We'd tried to get a room in the Historic District, but there was a convention in this little town, a gathering of bowlers, so the i-Site lined us up our room at the Holmes Hill Motel. What a delightful surprise! The price was right, the beds were comfy, and though we were right on the main road to Dunedin, the way the motel is situated, we had little to no traffic noise. There's a lovely deck out back with views over the valley, which was very nice for an afternoon glass of wine. The room was spacious enough that we weren't all over each other, even with all our suitcases open, plus there was enough of a kitchen in the way of mini-fridge, etc., that if we bought a few items, we could manage breakfast or lunch in the room, if so inclined. After returning to Hong Kong two days hence, I realized I'd left my iPad charger and universal adapter behind somewhere by accident. When I phoned about it, yes, they had it, and had been expecting my call. They were kind enough to post it to me, and saved me the the not-inconsiderable expense of replacing both. This is a better result than I had when I made a similar error some years ago with a 5-star hotel! Such personal and attentive service (or lack thereof) can make or break a holiday, and I'm happy to report that my experience with the Holmes Hill Motel only makes me want to come back and explore Oamaru in greater depth. There's much more to see than I could manage in just two days, and now I know exactly where to stay when I can manage a return visit.

Lovely room, comfy bed, quiet even though it is on the main road you can't hear the traffic. Pour yourself a drink and sit out the back and take in the lovely semi rural view. All within walking distance to a large grocery store where you can buy your wine.
Highly recommend a stay here, we stayed a week And would definitely stay here again.

Got into Oamaru at 7pm on the 30th Dec to find accommodation was fully booked, driving out the south side we spotted Holmes Hill Motel had vacancies! I'll admit it looks a wee bit rough on the outside, but the rooms are immaculately clean and surprisingly modern. Bed was super comfy! Only $11.00 for a taxi to town. The owners are really friendly.... And best of all, the price was more than reasonable!

On a 3 week tour of South Island NZ hospitality has been superb, but I've saved the best motel to last. Holmes Hill is well appointed, beautifully presented and most comfortable. At the same time, it's the most reasonable - splendid value. Wifi in NZ motels has been the big let-down but here it has been excellent, free and fast - AND NO HORRIBLE COUPONS!
My rating? 12 out of 10!

Stayed here on an overnight trip to Oamaru - lovely room, looked to be brand new, was certainly spotlessly clean. Extremely comfortable bed. End units have a pleasant rural outlook. For a short stop it was excellent value.

Stayed in one of the two bedroom units for one night. The rooms were scrupulously clean but very utilitarian. When we arrived back at the hotel after viewing the blue penguins - no more than 10:00 p.m. - we had to maneuver our way into our room in the pitch black as there were absolutely no exterior lights on anywhere. In fact, one of my greatest criticisms was the poor lighting in the whole place, which could be easily addressed. There was a single, naked bulb hanging in the living room ceiling, and in the room I occupied there was one dim ceiling light over one of the three beds in the room.
We spent $140 for three people.

We stayed in the 2 bedroom family unit, it is dated but has everything you need, and heaps of room for the kids to spread out. The beds were really comfy and the unit was very clean. They have a free washing machine and a clothes line to hang your clothes out on (my washing was even bought in for me!), there is a big field out the back with swings and heaps of room to kick a ball
