Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Maitai Valley Motor Camp is about 5 minutes out of Nelson, great swimming holes, golf course down the road, peace and quiet, and best of all I can take my little dog, we only satyed one night, but we have already booked in again for another weekend, partner wants to check out the cycling tracks, and I want to sit back and relax.

We stayed 3 nights at the Campground and rate it as one of the best camping experiences we’ve had. It is only 5 minutes from Nelson beside a pretty stream with lots of shade trees. The owners are very friendly and helpful, and the Campground is tidy and clean.

Gorgeous location to put your tent up under a tree and to take in the valley's pretty scenery and feel like you're in the middle of nature. $10 a night is a fairly cheap stay for a tent site but with that comes a few other inconveniences and added extras to pay for. Hot shower is $2 for 6 minutes which wasn't too much of a hassle. $5 a day for WIFI as there is no reception for 3G or 4G. There is a charging room for charging devices but not nearly enough plug in points for the amount of people staying over the holiday period. Meant a lot of waiting around for a plug to be available to charge your phone for the day. You wouldn't want to have a lie in if you are planning on using the kitchen or showers before heading off for the day as they close from 10am to midday and then kitchen/communal area closes at 10pm and the hosts will tell you to leave the area and go back to your site. One of the hosts was lovely and very helpful and the other was rather rude on a few occasions. There are some nice walks close though and the swimming hole down the bottom of the camp is an added bonus. Overall, I had a reasonably pleasant stay but think there could be some improvements. Somewhere a hair-drier could be plugged in would also be good. No power points in the bathroom and you're not allowed to plug one in anywhere else.

Where to start. . .
Carol and George have been soo kind and friendly to us. When we first arrived Carol was a warming welcome, we had previous problems freedom camping in the city centre with loud music in the early hours and it was a breath of fresh air staying at the camp grounds. We first met George walking around the grounds and he has been nothing but a friendly face and a great laugh. The kitchen area was always clean and tidy and so were the showers, there is the internet room to charge your devices for free also. We did get a bit confused on where to park but they are both friendly enough to be ask twice. Don't get put off by the cheap price, the owners are just very kind and helpful to campers. There are a few simple rules but as along as you cooperate all is fine. What was ment to be only a few nights ended up with over 2 weeks and counting. Thank you both for your great hospitality.

Beautiful place but George the owner ran the site like a military camp..had a drink in my hand while admiring the scenery. George told me "to Sull all my drink or pour out my drink now" that I wasn't allowed to walk around. At 730am George was going around waking people up.Didn't enjoy my stay felt very intimidated and oppressed.

Absolutely loved this camping ground. Beautiful, quiet and easy. Parked our camper near the river, close to amenities and listened to the river, wildlife and birds in the morning. Super close to town, friendly helpful lovely staff, super peaceful and a lovely little drive to get there. Really cheap. Would definitely go back.

Basic facilities but all you need with kitchen, showers (extra charge) and laundry. Good value. Good base for the Codger MTB trails and the Dun Mountain trail. Friendly owners too. Nice riverside walks with birding opportunities.

Stayed at Maitai Valley motor camp out of sheer necessity, it's dingy, unpleasant and run with the same totalitarianism best known in North Korea. Expect the owners/managers to chase you asking if you have paid or not, scowl at you if you want to use the facilities and creep about your tent/cabin/motorhome in the night. You are not able to use the toilets/showers/kitchen for 2 hours daily and there are no facilities close to camp. I expect this is a human rights violation, or at the very least sadistic. They do have paid wifi, but it's 1998 dial-up slow. Speaking to a few other campers, they could not wait to leave so I expect any good reviews to be relatives. Nelson itself is beautiful, so if you visit, stay anywhere else.

We were more than pleased when we came across Maitai Valley Motorcamp! We were met at reception by a gorgeous wee girl learning the ropes of being an up and coming receptionist who showed us where to go and to pick any space between the trees. When we got to the right end of the camp it had such a great vibe! It was busy with backpackers and the freedom to park where you like (zero sites marked out) created such a great atmosphere. Set in a very peaceful place surrounded by trees and bush it it was so relaxing and for only $8 each! Man what a deal. Showers and toilets were clean, a little run down but no problem for us. Would definitely stay again.

Beautiful tree filled surroundings with lovely river and swimming hole on tap...waspy things at the swimming hole were a bit annoying but they weren't into landing and stinging thank god. Great level and roomy powered site, private and quiet. Nice welcome from lady at reception and very flexible with rules - thank you - hope you enjoyed the chocolates. We started off with a 5 night stay and loved the area so much we added another night. Recommend a drive further on up the Maitai Valley too. Fantastic showers at a good rate. We would definitely come here again.
