Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

Thank you so much everyone at Colonial Lodge who helped ensure our room was ready for early check in on a rainy day after our car broke down. It was so nice to have somewhere warm and dry to shelter for the day. As for the room, everything was spotless. the bed was comfy, and the room was spacious, with a kitchenette that made it easy for us to self-cater. Thank you again.

Colonial Lodge was sparkling clean, and well appointed. Bed was extremely comfortable, with quaiilty linen.
Check in was easy, our host was very friendly and accommodating, we had our dog with us so we were given a quiet unit at the back, away from traffic etc.

I have had the pleasure of staying at the Colonial Lodge Motel, in the northern end of Oamaru, twice in the last month or so. On both occasions I was very impressed by the reception staff who were both friendly and efficient. But this was just the start of what was to be great experiences. The motel facility on both occasions was sparkling clean, yet managing to appear inviting and homely. The rooms I stayed in were well supplied with everything I could need and consumables were of good quality. On my last visit i stayed 2 days and was delighted to find that tea, coffee, and cookies were replaced each morning. The bed was truly luxurious and this word stays as a lasting memory of the whole experience. Thank you to the whole team who create such a nice place to stay.

The back rooms are quiet, and a good night's sleep was had.

On first entering the room however, two things detracted. The lounge is peeling and not a great impression on first entering the unit - a throw rug or something washable to cover temporarily while waiting replacement. I presume the exhaust fan cupboard above the hotplates is no longer wanted, but looks out of place and if to remain needs sprucing up with a nice coat of paint.

Bed linen, towels were very good. Hot water plentiful and water pressure if anything in the kitchenette was too strong.

Only two of the three rear rooms were occupied. My only annoyance was I did not realise the motel was a pet friendly motel as the Web page does not make it clear on the main home page. I had only realised after when reading a review to do mine that someone was allowed their pet and given a back room. I only pray not ours and if so, the room is fumigated for fleas and cleaned of pet hair as I do occasionally travel with family members who are allergic to animal hair; and if so, a courtesy of telling people the room has had pets occupying the room - better still, if only one or two rooms are designated pet friendly and not rented to non- pet owners. I understand a living has to be made, but not everyone is comfortable sleeping where dogs or cats have been.

We stopped here for one night on our way south to the Catlins. We hadn’t booked and by the time we got to Oamaru we’re just after somewhere to lay our heads, so we didn’t expect much, just went to the first place that caught our eye. Well, it was way more than that. I would have been happy to stay for several days. We had a studio but it was spacious for two people. The place is immaculate
, obviously recently renovated, and the receptionist was friendly and helpful. If you’re looking for a great place and good value in Oamaru, I highly recommend it.

I stayed 2 nights while visiting my mum at Iona rest home. As a female travelling on my own I felt very comfortable and safe there. The room was beautifully presented and very clean. The staff were extremely friendly.

One night’s stay at the Colonial Lodge Motel - and a very enjoyable experience. Comfortable and really clean room. Not too noisy with the main road nearby, as some note. Well appointed rooms, although the toilet in the bathroom had a noisy cistern (closed the door, no prob). Would stay again if in need of the location etc

This worked perfectly for us, we had rooms at the back so quiet and with views of the sheep. Plenty of parking outside your room. Room was spacious and well equipped with a reasonable sized fridge and storage. Perfect for our couple of days in Oamaru. It is too far to walk in but only a short car ride and decent parking once there.
Would recommend.

I was very pleased with our stay. The room was perfect for a one-night stay—clean, with a great bed, simple but tidy, and better than other places that charge much more. The shower was new and worked well. Overall, it was an excellent room for the price.
