us while we were away and had them waiting for us in our room when we returned. We highly recommend Ambleside to fellow travelers—and Peter and Janine, we hope to see you again in the future!

In a nutshell:
- Pete and Janine are superb hosts, always friendly, helpful and attentive.
- The place is in a great location, especially for excursions to Abel Tasman, Golden Bay etc.
- In spite of being next to a main road, it is very quiet.
- Breakfast is fantastic. We loved the pancakes and muesli.

Room was small, breakfast was marginal, owner was great but the price was $100 above what was normal on this long trip. It is a house converted to a B&B and very little space. I paid $240 for their best room it was worth more like $140.

We are very sorry that you were disappointed with your rate. It is always our aim to provide an excellent service and value for money. Thank you for your rating which I assume was a reflection of the hospitality recieved. Just to clarify this is not a converted house it was purpose built in 2003 on the back of an original old villa. Unfortunately your expectations around price may be a little unrealistic. February is the height of the season and outside of hostels and backpackers it would be near impossible to get accommodation for two including a full restaurant quality breakfast for your estimate of $140NZ. We go out of way to provide the best service and hotels do not offer baking, drinks and other refreshments and in your case picking you up at the airport in the evening and saving you taxi fare by dropping you off at your rental car in the morning after you had checked out. Unfortunately with only a one night stay and a late arrival we did not get much of an opportunity to get to know you.We have not received a review of this nature so may need to undergo therapy to recover :) but thank you for your rating. All the best Pete and Janine.

We stayed two nights at Ambleside during our 3 week tour of the South Island. Peter and Janine warrant all the positive comments here from other travelers - they are excellent hosts. Peter was especially sporting when Ireland beat the All Blacks for the first time in 111 years, just after a brilliant breakfast on the Sunday morning (Saturday evening Chicago time), The choice on the breakfast menu is amazing.
Our room and all the facilities were very comfortable, and the location on SH6 is ideal for Nelson itself and access to Abel Tasman.

Ambleside B&B in Nelson got new owners. Peter manages the place, he is a great entertainer, and we had a lot of fun. His wife is more reserved, but very friendly, too. The rooms are not giant size, but very clean and comfortable. Small things count: fresh fruits and cookies from the bakery in the guest lounge are always available, if you want you can have a nice cold drink with Peter. A TV is not in the room, but in the lobby. WiFi is available. If you need restaurant reservations, Peter will help you. And the breakfast is a feast: try the blueberry pancake, the speciality of the house. Thanks, especially to Peter, for those wonderful three days we could stay in your B&B!

HI Alison Sorry for late reply, we are extremely busy. We have the Speights Ale House within walking distance - just a few minutes away, and some other good but casual dining is 20 minutes walk away. Otherwise you could get a bus into town and a taxi home. The cost is not prohibitive. If we are not busy with other guests, we can deliver you to restaurant and you could taxi home. Hope this helps. I am assuming we may see you see this evening.
