My daughter and I stayed in Passage Hut on Pepin Island for 2 nights in January 2022. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay - the weather was great, the hut was comfortable and had all the amenities we needed and we loved the outdoor bath. We swam at the little beach below the hut; at first, I was dubious as it seemed very close to the estuary mouth and I was concerned about safety but it was fine and the water was very warm. We walked over the hills on the island which was great exercise, and we didn't see anyone at all in our time there. I think you would enjoy your stay on Pepin if you felt comfortable driving to a reasonably remote location and were happy to do things like change gas bottles for cooking and using a composting toilet. We took the option of a ride to the hut as although it's only about a 25-minute walk on a farm track, it would be a hassle to carry all your food and drink. There is an extra charge for this service.

What a beautiful island to spend the night at. My husband and I throughly enjoyed exploring the forest and coast near the Nikau hut - and what a cute set up with hot shower, tea and delicious coffee. Feels like luxury tramping! We kayaked around the island on the second day, which was stunning. A highlight was seeing the seals playing in the surf. Cannot recommend enough - a must see for all New Zealanders!!

This was the highlight of my whole road trip, the island is amazing!! We stayed at the rocky point hut which I think is the most high end out of all of the huts. The hike is not easy but that is made very obvious to you when you book. Make sure you book direct!! The communication was amazing, the sunset and bath where a highlight too and I would highly recommend the hike down to the private beach! Thankyou so much for having us and giving us a ride back the next morning, the hike makes everything worth it and I've told all of my friends and family to come check you guys out. 12/10

We managed to stay here for 1 night at Passage Hut as there was a cancellation (usually a minimum 2-night stay) so felt very lucky as this was a place I wanted to visit for a long time and I am glad we did. We opted to pay a fee and be delivered to our hut by way of the buggy as I have a sore leg and we had too much luggage to cart by foot. The cabin was small and very dinky but it was all we expected and needed. It was lovely weather so we could fold back the doors which made it feel like a much larger space. The cabin was very clean and there were nice touches like some plums from their trees and some macadamia nuts and a nutcracker. There were some nibbles, potato chips and drinks to purchase if you wanted and a game and cards to play if you got bored. The bed was the most comfortable bed I have ever slept on and we had a lovely sleep. There were robes supplied which was a nice touch also. The kitchen had everything we needed and there was a gas cooker outside and a small one inside for the kettle etc. There was even a nice supply of different teas. The stainless steel bathtub out in the open on the edge of the deck was lovely and we filled this with solar-heated water and sat and had pre-dinner nibbles and drinks while taking in the expansive and changing view. There was a composting toilet out the back which I couldn't quite get the hang of and as you could imagine it did have a bit of an odour. Unfortunately, this would have been my one suggestion, and that would be, could the chilly bin/fridge that was in a nook out beside the toilet not be relocated away from the toilet? The toilets smell did put me off fetching anything from the fridge. Perhaps due to space and/or mechanics, this is the only place it could be located? A short walk down the hill and there was a beach to swim at - albeit a bit rocky but still so private and the water so clean. I just wore my water shoes in the water and it was fine. If you walked another 200 metres, there was a beach that was less rocky which I did swim to and then had a quiet walk along the beach. At low tide, it looks as if you could just about swim to the island that was there. There were also kayaks and life jackets provided although we did not use these facilities. We got a lift back to our car the next day by the host Hayden, who was lovely and very friendly and not minding stopping while I took a couple of photos from a higher vantage point while also giving us a little bit of a history lesson on the island while we drove. We had an awesome night here and certainly would have loved 2 nights as it so private and peaceful with an interesting and ever-changing view as the tide moves in and out. The other hut they also have- Rocky Point, looks amazing also on the website and maybe next time we will try the other hut as we certainly would love to visit again.
