Detailed Reviews
Great room with beautiful big bathroom. Continental breakfast was perfect with local bread, jams and honey. Also lovely gift from the host of a delicious jar of the Retreat's own honey. The host Sarah also went out of her way to drop us off to a dinner reservation and to our bus the following morning, arriving with fresh muffins and bottled water for our next journey. Wonderful place, can highly recommend.

We stayed in the Hilliard Suite . The quality was second to none - from the bathroom to the bed and the really cool way to light up the gas fire (with the remote control) when it got cooler in the evening. Waking up and taking in the sun on the balcony overlooking the gardens was a great way to start the day. The Nelson weather was kind enough for the walk into town to be pleasant - a good way to work off breakfast. We liked the quality sheets on the very comfortable bed and enjoyed having our own vanity units each in the bathroom. To summarise, this was a true 5-star experience and one that we are planning to experience again.

Pihopa Retreat was the most decadent stay on our 2 week trip to NZ and Australia. Sarah and her family gave us the warmest welcome and she was always two steps ahead of us attending to every detail. Pihopa’s beautifully decorated cottages are spacious and luxurious. They are thoughtfully stocked with drinks, wine, liquors, snacks and a delicious afternoon tea treat. The living room is large with comfortable seating and beautiful local books with hikes, trails and activities. Sarah recommended Nelson highlights and made reservations at some incredible local restaurants and handled all of our transportation needs. The highlights were the amazing and delicious breakfast spread on the chapel and cocktails and canapés at the pool house every night. We mostly stay at 5 star resorts and we have yet to stay at one that gave this much attention to detail with such genuine personal care. You just do not get this level of attention at the larger resorts. Sarah is the most fabulous hostess and we are so grateful for the opportunity to stay at Pihopa!

We found our recent stay at the Pihopa retreat in Nelson to be the perfect private weekend to wind down and recharge our batteries.
We were impressed with our charming host Sarah. She made sure we were comfortable, and suggested some sightseeing and dining out options. Her delicious gourmet breakfast (all inclusive) was thoughtfully put together with a view to any dietary requests.
The Hobhouse Suite was opulent and roomy, with all the usual extras...including a small fridge to keep the bubbly cold, and a gas fire to keep us warm. We also liked the

Nelson is a gem to experience some of the Great walks in the area, and our stay at Pihopa was the ideal way to rejuvenate after cycling the Great Taste Trail.

This was a wonderful weekend from the moment we arrived until the moment we left. Our accommodation was luxurious, everything we needed to make our stay outstanding was included… beautiful linen enveloping towels… and the extras… a welcoming bottle of wine, whiskey or port for a bedtime sip.
The fact that we rebooked for our next weekend away must say it all!
Thank you Sarah, so much!
Oops I didn’t mention the continental breakfast supplied which included Pihopa’s own honey and, in my view New Zealand’s best sore dough

Our family of 4 had a fabulous stay with our host Sarah at Pihopa Retreat. The children were fortunate to have been offered a bell tent to stay in which they jumped at the opportunity.
Adults sunk into luxury in the extremely well appointed and modern accommodation. The bed and pillows to die for.
If you love a beautiful bathroom then these are top of the line!
Complimentary local produce, honey and breakfast options made waking up easy as well as the extra treats of chocolate, wine and port making this stay even more special.
We visited the Nelson weekend markets, beach, cafes and shops as well as spent time in the pool and enjoying the view and gardens of Pihopa.
The chapel is absolutely gorgeous and a real asset to the property for anyone looking for a special wedding venue.
A special few days where we would love to return and see more of the area.

Sarah and her staff made us feel at home even before we arrived. The location is an oasis in Nelson tucked in on beautiful grounds meticulously manicured. The rooms themselves are stunning - with extremely comfortable beds, pillows, towels - anything you can ask for. The breakfast spread is delicious and the afternoon pastry is a very nice touch. We visited at the height of tourist season and Sarah made dinner reservations for us with organized transportation to ensure we ate at the best restaurants. If you are considering staying here, don't overthink it, book immediately!

My mother and I stayed at Pihopa Retreat and it was heavenly. The suite was gorgeous and luxurious, the bed was so comfortable and the grounds were just stunning. My mother loved sitting on the large balcony, soaking up the beautiful views and watching birds play in the garden. We also enjoyed visiting the wonderful historic chapel on the grounds. There were so many thoughtful touches like cake, shortbread, wine, whiskey, port and a large selection of teas, Nespresso coffee and juices in the suite. Not to mention delicious canapés and drinks with the host at 6pm and arriving back at the end of the day to find a lovely warm fire waiting for us. We both felt so well looked after by our lovely host Sarah. We can't think of a more perfect and peaceful place to stay in Nelson.

Pihopa Retreat offers warm hospitality. accommodations that are spacious, charming, and well-appointed, and a lovely setting. Sarah and her assistants, Annie and Andrea, could not have been more welcoming and attentive. Prior to our arrival for a three-night stay, Sarah had made dinner reservations for us at three different restaurants, which she made clear we were free to change if we had somewhere else in mind. We decided to go with her recommendations and had excellent meals at all three choices. Tim, the morning chef, made wonderful breakfasts each morning, served in a beautiful room in the main house. Special extra touches included cakes for afternoon tea left in our cottage, complimentary happy hour each evening in the pool area (with a cozy enclosed bar if weather was rainy or too chilly), and complimentary taxi service to and from restaurants for dinner. The cottages are large, private, and well-equipped, with a large balcony overlooking beautiful grounds. All in all, it was a thoroughly enjoyable, relaxing, and memorable stay. Thank you Pihopa.

Other reviewers are spot on. Our “room” (living room, bed, bath) is beautifully, freshly decorated with all the practical necessities. In addition there are lots of small touches in the “kitchen” and bath areas. Fresh fruit each day, afternoon tea treat. Part of what makes Pihopa exceptional is the personalized treatment by the proprietor and other staff members. The setting is in a large garden. We used Pihopa as a launch for our exploration of Abel Tasman National Park.
