Detailed Reviews
Nice peaceful setting but up a strep hill a little way out of town. However, staff were friendly and the place was clean and functional. Food prep area was communal
Would I stay here again. Yes if I wasn't bothered about being out of town

Very unique experience, at first a bit unsure after reading feed back... But after being here, felt that it is a very special experience.
Even the laundry had free washing powder,"yay... Very friendly staff. Only here for one night but I will definitely recommend to friends and large groups.

We were traveling in a large group of 10 people from 3 families, at the end of our road trip across the South Island of New Zealand. Oamaru was our last stop and we didn't know quite what t expect from this place which I had booked through Booking.com
As it turned out, we were pleasantly surprised with the place! The rooms were big and well appointed with very comfortable beds. The bathrooms seemed to have been newly renovated and was clean and well appointed.
The 2 rooms that we used, each had accommodation for 5 people and you would expect that to be a mess. Not so!! We had enough space for everyone and as a bonus the rooms had great view of the coast down below (the motel is situated on the top of a hill, affording very nice views of the town and the sea).
The young man and his wife who run the place were very nice and cooperative. We even were allowed to use the pipe to water down the cars which were really in bad shape after driving through last day's rains.
In the morning, we used the breakfast area and the common kitchen to prepare our toasts and tea/coffee. A definite plus over having to be cramped into your own room!
I would gladly recommend the place to anyone who is traveling on a medium budget. In case you want to cut down on expenses, I saw a backpackers motel by the same name across this one (maybe owned by the same owner?).

when I first stepped inside reminded me of older hotels in China. This is a Chinese run Hotel and decor is definately chinese. Second impression construction , layout , and nearby buildings had a famililiarity, little search and found out it used to be maternity wing of old Oamaru hospital. Has been well refurbished and has a certain charm to it, clean and tidy , astounding views of ocean and Oamaru city, if not from room then from end balcony. Room we had on the smaller side but O.k for two people. Modern clean bathroom small fridge and tea, coffee making facilities. Let down for me was stellite T.V with only free N.Z chanells and Chinese channels . Really needs Sky for european visitors and a larger tv screen. Enjoyed our stay, being a bit different from the norm added that bit of charm. Staff were near non existant and just a basket for room keys on checkout? With a little bit more effort could have a lot more potential.

Beautifully restored, hill top accommodation with stunning views that would appeal to those seeking "old world" style lodging. Bathrooms are fully updated and bedrooms are equipped with tea/coffee making facilities and toiletries (our room had a double bed and single bed). Rooms have opening windows and excellent block-out curtains. Front desk staff where friendly and even asked if we wanted a soft, medium or hard bed? (which is a nice touch). All areas of the hotel were clean and tidy and the surrounding gardens were lush and green. There is a small car park, so it would be wise to book a spot.

Have stayed more than once and discovered the larger rooms are much better. I accidentally set off the entire buildings fire alarm in the smaller room as the bathroom door was ajar while having a shower. Also had to switch the power back on after attempting to boil the jug and being left in darkness. The bedroom facilities are adequate but the smaller rooms aren't worth 105$. Importantly, the staff are friendly and approachable. I would recommend this for budget accommodation.

Lovely inside looks a tad dated outside as you drive up but inside is great! Nice people running it. Some peoples saying can only get Chinese TV but if you ask at the desk they will show you you how to get NZ English tv. When people say the bed was hard, well that's a understatement, i think the concrete guys might be able to take a lesson on how to make hard foundations from these beds! Other than that the rooms are really nice, nice bathroom, good views and really quiet! Would i stay again? I would happily stay there again if the bed didn't make me walk funny all the next day.

Strange motel in ex hospital building. We couldn't get anything but chinese TV stations. Cat is housed in old box at the front door to greet you. Nice communal room where you can make yourself a cuppa and sit at tables. No view from our room next to the front door. Good value and very firm beds. Quiet nights sleep.

If you want a firm bed and complete quiet, look no further. It's totally clean and modern too. You do need to get over the oddness of this place. It's out of the way and up the hill. It's an old hospital wing that's been converted. They could probably steam punk it up, run murder mystery weekends and charge double. You won't be disappointed ... just be warned it is odd.
