Nice peaceful setting but up a strep hill a little way out of town. However, staff were friendly and the place was clean and functional. Food prep area was communal Would I stay here again. Yes if I wasn't bothered about being out of town

when I first stepped inside reminded me of older hotels in China. This is a Chinese run Hotel and decor is definately chinese. Second impression construction , layout , and nearby buildings had a famililiarity, little search and found out it used to be maternity wing of old Oamaru hospital. Has been well refurbished and has a certain charm to it, clean and tidy , astounding views of ocean and Oamaru city, if not from room then from end balcony. Room we had on the smaller side but O.k for two people. Modern clean bathroom small fridge and tea, coffee making facilities. Let down for me was stellite T.V with only free N.Z chanells and Chinese channels . Really needs Sky for european visitors and a larger tv screen. Enjoyed our stay, being a bit different from the norm added that bit of charm. Staff were near non existant and just a basket for room keys on checkout? With a little bit more effort could have a lot more potential.

First impressions is not what it looks like on any travel site, apparently this was a former maternity home that's someone has tried to upgrade but has not done a very good job. Room was extremely small, quite cold, bathroom area was poorly lit and cold. Televison reception was so bad we just turned it off for the night. Most people won't put up with this. It must be an easy fix for christs sake. But the most thing that pissed us off was that the room was very musty and dampish when we arrived and was still the same in the morning. Opening the windows did not improve this at all. So, would I recommend this place or even contemplate staying here again even though the price was cheap. NO

Eden Gardens motel is 500 meters outside Oamuru city centre up a hill. The impression is that this once was a rather fancy hotel with a beautiful view over the ocean, but has now deteriorated and is a forgotten motel. The reception was unmanned when we arrived and left, so you need to call a number for someone to arrive. Room had a high nice ceiling, a lovely comfortable bed and a small desk with a kettle and coffee/tea/hot chocolate. Quiet and calm. I had a good night sleep. Interior was rather worn down, the carpet dusty, and the ceiling was fitted with a horrible cold modern lamp more suitable for a hospital. There is a cafe area where you can use a microwave oven and cutlery. It seems like it should be possible to also buy a drink in the evening and breakfast in the morning, but we saw no staff during our stay so there was no one to buy from nor ask about it. With a bit of love and investment this place could be a charming hotel worth stopping for. Now it is an ok budget stay for a night.

We stayed before and had a bigger room. This time the room was exceptionally small - not really big enough for a double. So small in fact that the TV had to go on the wall and there was only just room for one chair. The whole place looked much more tired than last time and felt dingy. Not really a motel as no cooking facilities in the room apart from the kettle. On the plus side the shower was good and it is possible to walk into town though it is very steep going back. We would not go back.

Beautifully restored, hill top accommodation with stunning views that would appeal to those seeking "old world" style lodging. Bathrooms are fully updated and bedrooms are equipped with tea/coffee making facilities and toiletries (our room had a double bed and single bed). Rooms have opening windows and excellent block-out curtains. Front desk staff where friendly and even asked if we wanted a soft, medium or hard bed? (which is a nice touch). All areas of the hotel were clean and tidy and the surrounding gardens were lush and green. There is a small car park, so it would be wise to book a spot.

This hotel is on a hill top. It is very old. The beds are hard even on check in we were warned. Very Asian type of bedding. However had a good sleep. No air con and had to open the windows. Quiet location. It was the only accommodation available at the time. It was clean.

Have stayed more than once and discovered the larger rooms are much better. I accidentally set off the entire buildings fire alarm in the smaller room as the bathroom door was ajar while having a shower. Also had to switch the power back on after attempting to boil the jug and being left in darkness. The bedroom facilities are adequate but the smaller rooms aren't worth 105$. Importantly, the staff are friendly and approachable. I would recommend this for budget accommodation.

Friendly welcome after a long drive. Room clean tidy and all you need for a stop over for 1 night or more. Thought also where it was in relation to shops and eating places a benefit as left the car and walked. We ordered breakfast which was good value and very nice. So all round good stay. Many thanks.

It was a very comfortable stay. Although the bed is a bit hard but overall we had a good sleep. They provide the heater, and electrical blanket. The room is small but that's fine to us coz this is a motel. Reasonable price. Won't expect anything like a hotel service. The best thing is they provide unlimited wifi as well which can access in the motel. This is the great convenience for us. As you know most of other places in New Zealand we have a limited internet access. Yes we r aware of this place is a former hospital, but so far so good. Not haunted at all. I reckon is a unique place as is up on the hill and can see the night view. Eden gardens motel is a name of the motel so don't need to expect there is a garden. The staff or the owner are really friendly to us too.
