Located in a quiet garden setting along the Maitai River in downtown Nelson city, this modern' VictorianCottage' B&B offers 1 enchanting room, genuine Kiwi/Canadian hospitality and fabulous gourmet breakfasts. After 21 years in the 'big house' at 51 Domett we downsized to our cottage at 52 Domett Street, but enjoy B&B so much that we are only semi retired. Our home is designed to be environmentally friendly, faces north allowing the guests to enjoy the morning sun through their French doors which opens to their private patio. Canadian Chef, Janet Southwick ensures that breakfasts are always a treat with blueberry baked French toast, specialty omelettes and frittatas.

A delightful place to stay. The bedroom is between the bathroom and a small kitchen/living room space and the unit was given unobtrusive housekeeping each day. We had 4 nights here and really appreciated the quietness and cozy environment. The hosts were helpful, friendly, and unobtrusive, and very obliging with providing some extra kitchen utensils that we asked for. The breakfasts were yummy! We thoroughly recommend Baywick Inn and will stay here again when next in Nelson.

The Baywick Inn is a bed and breakfast but is in every respect 5* and much better than you will find in many top rate hotels. We stayed only 1 night (could have done with more as Nelson is a lovely place). Our hosts Tim and Janet were excellent as is Janet's cooking. The place is furnished with antiques but with every modern convenience and lots of extras in the bathroom. There is guest parking in the grounds Although a B&B we ate there in the evening as 3 other guests had asked if Janet could do a dinner. What a feast!! Excellent and not expensive. Breakfast was a delight. Cannot recommend this place highly enough.

The Baywick is a superb B&B in every respect. Attention to detail and comfort are the watchwords of this beautiful B&B. All the little conveniences are attended to. In fact, I am sure Janet and Tim (the hosts and owners of the Baywick) could write a book on how to make travelers happy and comfortable. The breakfast is fantastic and Janet and Tim are helpful without being obtrusive. They will happily supply you with advice as to what to do during your stay, make dinner reservations, etc. It is also located in a lovely setting that is quiet but an easy walk to the town center. What more can you want!

In February 007, we just stayed two nights at the Baywick, Inn in Nelson, NZ. The room was wonderful. The breakfast was gourmet excellent. Janet, a Canadian restauranteur for 9 years, serves a superb breakfast consisting of fruit, yogurt, cereals, plus a hot meal such as eggs, french toast, etc. Could not ask for more. Her husband, Tim, also could not do enough for us. The couple are more than helpful when it comes to giving advice about what to do in the region, etc. Their dog, Mombazzie, is adorable. I strongly recommend this B&B.

Only a few rooms, but very clean, tidy and cosy. Our room did not have an ensuit3, but did have a private, sole use bathroom.
Excellent hosts provided a very tasty and local breakfast.
We did travel in March 2017, but I didn’t realise I hadn’t posted the review!

Thanks for your review, but we have had many changes in the past 2 years. We are now doing B&B from the house we built in the back yard of the historic house 51 Domett. We have just 1 room now that is ensuite and has a wonderful outside private patio, check it out at baywicks.com, Janet

In our 5 trips to NZ we have travelled extensively and stayed in many very good guesthouses. In our opinion the Baywick Inn is far and away the best. Top class accommodation, fabulous catering , and wonderful hosts - Janet, Tim, Mombozzie and Jazz (both wirehaired fox terriers). (If you are very well, behaved guests you may get to meet them or even take one for a walk).
Janet and Tim are both very personable and informative and go out of their way to be helpful in any way they can. The location is ideal - quiet next to park and river - but only a short walk to the centre Of Nelson.
Cannot rate highly enough - 5 stars plus.
(PS - don't tell anyone else - we want ot go back there ourselves one day!)

What can I say? I admit that I have a hard time giving 5 stars! The place has to be just right. Baywick Inn earned the 5 stars! As I went through the ratings of cleanliness, service, location, value, rooms, and sleep quality, I had a hard time finding fault.

Baywick Inn is an efficiently run but very comfortable B&B. My wife and I couldn't stop passing on the location to people heading to Nelson as we travelled New Zealand. We stayed in the Parkdale room. We were make it to the Saturday market prior to getting to the Baywick and then found some time to enjoy some bread, cheese, and wine on the veranda. Very nice. The room was very comfortable and the ensuite bathroom was clean and very spacious. Janet definitely went out of her way to recommend some good dining for us since we were trying to be cost conscious but find good food. We walked to dinner and enjoyed the 10 - 15 minute walk to get to dinner. When we got back from dinner we ended up spending about 45 minutes just chatting with Janet and Tim. Although they felt a bit busy trying to get things together for the morning, we really enjoyed the conversation. Finally, the review couldn't be complete without mentioning breakfast. Wow, yummy! The muesli and hot breakfast were wonderful. I only wish we had spent more than one night there.

Because no one is perfect, I always have to mention one opportunity for improvement. I thought for a while and finally came up with something small. My wife and I wanted to Skype with the kids while there and although they had Internet, Janet did not want us to use up all their bandwidth so we had to walk down to an Internet cafe. I would have preferred to have just stayed there, but the Internet cafe was only 15 minutes away so it turned out OK.

We stayed for two nights at Baywick Inn & regard this as one of the best B+B experiences we have had. The hosts, Janet & Tim, are very nice people & always ready to offer advice if required. There is a computer with internet access but if you have your own laptop, free Wi-Fi is available throughout the house.

We stayed in the 'Burnside' room which had a lovely sunny balcony.

Baywick Inn is ideally situated & just a pleasant stroll to the CBD yet it is extremely quiet.

We strongly recommend the Baywick Inn if staying in Nelson.

Baywick Inn is located in a quiet residential area. If you enjoy taking a morning or evening stroll, there is a pathway parallel to a stream which would be a great place to explore. It is also within a short walking distance (5-10 minutes) to the restaurants and shops. We stayed in the Parkdale Room for our night stay in Nelson during our honeymoon. One night simply was not enough to experience Nelson, but we were on a tight schedule being that we only had twelve days in New Zealand. The room was very spacious, charming, and had a claw foot tub that made for dreamy bubble baths! We didn't have time to take advantage of the spacious sun room. Janet and Tim have been running an efficient business for over eleven years. They have menus for nearby restaurants along with their ratings. While Hopgoods was enthusiastically suggested and recommended, we opted for Oceano in the Rutherford Hotel. Don't be put off by the oudated decor! Dinner was delicious and offered spectacular local offerings Nelson scallops (a must!), delicious lamb, great local wines by the glass, and one of the BEST cheese plates we have ever had!!! We both are in the hospitality industry and appreciated this memorable dining experience. During dinner, the town experienced a freak power outage. As honeymooners dining in candlelight, there was no inconvenience for us. We took a taxi back to the B & B ( approximately $5 NZD) to avoid the hazard of walking blindly in the dark and our host, Tim, was ready with a flashlight to meet us at the door! It was great timing and service. Breakfast was bountiful and delicious! You will really get to enjoy Janet's culinary talents as well. Baywick Inn is highly recommended should you stay in Nelson.

We had a wonderful stay with Janet and Tim at the Baywick Inn. The Inn itself is clean, cozy and quaint. It is located on a quiet side street of Nelson within walking distance of town and a terrific walk to the "Center of New Zealand" through a park across the street. Janet's breakfasts are gourmet quality and she and Tim are gracious hosts. We highly recommend this small victorian b&b. It's perfect.

Hi Mary Ann, yes we do have a dog in this house, but it is a 'wire haired fox terrier' and they are considered to be an 'allergy friendly dog breed'. We have had a few guests that are allergic to dogs but have had no problems with him. Apparently there is a list of dogs that do not cause allergies, ie poodles, schnauzers etc PS He is never allowed in the 'guest room' and he can be put away in other areas of the house if need be, Janet
