Our rural farmstay/homestay is located a 10 minute drive from the Historic Victorian Precinct and Blue Penguin Colony in Oamaru, so you can experience the best of both worlds! For a memorable experience why not spend a night or two immersed in the culture of a small working farm and get to know the locals. There are 2 accommodation options. We offer hosted B&B accommodation in our family home with 1 bedroom available as well as a private bathroom. Our B&B option includes continental breakfast as well as a 4pm Farm Tour and is suitable for a couple.

The Shepherds Rest is a shepherds hut situated away from the house. It's self catering, has an outdoor bathtub and is ideal as an adults only retreat. It does not include a farm tour or breakfast.

We farm beef cattle on our 300 acre working farm as well as a few sheep, working dogs, alpacas, chickens & ducks, Kune Kune pig and 2 house cats. Mid August to early October we rear calves and lambs.

We are the perfect base for sightseeing in and around historic Oamaru. We hope you visit soon!

We had a great stay at the Shepherds Rest, it’s a shame we only had one night. Fantastic rural location with amazing views and every thing you needed in the hut to make your stay comfortable, a great nights sleep was had by all! :) Our host Jennie was fab and made us feel very welcome, we hope to return for longer next time.

Gumtree is a genuine NZ farmstay experience with animal feeding (alpacas, cows, sheep, pig etc) and friendly family dogs and cats thrown in as good company. Friendly host Jennie makes you feel really welcomed and she makes a wonderful breakfast too! Nearby Oamaru penguin tour (we saw over 200 penguins!) and the historic precinct are major bonuses. Highly recommend Gumtree as part of your NZ South Island itinerary.

The hostess was warm and friendly and gave us a farm tour and had us feed the llamas which was fun. Stood in the sheep enclosure and watched her dog move the sheep. Her older daughter helped too and was wonderful. We had a very nice room in her house with bath across the hall. This is a shared bath but we were lucky to not to have another guest to share. I had not read close this had a shared bath. The downsides for me that I saw her kids in the hall. If I had realized I might have had a shared bath I would not gave booked. I got lucky. We opted for the dinner. It was OK I thought the $40 per person charge was steep since not a real restaurant. We shared the dinner table with her family. Two of the kids I felt were not happy with that. The hosyess helped us to and fro with our luggage. Others might love this experience. For me. Not really my preference. The hostess was very interesting to talk to

Great to hear that you enjoyed the farm tour, the animals and your bedroom. Yes it very clearly states in all our listings that the bathroom is shared with other guests, but not with our family. Guests are staying in our family home, so yes our children are present in the house. Perhaps I should lock them in their room? On that note they are teenagers and can be sullen at times so totally understand what you are saying about the dinner table, but then we were all teenagers once and can remember how awkward an age it was...

Jenni and her family were wonderful hosts, nothing was too much trouble and they had time to chat, really interesting to hear about life in a different country. Breakfast was lovely, the room was very comfortable and the bathroom enormous. It was my husband's birthday while we were staying and Jenni produced a delicious dinner for us, in fact her daught Kate cooked the amazing chocolate pudding. Thank you very much.

Had the best stay at Gumtree Farmhouse and host Jennie was wonderful! Apart from the wonderful brekkie prepared by Jennie...everything from the smallest details to that of introducing us to the must dos were top-notch. The farm sits at 82 Devils Bridge Road and u will see the Gumtree Farmstay wooden stand at the entrance to the farm. The place sits on a 2-hectare pc of land and the farm was simply lovely! Not too far from the main town centre yet close to nature for us to really rest and relax. I have attached pics on how to get to the farm once u arrive at Devils Bridge.

Thanks for your lovely review. We really enjoyed hosting you and your family and it’s always great to hear positive feedback from past guests. I would like to make a tiny correction though - we farm 80 hectares, about 200 acres, not 2 hectares.

This is one of the few highlight in our trip. Jennie is a great host. Grant is a friendly and funny guy. The kids are amazing too. The Gibsons have a great knowledge of farming and they are willing to share with us. The best way of experiencing New Zealand is to stay in Gumtree Farmstay. We enjoying the animals, the 2 lovely dogs, Cloud and Bonnie. We love playing and watching the house cats lying in the living room. We love the interaction with sheep, cows, piggy, chicken and alpacas. we have a great farm tour - feeding and interacting with the animals. At night, we are able to catch sea of stars in the sky. Lovely breaksfast and Dinner. We have a great chats with the family throughout the 3days 2nights stay. Lovely room. Basically we just feel like being part of them during the 2 nights stay. Highly recommended to stay at least 2 nights. Happy Birthday to Lucy and myself (guess i won't forget ever) haha... cya guys again soon...

Jennie and her family are so friendly. We love her clean, beautiful and spacious house. Breakfast is abundant and tasty. The farm tour is a must see because it lets us feel the unique fun of farm stay. We miss Jennie, sheeps and the three sweet working/pet dogs.

What a lovely place! Jennie really is the real deal and so is this bed & breakfast. We were a bit surprised to really be staying in their home with them. We had our own huge, lovely bathroom right across the hall from our room. The door was left unlocked for us each night so we could come and go freely and Jennie made us breakfast each morning, including fresh, hot biscuits or rhubarb muffins. We enjoyed talking with her over breakfast each morning. You can tell she loves to learn about the origins and culture of each guest she hosts in her home. Her garden is gorgeous and inspiring. She gives a great tour around the farm and interacting/feeding all the animals is great. I was in love with each of the 3 dogs, such hams they were! It is only about a 10 minute drive to/from town and is a beautiful drive at that. It's a great town to enjoying staying outside of as not much happens after 9pm in town anyway!

Jennie and her family are absolutely great hosts. They are not your typical commercial farm but more of a family hobby and lifestyle choice they have made. You get to see a variety of animals and I had my first experiences with the alpacas. Depending on how adventurous you are, the Gibsons are more than willing to share their farming experiences with you. Jennie gave me some hands on experiences in feeding and herding. The rooms are so clean and you have everything you need. Trust me on this... I'm very particular with my accommodations and you can look up my other reviews. My piece of advice, bring a pair of footwear which you're willing to give up and not wear your limited editions. This is a farm! I will definitely be back should I ever come back to South Island.

We wanted a farmstay experience was out of giving our little girl a closer contact with sheep and get to know a farm's daily life. We searched websites and finally chose Gumtree our detination. Now we are back from New Zealand, we still miss the magnificent country a lot, both extrem weather and nice people. All good memory. Gumtree host, Gennie family were all very friendly and with a lot patient to guests and it is super OKAY if you are from non frequent English speaking persons. The location is 10-15 minutes from main street/downtown. We found many animals and beautiful garden there. Great bedrooms and breakfast. All super. If someone is looking for a farmstay experience, We think Gumtree Farmstay won't fail your expectation and one will find a lot more surprise there. Thanks to Gennie's family of giving this amazed experience. Wish you and every family member health and happiness. Kuo family
