The Wheelhouse Inn in Nelson

Recently my wife and I had the pleasure of staying at the Wheelhouse located in Nelson. Liking what we saw on their website we were not disappointed upon our arrival. While going though our home for the next three days we were taken back by virtually everything we saw-cleanliness, layout, nautical theme, generous amenities-and then there was the view-WOW! The “Crows Nest” had it all, and then some!
To say that we thoroughly enjoyed our time in Nelson would be an understatement with a good deal of it directly related to the status of our chosen accommodation. Meeting owner Ralph Hetzel was a bonus with his passion for his property evident from the outset but surpassed by his penchant for seeing his guests happy and well catered for while in his charge. Overall we can’t say enough about this property which Ralph and his wife had the vision and energy to create high above the beauty that encapsulates the harbour and ocean views below. Manager Kim makes sure things are run smoothly in the same vein the Hetzels began nearly two decades ago. Any regrets? Only that we limited ourselves to three nights, something we have remedied this coming year by doubling our time! Can’t wait!

We really loved staying here and will definitely be back. It was stunning and very homely, clean and comfortable. Everything was provided that you would need such as complimentary washing power, detergent, cooking equipment, sugar, tea, coffee. The supermarket is not too far away along with close proximity to restaurants, dairy's etc for any extra's you may need. But the house -Oh how we loved the house!!! Fantastic views, comfy furniture, comfy bed, washing machine and dryer, nicely furnished, and just a gorgeous quiet central location. I cant say enough about The Wheelhouse Inn. Surpassed all of our expectations and have already recommended it to all our friends. Well done. 10/10 from us

My husband, son and myself spent four nights at the Wheelhouse Inn, Chart House Upper Deck in June 2021 and loved every minute. Fantastic views, plus everything you could think of supplied by the owners of this property, right down to binoculars to study the views.
The bedrooms were perfectly adequate - beds comfortable and warm - electric blanket also supplied if required. Extra pillows etc supplied.
Really enjoyed the HOT water in the shower. Washing machine and drier also supplied, great if you were staying longer.
Nelson really turned on the weather too, which was an added bonus.
We would definitely book the Wheelhouse again if we were planning another trip to Nelson.

We stayed for two nights in the Wheelhouse room. It was spread over three levels with the bedroom on the top floor, the lounge and kitchen on the second level and the bathroom and laundry on the lower level. The lounge and bedroom had spectacular sea views and the room was private. It was surrounded by lovely gardens and a quiet bush setting. The Wheelhouse Inn is close to Nelson city and local attractions. I left some jewellery behind in a rush to get to the airport. The hosts quickly located these and offered to bring them to the airport, unfortunately we had already boarded our flight, so they couriered them to me at NO cost! Amazing!

We only stayed here one night but wished we could have stayed longer. You get a spacious apartment and outdoor terrace with beautiful sea views. The gardens are beautiful. The accommodation is located on a steep hill so you need to drive in and out with care. Nelson is a fantastic small city - we would recommend Melrose House with a lovely cafeteria and which is free to walk around.

Surpasses all expectations, this is the best air bnb we have ever been in. Beautifully presented, it has everything you could possibly need. Stunning view from the bedroom and sitting room; comfortable bed - can’t fault it. Highly recommended

The views are amazing from all rooms, the big windows make the most of the sea views.
Clean and spacious apartment.
Nice kitchen and private deck out the side.
The only negative is the shower- no pressure and hard to get temperature right, the shower is very big but you have to walk out of water to adjust taps. Very hard to rinse shampoo out of hair with a dribble of water.
No instructions about how to check in so went to wrong accommodation initially and had to phone lady.
We stayed in the upper deck.

This was our least favorite accommodation on our 2 week stay in NZ. The seating was uncomfortable, the TV was tiny, the bed sheets were low quality and frankly we did not think it was clean - some of the dishware was still dirty and the amount of dust was visible (the oar coming down the stairs has a THICK layer). We also emailed them while we were there (we had no phone service) and got no response.
