From the moment we were greeted on the doorstep by James G., we knew we were in for something very special. Not only is the old house wonderful in its embedded history but the guest quarters in the converted limestone "Annex" are truly amazing. Unfortunately, we only had one nights stay at Pen-y-Bryn; would have gladly stayed a week!

Thank you very much for your review! Sorry you were only able to stay with us for one night--we hear that so often from guests, but alas many don't know how much there is to do in the Oamaru area. But next time, we hope you will have more time to spend with us!

Normally I do not make a spontaneous reservation, but in this case I had to do. So I found Pen-y-Bryn and wanted to give it a try. Finally everything came better than me and my wife had expected. Beautifully situated with nice views over Oamaru and the quite sea, it is a magic building and a splendid garden with a...

Thank you so much for your review, and for your stay with us. We thoroughly enjoyed spending time with you both, and preparing meals for you--I'm glad that the little touches we added to make you and your wife smile were successful! All the best from us, and looking forward to listening to the CD you left us!

My wife and I spent a couple of nights at the Pen-y-bryn Lodge and it was not only a wonderful stay, it was special as well. We were greeted and taken to our very, very clean and pristine room that was decorated beautifully and was relaxing. The towels and linens were what one should expect from a 5-star lodge and...

Pen-y-Bryn Lodge is truly a special property. The interior including most of the furnishings, date back to the late 1800's when the house was built. Throughout the house there's beautiful pieces of artwork to admire. The suites are tastefully decorated with a fine eye for details. The compendium in each room gives a detailed history of the lodge, area, and...

Only a few days ago I wrote a review professing the Dock Bay Lodge in Te Anau as the finest place in New Zealand we have stayed! Well I spoke too soon! This place although different in every way to the DBL is just as amazing! What a remarkable place! Met by James and James the owners and wonderful hosts,...

We were staying at Pen-y-Bryn for our wedding when just 3 weeks before the big day our original reception venue fell through. We asked the two James' if they would also take on our reception and they proceeded to make sure that our weekend was perfect! From organising a marquee, fantastic food, amazing service to beautiful surroundings including the perfect...

Dear Rachel and Justin, first of all, we wish you many, many years of happiness and health together--you are a wonderful couple, and you and your family and friends were a delight to welcome to Pen-y-bryn for your big day! We're very sorry that your other venue did not work out, but their bad luck was our good fortune, since...

As we arrived in the rain we were greeted by our hosts with large umbrellas and a hand with our luggage swiftly followed by tea and home baked cookies. James and James have thought of everything a guest might need at this unique B&B. Their passion is clear from the beautifully restored house set in lush gardens and some of...

We travel through Oamaru annually but until now have never stopped overnight. This year we decided to stay at Pen-y-bryn Lodge and it couldn't have been a better experience. The Lodge is a beautifully renovated Victorian home. We stayed in the Elizabeth room which was full of original Victorian features and overlooked a lovely internal courtyard. Dinner at Pen-y-bryn was...

Greeted by affable hosts James and James at sympathetically restored spacious Victorian lodge. Wonderfully aromatic garden and close attention to detail, including great breakfast and dinner if required. A short drive to unmissable downtown seaside Oamaru with incredible Victorian classical architecture reflecting former trading glories, now housing galleries & Steam Punk museum.

What an amazing stay with the James'. Organised at the last minute, we were welcomed to their gorgeous lodge. Dinner was so delicious, most of the ingredients picked straight from the garden. Do not pass this way without staying here. - Sarah & Steve
