Comfortable and clean rooms. Impressive entrance lobby. Good buffet breakfast. Helpful and friendly staff. Building dates from 1972 and some of the stairwells/corridors hark back to that era, but not maintained. Rooms could do with a safe.
The hotel needs refreshing and a facelift. Really didn’t like it. We have stayed in about 8 different hotels since January and this was bottom of the list. Sorry! The staff were friendly and tried to help.
During our trip is it South Island we stayed in this hotel for two nights, we stayed in an adapted room for wheelchair access, room 410. The first night sleep was interrupted by the sound of a gentleman next door talking on his phone at midnight, it was also quite a windy night and the windows of this hotel are clearly only single glazed (It was almost as if we were sleeping outside). The hotel in general is quite dated and needs updating which I was advised by a lady on reception will be happening.
We had a bit of trouble finding the hotel but the receptionist at the Hotel Nelson soon put us right - incorrect address shown on our Travel itinerary- but on arrival there was valet parking and help with our luggage. Friendly welcome and slick check in. The hotel had a lovely feel about it and the sweeping staircase up from Reception was fabulous We had a walk into the town and then back to the hotel to peruse the Dinner Menu We queried a couple of items on the menu with the MaitreD and after we had enjoyed 3 brilliant courses (Jill said that this was the best lamb dish she had eaten) the Executive Chef came to see us to answer our queries - it transpired that he was born in a town 10 miles away from us in the UK and trained at our favourite Shropshire restaurant- small world!…
Very comfortable stay at the Rutherford. Room was comfortable with a decent view. Hotel service was friendly. Close to town if you want to walk to a restaurant or a bar. Enjoyed my stay and would stay here again.
