I would recommend staying at this back packers. Simon and Melissa are very friendly and welcoming. My room was clean, and the sheets were so crisp and clean, I was very impressed. Fully booked the night I stayed, Lots of young overseas travelers, which makes life interesting, The Fish and Chip shop across the road is a definite must. Good price and beautiful food as something different. So much more for your buck, than Tauranga and Auckland and much better quality. If you have time to fill in before catching a plane, you can vacate your room and spend time ina very comfortable lounge before departing, no extra cost. I recommend Wakatu Lodge as a place to stay.
Thoroughly enjoyed my stay at Wakatu, the family who run the place are very friendly and go out of their way to help, the facilities are good and the location is just right to encourage a moderate walk each day into town. Great value for money. Could (and possibly will) quite happily live there for months.
it is a nice palce for living...we enjoy a lit in thie place...it is cool and quite...amazing pool board...the owner of this lodge are very much friendly and co operative...so if you go to nelson...you can stay here
Booked this hotel believing that it was near to the city centre but it was quite a walk. If you are arriving by bus I would suggest getting a taxi to the hotel as it is quite far to walk if you have luggage. I got the feeling that a lot of the guests were long-term residents,, it is quite near to a college/ university. Staff were friendly and helpful. Rooms and communal areas were clean and tidy. There is a communal room with TV, etc. Hotel can arrange trips for you but we had already booked ours from the tourist information by the bus station.
Wakatu Lodge was an amazing experience for our family. We had intended on traveling around the south island but a mixture of travel fatigue and great things to do locally saw us spend almost two months at Wakatu Lodge. It is an interesting mix of longer term residents and short term backpackers. The family that runs the lodge does a great job of making you feel welcome. They are continually updating and accessorizing the lodge. The theme is all things kiwi - but done in a very tasteful - non-garish way. The lodge has a great games / TV room, two well-stocked communal kitchens, shared bathroom facilities, a pool and even resident chickens to help with composting. Our boys got along well with the owners children. Many hours were spent bike riding, exploring the Grampion…
