Detailed Reviews
We stayed with Avner for five nights in early 2020. The combination of the stunning view of Nelson Bay and his marvellous and very personal hospitality gave us a perfect start to our New Zealand holiday and made us feel like we were visiting an old friend. Avner's advice on local restaurants and attractions was extremely helpful and his home grown tomatoes, home-made bread and local honey made breakfasts a treat. B&B at its best!

More than a place to stay. It is an experience. Breathtaking views, organic bread, fruits and marmalade, natural juices and milk fresh from a neighbor cow. Shower with rainwater in an absolutely modern bathroom. The soap is all natural and handmade. Views are incredible and sunset amazing. By night, the sky is illuminated by stars and early morning moon.
Location outside Nelson but well worth the experience. Host extremely knowledgeable with best restaurants and sights to see. We enjoyed our stay immensely.

Big Sky Nelson Eco B&B, a purpose-built home with one level occupied by the owner/host and one level dedicated to guests with two private bedrooms with private baths and a shared breakfast area with outdoor deck.
Big Sky is the vision of Avner Nahmias, designer and builder of the retreat just north of Nelson, New Zealand. Perched on a hillside 1,000 feet above Tasman Bay, the eco design stresses the view and natural surroundings. The terraced hillside includes organic gardens and fruit trees with paths for walking and places for contemplating. What Avner does not grow on the property, he sources locally. Our milk and cream came from a nearby farm. Fresh fruit, produce and cheese all came from within a 20-mile radius.
Avner is all you could wish for in a host: welcoming, attentive and passionate about each guest and their experience on site and beyond. He knows most of the local restaurants and attractions, insightful at matching his advice to the individual guest or group.

We really enjoyed our recent stay at Big Sky B&B. Avner has the gift of hospitality! The views from the rooms of the Tasman Sea were stunning. He has created a small relaxation oasis. We traveled with our best friends and utilized 2 rooms. Avner provided great advise on things to do in the area including some good recommendations on the local eateries. The B&B is located just a few minutes from town

Tucked on the top of a hill is Big Sky Nelson, run by host, Avner, who prides his own constructed house which has amazing views of the sea and mountains in the distance. It is modern and very clean. Waking up to sunrise with the included breakfast of fresh local produce, retiring when the sun goes down and providing the perfect clear sky for star gazing was what my husband and I managed during our 5 night stay which was what we needed to finish off our busy year.
Avner was great with recommendations in the area.
Just a drive away is the Nelson town centre which has many fantastic restaurants that always managed to satisfy our palates. Also, a pleasant drive across Nelson’s country landscape gets you to the surrounds including the famous Abel Tasman National Park.

The climb up the road to Big Sky may be a bit daunting for those not used to New Zealand's roads but it's worth it for the view. Avner is an excellent host, welcoming and attentive. He recommended a great Thai restaurant for us on the Nelson harbour front for our first night. The room was nicely furnished in a minimalist style, with a very comfortable bed and a large modern bathroom. The continental breakfast was excellent with delicious home made and locally sourced produce. Well worth the diversion up the hill.

When I spoke with the owner and mentioned that I plan to come for one day, he recommended me to stay at least 2 days and I am so happy we did as he advised.
This place is up on the mountain and has the best view of Nelson, the ocean and the entire bay.
Basically I recommend everyone to plan one afternoon at Big Sky, open a bottle of wine have some cheese and stay at this magical place to watch the stunning sunset.
we arrived into this place in the afternoon and we got a very warm welcome and got our room within seconds. the room was clean and have two large windows with the best view. there's also a great kitchen area and laundry if needed.
When we spoke with the owner he asked us a few questions about our plans and immediately recommended us a few place to go. Some are famous and some are hidden spots that most likely only the locals know about.
we did go to these places and had amazing two days around Nelson with the best view in the area.

Avner was a fabulous host, with great input on local hikes, local restaurants, Marlborough wineries, and Abel Tasmin...He even went above and beyond with some help arranging transport for the great hike nearby. The views are spectacular and the rooms and spaces are designed with an aesthetic touch!! Hope to make it back...

If you're anywhere near Nelson - and by near I mean on the South Island - do yourself a huge favor and stay here. You can't go wrong with either the guest house or the rooms in the main house, the latter of which we had the pleasure of enjoying on our May trip. The house itself is an architectural marvel, and you'll enjoy it immensely if you're a fan of nature, minimalism, and peacefulness. Hopefully you enjoy all three. The views, needless to say, are epic and there are ample opportunities to enjoy said views, be it from the numerous decks in the house or from your massive windows that span the length of the room. Breakfast in the morning was superb: fresh local fruit galore, fresh bread, honeys and jams from Nelson, among other wonderful goodies. Our host was truly wonderful - so thoughtful, generous and accommodating. And if you're looking for some solid exercise, you can run down the road and back up - it was awesome!
