Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The hotel is dated , noisy and over priced for what it offers . Rooms don’t offer much space no wardrobes or hanging space for clothes , tiny ironing board and windows that have large cracks in them so they let the cold draughty air come in . Has a distinct smell of old fat fryers everywhere . Road is noisy and floors creak so you can hear every footstep. Could be so much nicer with a bit of thoughtful upgrades to make it a charming character hotel

First time staying here, had one night up in room 18. No real complaints, the hotel is old but is well maintained and looked after and the staff were all happy and friendly. I ate in the restaurant and tried the seafood chowder which was delicious. I also had a Monteiths Black which I think was the last pint in the barrel! It dribbled out of the tap and was pretty flat and lifeless… but I was thirsty so down it went. The room was small but had in it what you need - it was clean, the shower was great and the wifi fast. The only downside was a very noisy group of birds that started making noise outside my window from 6am, two hours before my alarm was due to go off. Overall a nice relaxing stay

This place was lovely. I start building really well maintained the Rangehood very comfortable X extra high ceiling, very spacious, really nicely renovated, the bathrooms, very modern, and for an extremely cold time of the year. The rooms and dining areas were quite warm and well heated

Overall the rooms were very good, staff very friendly. Breakfast however let them down. We had to wait an hour for our meals, poached eggs over cooked, bacon dry and almost beef jerky. The hash browns were inedible with no evidence of potato.

The hotel was right at the center of Oamaru, with a lot of shops and restaurants nearby. The room was a bit dated but well kept and clean. Oamaru is a lovely small city and this hotel is a good option for a short stay.

We stayed here to experience the old building. One night in the Spa suite and it was wonderful. The bathroom with spa is a lovely, heated room and the bed in the old part was very good. The old lift still works and the sweeping staircase is grand. If you enjoy history then the nostalgia that staying in the old section of the hotel brings is great. The double hung windows still work and let in a wonderful breeze. We arrived on a Sunday night, the restaurant was closed, fortunately opposite the hotel is Fat Sally’s a popular bar and restaurant serving great food. 5 stars for the experience of the old world

Room was dated, very hot-even with the sash window opened right up & a fan given on request. Bathroom floor tiles very slippery. Bed was sloping down at head-end, required 3 pillows. Whole building very old with uneven flooring. One lift was not operating so had to use stairs from ground floor up to our room & Whitson room where our function was. No toilets near Whitson room, lucky we had access to our room nearby, otherwise have to go down 2 floors by stairs to get to the loos. Even if all lifts were operating, we'd still have to carry cases down some stairs to get access to carpark around the back.No concierge seems to be available.Food was good & would consider going back for food only.

Booked 2 nights over Christmas. Lovely old building but modern inside. Spacious room with both queen and single beds, very comfortabke and quiet. All accommodation is on the second floor but easy to access with the lift. Great shower and amenities. We didn't dine there but there is a bar and a restaurant serving breakfast and dinner. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Easy access after hours too. Will definitely stay there again. Highly recommend!

We stayed at this hotel as it was close to two attractions we wanted to take our grandson to see while on holidays. The room was adequate, but only until the people in the next room started to argue and children spent hours running up and down the hallways. The walls are paper thin. Not a good nights sleep, glad to leave. Oamaru is soo pretty but will definitely stay in another hotel next visit.
