Our first time in Nelson as a family over the long weekend and we wanted a comfortable place close to Nelson CBD. The Hotel Nelson was great.
Booking and notifications were straightforward. I looked at the website and then booked over the phone. Prior to arrival, we received a reminder text.
Our family of 2 adults and 2 children stayed in a 1 bedroom unit. We found it clean, tidy, and spacious. The kitchen was really useful for us. Its a full kitchen with microwave, oven, and stove, and electric frypan. Full size fridge and freezer to use.
The bathroom was tidy and there were plenty of towels.
We didn't intend on doing any washing but we ended up doing some washing while we were here. There is a wee laundry room and it was $2 each to use the washing machine and dryer.
Plenty of carparks if you drive. Also a 5 minute drive or nice walk into the centre of Nelson.
Staff were amazing and attentive while we were here. Everyone we encountered were friendly and showed great service.
We would love to come and stay again!

We have stayed at The Hotel Nelson many times for a 1 or 2 night stay and because of past good experience and close proximity to town we continue to return.
Last weekend we held a family reunion at this great facility. Bookings for accommodation and conference rooms were made in January. There were quite few changes to accommodation arrangements by us over a period of several months and hotel staff were very obliging at all times. 37 family memebers came from as far south as Invercargill to Manawetu in the north and all were impressed with accommodation, helpful staff and amazing food. The conference rooms were set up beautifully for our buffet dinner where there was more than enough well presented superb food. Rishi and his staff definitely played a part in making it a memorable weekend for us. At no time did we find any outside noise to be an issue in fact there were many comments on the sound proof aspect of the rooms.
We would highly reccommend this facility.

We booked a family room with 3 bedrooms for 3 couples and 2 kids. The kitchen was quite small for a 3 bedroom family room and one of the rooms was quite small - not even enough space to open suitcases.
It was cold and we found that the smallest room’s electric blanket wasn’t plugged in. To top it off there wasn’t a power outlet in the room either. Went to call reception but the phone wasn’t connected to the phone point either. Had to move the furniture to connect the phone and reception staff said the house keeping staff will look into it. I told them no one can add a power point in the room now and they said we can give you an extension cord and try and find an extra heater!!! We were traveling with parents and little kids - extension cord wasn’t an ideal solution.
Went up to the reception and at one point the receptionist (who was in training) said she can give us our money back and we can leave. Where were we going to go at night with the whole family??? Eventually to resolve the issue they offered us 3 separate rooms upstairs, at least they had working heating. Next morning while trying to heat up some food, we found the microwave in one of the rooms wasn’t plugged in and there was no outlet for it either!!!
Hopefully the hotel invests in making sure their appliances work and have outlets to plug them in. And provide better training to staff so they don’t put the responsibility/shift the blame on each other (reception putting it on house keeping and vice versa).

Really disappointed with this establishment. Prices on par with Auckland and not worth it. A la Carte breakfast menu seems pointless when items served are precooked and heated up when served, all good if you like rubbery fried eggs. Cannot understand the need for 2 double beds in a room, especially when the pillows on one back onto a door handle!

Although this was our 2nd time here, unfortunately we left with less than expected experience. While checkin was “ sufficient “ it would have been better to be given “hotel information,” Like, location of room, bar and restaurant open hours etc. The room was fine, clean and ok for a 3 star property, the light and morning sun was not kept out by very thin curtains! ( they need backing)! Surprised by the “service” ( or lack of it) of the room on the second day, bed made, towel’s replaced, that’s all! cups etc not cleaned, nothing else, a 5 minute “ service” housekeeping trolly outside our room from early in the morning till late arvo blocking our table snd chairs and a pile of dirty towels from other rooms on our table so using our outside furniture was not a go. The first night we did go down to the bar/ restaurant and it was Great! service was awesome personality and a smile! In the afternoon of the following day ( Saturday) I wanted to double check the bar hours as I thought it was open from 3pm, I read in the compendium it was from 4pm, I went to reception to check, i was told 4’30, I questioned this as the compendium said 4, I was told ( with an attitude) it is 4’30 and always has been! So I asked for the closest wine shop ( older lady with black curly hair and glades) said town! I said oh Bugger we just came from town, she says well that’s the closest!! So we walked back to town found a nice bar with seats in the sun then walked back ( 15 plus minute walk each way) We got back at 4’05 with the bar open! We asked them there times and yes open at 4! They are so lovely there it’s a pity reception isn’t the same! At checkout the next day unfortunately the same lady was also at reception after we checked out waiting for a taxi I noticed a fridge in reception with bottles of wine and cans of beer, I asked her if these are for sale she said yes, I then asked her why she didn’t tell me the day before when I asked about a wine shop she said it’s expensive! You should have seen it! Really! Did i look like I couldn’t afford it! Really is that customer service! I think she needs to remember she is in the “hospitality “ industry! Consequently 4 of us in early in the new year have booked elsewhere.

Bitterly disappointed. We arrived in our room (room 85) and it stank of cigarette smoke, was musty and we noticed the smoke detector had been covered with wet toilet paper by the previous person. I went to reception and told a woman who offered to send someone over with some sort of deodorant for the room. I said no thanks, expecting she would at least offer to send someone to remove the toilet paper from the detector or shift us to another room. She did neither and instead, in a very fake and patronising tone, said that “we shall track down the very naughty person who did it”. I was caught off guard and went back to our stinky room. I looked online and there were other rooms still available so she could have at least moved us. If she had offered a refund, we would have moved on but she didn’t and we felt trapped. On a side note, it is illegal to have a covered smoke detector and I was very clear it had been covered up. The arrogant and aloof service about such an issue is something I’ve never experienced before. We told a different person when we checked out and we got much the same reaction - about as helpful as a shrug.
Absolutely horrible experience and service, the worst we have had on our tour of the South Island.

Dear eliseprovis, thank you for your review, Guest feedback is vital for us to learn where we need to be better and I am very sorry to read of your experience and how our lack of attention and friendliness has left you with a very bad experience. We can improve from here and each department has been spoken to to ensure we do better going forward. We agree - it is illegal to cover a smoke detector and to smoke in rooms but unfortunately not everyone respects this and we do our best to rectify before the room is bookable again. I was pleased to read that you enjoyed the rest of your tour of the South Island Kind regards Kim Rogers

I just wanted to say, that while we ended up not needing the room booked, the staff here went out of their way to accommodate special circumstances. Nelson was preparing for another flood, my Dad was undergoing his first chemo cycle for cancer treatment; they held a room for us in case I couldn't get Dad home, and wasn't able to reach Mum. We were able to cancel to suit. The times we've had dinner at the hotel's restaurant Flames on Forty, I couldn't spoken highly enough of the great, honest service. And the food! You guys are head and shoulders above many, many places. Thank you so much. Ngā mihi nui.

This is a nice hotel/motel. However when booking direct the website states "pay at the hotel". On arrival I was told the amount of our stay had already been charged to the credit card number I supplied when booking (a credit card number is compulsory as is the additional fee charged for using a credit card). The receptionist stated it was now their policy to charge the credit card on the day of arrival. We also stayed earlier this year and was told when booking direct, payment was not required until check in. If the policy remains to charge the credit card prior to arrival then I will not be staying again.

Very tired hotel, carpet was threadbare and stained, bathroom needed updating, I can’t remember when I had a plastic shower screen, towels should be replaced. The sink in the bathroom kept blocking. On a positive note, the rooms were very large, and the beds comfortable. For a large hotel it was quiet.
