Retiro Park Lodge offers friendly, personalyzed, memorable accommodation in an oasis of quiet country luxury: Surrounded by an extensive garden, in a 90-acre park-like property, nestled amongst hills and sitting along the river in beautiful Teal Valley, but minutes away from Nelson City’s bustle. The property rears Llamas and Alpacas that roam freely in the paddocks surrounding the lodge and also has its own producing vineyard, olive and almond groves. Our Bed and Breakfast is a destination on its own and the perfect base to explore the region’s most sought after attractions: it is within easy reach for day excursions from “The Abel Tasman”, “Kahurangi” and “Nelson Lakes” National Parks and “The Marlborough Sounds” and its wine growing region.

Gorgeous quiet location with beautifully kept gardens. The hosts are really lovely and welcoming, the breakfast was delicious and the furnishings and room are very tasteful. We enjoyed the walk up to through the vines and olive trees to meet the alpacas.

One night, quite late arrival and on the way too early! We really did not stay long enough at this wonderful and stunningly beautiful accommodation.
The grounds, from the time you enter the property are manicured and beautiful. The location is rural, a short, and well worth the effort, drive from Nelson. Ponies and alpaca graze the paddocks. A small, perfect vineyard is a short stroll, a bottle of their Rose' was included and much appreciated and a lovely pool area is there to enjoy.
The accommodation is spacious, spotlessly clean and included everything to make us, as quests, comfortable.
The hosts are friendly, entertaining and passionate about providing the very best for travelers. Breakfast, prepared by Victor, was delicious and hearty and Roberts conversation and information was much enjoyed.
We will be back when next in Nelson and would highly recommend Retiro Park Lodge for anyone wishing to stay in the area.

Robert and Victor are the most welcoming of hosts to their little chunk of paradise. The room over the barn is very comfortable with windows overlooking the lovely gardens and pastures. It's quiet. You'll have the miniature horses, duck, alpacas to keep you company on the farm. Nelson, wine country, and Abel Tasman are all a short drive away.

We visited Roberts and Victors beautiful Retiro lodge around Christmas and have been overwhelmed with great friendship and luxurious treatment. We choose the beautifully located barn next to the main house and enjoyed two days of extraordinary hospitality in a very Tastefully decorated cabin 20 minutes out of Nelson. Take a walk through the wine hills of Retiro and meet the alpacas or take a break underneath a tree to find some rest from your hectic trip. So peaceful. In the past 40 years Robert & Vic have managed to create a true treasure chest out of nothing and we can highly recommend to stay more than just a day or two. And please enjoy Victor’s brilliant breakfast and Roberts humorous anecdotes. What a character! When we come back to New Zealand we will definitely meet again!

We stayed with Robert and Victor on their magnificent property over the weekend. Based on previous reviews our stay was everything we had hoped for and more. Good taste rules supreme here and the entire property is skillfully designed and maintained to yield an atmosphere that is more likely to be found in France or Italy. We read, had great conversations with our host and sat in the balmy mid summer sun by the pool. A true break away from our busy world. Thanks Robert and Victor we hope to stay again.

We booked this unique bed and breakfast as a treat at the end of a 3 week trip to South Island. What a good choice as an idyllic setting just outside the city. The hosts are warm, engaging and very interesting. Fantastic customer service and great food, breakfasts are cooked to perfection. The accomodation, gardens and grounds are delightful and would not hesitate to return or to recommend others to visit, you will not be disappointed.

My wife and I stayed here for one night during our NZ road trip. Great hospitality provided by the owner and a lovely location up in the hills about 14km north of Nelson. We stayed above the barn (which I think is the only room on offer now) which is spacious and very well furnished with a v comfortable bed, and separate bathroom/shower. Lovely breakfast provided in the heated glasshouse in the morning. Owner is very interesting and loves a little chat. Extensive grounds - there is small pool but it had been closed a week or so before our stay. Would highly recommend if you want a little character with your stay.

I thoroughly recommend Retiro Park Lodge. We have had 5 nights here and it is without doubt the best B&B we have ever stayed. The breakfasts have been superb and our hosts Robert and Victor are lovely. They have treated us as family and will remain friends well into the future. The accommodation is great and the gardens superb. We will hopefully return in the future

We only stayed one night on our way through Nelson. That was a mistake as we did not take full advantage of the lodge and all that it offers.
Robert and Victor were excellent hosts.
We stayed in the barn, a roomy self-contained building close to the house. It was warm and quiet and well equipped.
We enjoyed a walk through the farm visiting miniature horses, and alpaca.
It was an easy drive into Nelson for dinner.
We were served a splendid breakfast (cooked by ‘the staff’ (Victor!)) with great variety of offerings. After breakfast and great conversation with them both (sometimes with both at the same time!) Victor showed us his own wine making system which uses their own grapes. We sampled some of his wine and were very impressed!
We would love to stay again if in the area.

We are impressed with the amenities, hospitality and tranquility provided by Robert and Victor at Retiro Park. For a break away from a busy city lifestyle this rural retreat and garden was perfect. The little cottage has stacks of ambiance and your comfort is assured. The hosts are fun and so charming ! A truly unique setting and delightful hospitality awaits you and we highly recommend.

Hi Celine. There are no Lizards in The Barn (or any other wild life, for that matter) just the best egyptian cotton and Alpaca throws awaiting. Hope that helps!
There are more places to choose from in the Nelson area.
