As I read the recent reviews on Trip Advisor I can confirm the positive reviews. The facility is very clean, beds are good, staff is friendly, free Wi-Fi, laundry/drying lines, and 2 kitchens. Kitchens are well equipped. They provide luggage storage. I did enjoy my 3 day stay but I must share a downside.

We stayed in a double room in the back building (#5 I think) which is next to the back kitchen. The only downside is that you can hear everything. As soon as the first person awakes and heads to the kitchen you will hear them. Even speaking at a normal volume it sounds like they are in your room. Also, when keeping the window open in the evening you hear every conversation in the shared yard area. Although I like the facility, I had very poor quality sleep for each night here.

It is an easy 10 - 15 minute walk to town. There is a large Countdown grocery store there.

We are in our 40s and were very comfortable here. There was a wide range of ages staying here. This is not a party place.

If I were to return, I may stay here but I would request a room in the main house. That may have improved my stay.

I hope you find this review helpful and if you do, I would appreciate a helpful vote. Thanks!

the Almond Hostel is one of the best Hostels I ever stayed. The Family and stuff was very friendly, helpful and every time cheerful. I was there for 18 days and very sad, when I had to leave this comfortable place. I appreciate the clean and comfortable rooms, enough space to bake my scones in the well equiped kitchen. Quiete environment but all places of interest in walking distance... thank you very much Fiona, Paul and kids making my stay so enjoyable...

Small family-run and friendly backpackers away from all the party animals.
Two kitchens, spotlessly clean, garden area, hammocks and cat.
Close to the Sprig and Fern pub and the fish and chip shop-what more do you need?
5 minutes walk into Nelson and supermarket
Free internet and wifi

I stay at backpackers as meet diverse people always friendly love them.stayed at several in nz. I am a kiwi. This one is like a boarding house. There were at least 4 girls staying there (2from Denmark) who were the cleaning staff. At midnight I opened my door and just looked at the group of more than 20 outside the door drinking and shouting. They moved away but could still hear them. At 3.45 one of the girls went to bed and slammed the door.in the morning there were no clean cups and the sink was full of dishes. They belonged to the girl who I was told is staff. She washed them up about 9am.she is there for 6 months she said.

It was great until the last day when the owner was rude and short with me for waiting in the living room too long after I checked out. It was barely 12pm and no one else was there but after what was a more or less pleasant stay (minus the lack of toilet paper in the washrooms and the ant problem in the room...yuk) I was sad to have been treated with such blatant disregard. It was not necessary but I suppose everyone has a bad day day? I won't be returning to this place though.

Response from Fiona_Lulham, Owner at Almond House Backpackers

In line with the majority of backpackers in New Zealand, we have a check out time of 10:00am. With prior arrangement, some guests may stay until 11:00am if they have not finished breakfast or have a later bus to catch. In this instance, I don't recall that any special arrangements to stay later were made. I'm sorry that this guest found my attitude in asking her to leave 2 hours after check out upsetting. We do our utmost to maintain a clean and comfortable hostel. In all of our bathrooms, we provide extra toilet rolls in holders at the side of the toilets and these are refilled regularly throughout the day. Occasionally we have a guest who may not see our toilet roll holders. We did have an instance this summer where we had ants in one bathroom, but they were quickly dealt with and to my knowledge this was the only occasion. I'm sorry that you did not enjoy the end of your stay with us - although am pleased to note that the beginning of your stay was great!

Great with a double room. Some things in the hostel need amendments - could need a loving hand fx fixing the loose tap in the bathroom. However, service is good and were helpful with storage while we went on the Abel Tasman.

We (my husband & myself), had two stays at Almond House in the past 10 days - & will go back again, should we be passing through Nelson!

We used Super Shuttle to get us to the airport & back (book online, best deal & super efficient). We had booked the Sea Shuttle into the Abel Tasman Coastal Park the morning after our arrival. The Sea Shuttle bus picked us up at Almond House & took us to the ferry at Kaiteriteri.

So Almond House was super convenient & all the tour operators knew where it was.

Bedrooms were clean, beds comfy & bathrooms really spic & span - as were the communal kitchens & sitting areas. Beautiful, enclosed, sunny courtyard. Room #6 was perfect for a couple & had it's own entrance, kettle & bar fridge! It was quieter than the courtyard rooms, as happy travellers can sit out late eating pizza from the on-site pizza oven & swapping travel tales!

We received a friendly welcome - from Nige on our first visit & by the new US receptionist on our second.

Great place!

I was only in Nelson two nights and unfortunately booked my first night in Aurora Hostel, which was just awful and so I immediately looked for another hostel for my second night and found Almond House.

This is a very clean and very relaxed hostel which is more like a really nice home than a hostel. It's the best place I've stayed in, since being in New Zealand and the people there were lovely. The cool French guy at reception was so nice and helpful and even offered me a towel.

It was such a chilled place to spend my last night. Comfortable and warm and the dorm rooms are not too packed.

Great little organic shop across the road too that do good coffee and bakery goods.

Everything you need! Facilities are clean and well maintained. The shower was excellent with good water pressure. We had a private double room with shared facilities for $70 per night. Room was clean and tidy and towels were provided. Situated in a quiet area that is still close enough to central township to walk - 10 min, or drive 2 min.
