We had a refurbished room in this historic building. Very clean and comfortable. We really appreciated the character of the rest of the building. Great central city location with parking out back. The long walk through multiple, poorly lit, empty conference rooms to get to our room was a little odd.

We were in town to celebrate our wedding anniversary. Totally our fault for not being organised enough to book a table for dinner on a holiday weekend and to find ourselves without too many options for dinner. We managed to book a table for 7.30 at the downstairs restaurant at The Brydone. We were looking forward to enjoying a meal, a couple of drinks and some dessert. The gentleman who made our booking for us and showed us to our table was very friendly, welcoming and professional, however once we had had ordered the experience went down hill. It was 8.30 before any food arrived. I was told the roast of the day was beef. When it arrived it was actually pork which I don't like at all. For the price and the wait, the meal was pretty unexceptional in terms of serving size and flavour. The staff seemed pretty distracted and stressed, and after the long wait for the main and the lack of an offer to replenish our drinks we just finished our mains and left. I don't mind waiting for a meal to arrive, if only the staff think to mention it and give a heads up. Or at least apologise for or acknowledged it. I know it was a holiday weekend and it was a clearly a busy night, but this is a large hotel in a fairly popular tourist destination so we would have hoped for better.

Stayed for one night. Wonderful location in the Victoria precinct, rooms are comfortable, bar fridge, free standing heater, decor relatively modern, bathroom also updated but very tight. Overall very pleasant. The hotel has a under utilised bar area and the most gorgeous dining room but the dining menu is very lacking, to the fact we went elsewhere, shame management have disregarded this wonderful drawer card. The hotel seems to have a lot of function rooms which lead to a very sleazy sports bar/gaming area. Would stay again for location but in summer rooms could be very hot with no air conditioning. On site parking.

The hotel is dated , noisy and over priced for what it offers . Rooms don’t offer much space no wardrobes or hanging space for clothes , tiny ironing board and windows that have large cracks in them so they let the cold draughty air come in . Has a distinct smell of old fat fryers everywhere . Road is noisy and floors creak so you can hear every footstep. Could be so much nicer with a bit of thoughtful upgrades to make it a charming character hotel

One of the best hotels we've stayed in so far on our trip; The reception rooms date from the 1880s - elegant chandeliers, brocade curtains comfy sofas, but the accommodation is a new block at the back with up-to-date bathrooms (lovely shower) and good wifi. The restaurant is good too, and reasonably priced. We wished we could have stayed longer

Pretty shocking actually. We requested the Accessible studio as I have severe back problems and cannot get up and down stairs etc. We got to the motel to be told the car park was way around the back and because of issues they were having we would have to walk back and forwards from the car park at the end of the block to the entrance every time we went out, I thought okay not a problem as I can wait at the entrance for my hubby to bring the car around. I was then directed to our studio unit which was on the second floor with 2 flights of stairs to get to as the lift was not operating. I managed to get up the stairs in some discomfort only to have our room absolutely stink. I don't know what the cause of the smell was but it was very musty, mouldy and I am sure the room had not been opened for many a week. I am aware the motel is old but there are ways to keep an old girl functioning and smelling nice for potential stayers.

Response from Cathy Maaka, General Manager at Brydone Hotel Oamaru
Responded 21 Dec 2021
This was very unfortunate, both our lifts were out of order, we have had regular issues with our back foyer lift, but we now have a brand new lift from our front reception area. We have two lifts operating at the moment which is so great for our guests. We are very sorry that this happened for our guest at this time. I'm not sure why the guest's room smelt as our housekeepers check our rooms before our guests arrive and regularly clean the rooms. Merry Christmas.

The Brydone Hotel is a really great piece of old Victorian architecture. The historic part of the hotel has 15 rooms, and the newer extension has 34. Also in the historic part is 4 spacious suites, 2 of them with spa baths.
We stayed in one with a spa bath and got a lot of use out of it, and marveled at the size and space on the bathrooms, especially with the high ceilings. Keeping in mind that this is a historic hotel, and perfectly in keeping with the nearby Victorian Quarter, they've done a marvelous job of keeping original features and a vintage vibe, while still providing all the mod cons of TV/spa bath/heating etc. We had meals in the Totara Bar restaurant and were quite satisfied with the range of options and excellent quality of the meals. Service by hotel and restaurant staff was quick, attentive and overwhelmingly friendly. We had a browse of some of the function rooms as well and they were all extremely spacious and well laid out.

Disappointed doesn’t begin to cover how we felt about the “Junior Suite” we booked at the Brydone Hotel for a romantic getaway. The description on the website says “The Junior Suite is the crème da le crème of our historic hotel.”

2 nights for $435.00 gave us a tiny TV that was 5-6 meters away from the bed and barely watchable, a wardrobe that was approximately 50cm wide, two old ratty armchairs, and a view of an industrial rooftop. The spa was not a corner spa as pictured, but a regular bath with spa outlets. The décor was chintzy with a floral nylon bedspread that my grandmother would be ashamed of, and the bed was not comfortable. Satellite TV = 3 channels. And when they made up our room up they just pulled up the covers and left the pillows on the floor.

The décor is tired, the carpets worn, the service mediocre and the whole experience a waste of money.

The only positive is the location of the hotel in the centre of the old town, and the beautiful architectural exterior of the building.

Room was dated, very hot-even with the sash window opened right up & a fan given on request. Bathroom floor tiles very slippery. Bed was sloping down at head-end, required 3 pillows. Whole building very old with uneven flooring. One lift was not operating so had to use stairs from ground floor up to our room & Whitson room where our function was. No toilets near Whitson room, lucky we had access to our room nearby, otherwise have to go down 2 floors by stairs to get to the loos. Even if all lifts were operating, we'd still have to carry cases down some stairs to get access to carpark around the back.No concierge seems to be available.Food was good & would consider going back for food only.

We stayed in the Hotel as individuals and had a comfortable night with a King and single bed. The young Asian lady at reception was very welcoming. The heater was great and amenities completely adequate for us.
The steak meal at the restaurant was amazing with perfectly cooked quality fillet with vegetables etc. The Otago Pino wine available at this restaurant is just perfect and priced affordable.
We are repeat customers and will continue to recommend this place.

We stayed at this hotel as it was close to two attractions we wanted to take our grandson to see while on holidays. The room was adequate, but only until the people in the next room started to argue and children spent hours running up and down the hallways. The walls are paper thin. Not a good nights sleep, glad to leave.

Oamaru is soo pretty but will definitely stay in another hotel next visit.
