Sussex House is a late Victorian town house (1880) five minutes walk from Nelson city centre. The setting is one of peace and tranquility as our property overlooks the Maitai River. Nelson's botanical gardens neighbor our property, and the Suter Art Gallery is less than a 5 minute walk. We are also a mere 1 km walk to the Centre of New Zealand. As of February 2014, Sussex House is under the ownership of Heather D'Arcy.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Lovely property. Comfortable and within walking distance of town. Well maintained. Morning breakfast was good. Stayed two nights and had to leave early both mornings. The hostess provided breakfast for us eventhough it was early.

Great location next to the river and Queens gardens with easy access to centre of Nelson. Comfortable and welcoming host, decor tasteful and of a past era. Would have welcomed the option of a cooked breakfast.

Overnighted at Sussex House before trekking the Abel Tasman. Susan did a great job of looking after us before and during our stay - even getting up extra early for breakfast before our transit collected us, thank you! The B&B is very special with its heritage fit out providing a step back in time. The balcony upstairs wraps two sides providing plenty of space for an evening of wine & cheese if you don't fancy stepping out for dinner. Highly recommend.

My daughter and I had a great stay at Sussex House. The rooms and high ceilings of this 1900's residence are excellent and the view over to the river makes for a very pleasant stay. We were greeted with a warm welcome.

We had a lovely stay here before and after our hike through the Abel Tasman National Park. To be recommended! Susan is one of the most welcoming hosts ever! Freshly cut fruit for breakfast around a vintage round table, so great!

Very clean and cute Bed and Breakfast in an historic home with lots of great tips from our hostess! Walking to the city center was very easy and went right through a pretty little garden. Overall I would love to stay here again, Heather was amazing and she is so friendly and sweet!

Sussex House is a nicely restored 1880 residence with furnishings from the Victorian era. There is free parking available right next to the house and it is a short walk to restaurants and attractions in Nelson. The downstairs dining room is very nice and is a pleasant place where breakfast is served. The owner Heather D'Arcy was very nice and suggested a restaurant called The Indian Café for dinner. We took her advice and enjoyed the spicy lamb vindaloo, palak paneer, garlic naan and Australian Shiraz.

This is a lovely restored home a short walk from the center of Nelson. it is quiet and convenient, right on a lovely walking path along the river. The rooms are nicely furnished and the upstairs porch is welcoming in the afternoon for tea or wine. The owner offers excellent recommendations for dinner and activities. The staff went the extra mile to return an item I had left behind - truly wonderful!
