Sussex House is a late Victorian town house (1880) five minutes walk from Nelson city centre. The setting is one of peace and tranquility as our property overlooks the Maitai River. Nelson's botanical gardens neighbor our property, and the Suter Art Gallery is less than a 5 minute walk. We are also a mere 1 km walk to the Centre of New Zealand. As of February 2014, Sussex House is under the ownership of Heather D'Arcy.

Detailed Reviews
Overnighted at Sussex House before trekking the Abel Tasman. Susan did a great job of looking after us before and during our stay - even getting up extra early for breakfast before our transit collected us, thank you!
The B&B is very special with its heritage fit out providing a step back in time. The balcony upstairs wraps two sides providing plenty of space for an evening of wine & cheese if you don't fancy stepping out for dinner.
Highly recommend.

Lovely property. Comfortable and within walking distance of town. Well maintained. Morning breakfast was good.
Stayed two nights and had to leave early both mornings. The hostess provided breakfast for us eventhough it was early.

A beautiful property, both inside & outside. Lovely older style furniture & beautiful gardens. Delicious, filling continental breakfast.

Great location next to the river and Queens gardens with easy access to centre of Nelson. Comfortable and welcoming host, decor tasteful and of a past era. Would have welcomed the option of a cooked breakfast.

had an amazing stay at the Sussex House. It was lovely to meet Susann, who is helping Heather with the B&B. We enjoyed a great hospitality and felt very welcome. It was our pleasure to be guests. Such a wonderful experience! We would love to come back.

What a great place to stay!!! Located close to town in a very green area, just in front of the mountainrange, this lovely place offers a lot for a fair price. It looks beautiful from the outside, and when you enter you feel put back to the 19th century. It´s an old but very well maintained house, with big red carpets on the floor and rustic furniture. I´ve stayed in the Beethoven room which was amazing, a huge bed and a small, and two big doors to the verandah. All guests may use the verandah and it´s just nice to sit outside and relax. I got plenty of towels and blankets, as well as a little bit of portwine to taste. On the floor is a fridge, free tea, coffee and cookies. My private bathroom was on the other end of the floor (due to the design of the house), but all other rooms have their bathroom ensuite.
Breakfast in the morning included several sorts of cereals, croissants, toast, chease, jam, fruit, yoghurt, and orange and tomatojuice. Lovely.
The hosts, Vikki and David are very polite and correct, and they really give you a lot for the money you pay! On my last day David even gave me a lift to the busstation. I can highly recommend to stay at the Sussex House.

We stayed here for Christmas in 2008 and it's taken me this long to write a review. Apologies Vicki and David! We have been thinking about Nelson a quite a bit lately and would love to go back.
The house is beautiful and very nicely furnished and the hosts are extemely friendly. We had two rooms as we could not get the same room for the whole stay. It was not a problem and in fact was quite nice as it gave us an opportunity to try two out. Nelson really turned out to be a fantastic place and we were blessed with lovely weather.
There is (or was, I hope it's still there!) a great pub about five minutes walk from the house called the sprig and fern. It's small but they brew their own beer (and cider!). There's a great fish and chip shop next to the pub and they'll bring the food over to you while you enjoy your pint. I'm rambling a little but it's one of those special things about NZ.
Back to the hotel review...splendid place. Wish I was there now.

I stayed 2 nights at this B&B in Nov 09. I picked it out from the lonely planet and I dialed the number. Vicki who answered told me that they could not provide me with the same room for the 2 days. Even though I had some reservations about possible inconveniences, I agree to it as I did not want to continue looking for other possible places to stay. Boy, was I wrong! My changing of rooms the next day was carried out so swiftly and posed no inconvenience. Both rooms were lovely. The bathrooms, one ensuite and one just two door away was spotless and clean and warm, The beds were both comfortable and I just love the tea and cookies that were available just outside both rooms. Breakfast was heavenly (You must have the croissants) and in good company. The guest lounge with the free internet is really handy for me to get my emails and get in touch with friends and family. What's lovely is that there is always music playing. This B&B is peaceful and quiet and is just perfect for sitting on the verandah, relaxing and reading. Thank you, Vicki and David for your hospitality. I had a wonderful stay!

Nelson is a beautiful little city, and we found Sussex House the perfect place to stay. It's a lovely Victorian house furnished throughout with period furniture. A short 5 minute walk from the centre through Queen's Gardens, which are a safe lit walk at night. Slept really well in a lovely room - very peaceful. Breakfast was excellent - the description as a continental breakfast does not do it justice, as there was a very good range of fruit, cereals and breads to choose from. Heather is a lovely welcoming host. Nothing was too much trouble, and she was full of useful information.
